michigan version of the terrible towel

Submitted by los barcos on
the freep has an article about michigan incorporating in the big house what i could only imagine would be a terrible towel a la the pittsburgh steelers. pertinent part: ""There's a towel that I believe we're going to try to start trying to introduce at the football games and it says 'All in for Michigan.'" she said during the interview. "We want the crowd to help the team on in the game because we always need the fans' participation. And we are hoping that the cameras above the stadium will show everybody waving those yellow towels. It's a great atmosphere for the recruits, because they really pay attention fast."" i hate this idea because 1) i believe the terrible towel is one of theee most annoying objects in all of sports. honestly, these pittsburgh fans carry it around as if its some sort of magical talisman. and 2) im living in pittsburgh now and i do not want to hear all their obnoxious fans complain that michigan stole their idea. i know this is somewhat of a rant, but does anyone have a opinion on the matter? link: http://www.freep.com/article/20090611/SPORTS06/90611051/1048/sports/U-M…

Am I the only one whose keys end up banging against my fingers when I jingle them? It kind of hurts, but not enough to force me to stop. Also, does anyone else think that jingling your keys doesn't really make that much noise?

this semester who is a Pittsburgh fan and he brought that stupid towel to class during their Super Bowl run. I wanted so badly to ask him how he liked last years Stanley Cup final, but I don't know him well enough to feel comfortable doing that. Also, my grade could have been in danger!

I support the Terrible Towel 100 percent. And, MichFan1997, he probably liked the SC Finals last year a lot better than Lions fans liked the 2008 football season. lol. Anyway, be it Terrible Towels, Home Run Hankies or standard pom poms, i'd rather see people waving and yelling with those than those stupid freaking car keys.

....but does seeing your football team win it all and establish itself as the winningest team ever in the Super Bowl kinda mitigate the pain of losing in the finals? Pens might lose tomorrow, but the Steelers will still rock and roll for Pittsburghers. Wings win, but the Lions still blow donkey. Of course, Tigers > Pirates, so maybe this isnt much of a discussion. I just wanted to stand up for for my fellow Steeler fan, thats all.

Losing in the finals honestly stings worse than anything in sports. So . . . the Tigers' 2006 season was harder on you than all those 100-loss seasons before it, because of the WS loss?

Yeah, the terrible towel originated in Pittsburgh but it seems like waving towels has become pretty ubiquitous at this point. I was at game 4 of the 2006 playoff between the Tigers and Yankees and we were all given orange towels. I think it added to the atmosphere and inspired the crowd to get into it. Plus it was a pretty cool visual in the 9th as we got closer to the final out. Let's face it, there are a lot of Michigan fans who could use a little nudge. Maybe sticking a towel in their paw will force 'em to stand up and make some noise.

this will REPLACE the keys and is even quieter than the keys. Why not all in for michigan cowbells, or airhorns, or fake breasts -- all of which would make more noise than keys or towels.

Everyone talks about maize outs vs. blue outs. I don't want this to turn into that argument, but the "terrible towels" is a great way for EVERYONE to be involved with the "maize out". I'm all for them. It just adds to the atmosphere, of which, UM is definitely lacking.

I kind of like the idea and then again I hate it. Either way, I don't see that many people waving their towels. It just doesn't seem like a ton of the fans at the stadium will be waving them. The old geezers will stuff them in their pockets for handkerchiefs... On that subject do people actually use those anymore?... I don't really know if I will wave one myself, but if it gives me another souveneir to take home, then I'm ok with it. I just don't want us to become PSU and chant "WE ARE THE U OF M" during games, even though we already chant we are penn state when we play them, which I find hilarious.

We chat "we OWN penn state" which actually ticks em off more ... I've know a kid at penn state who actually could hear it from the last basketball game and he was pissed. As far as the towel, I'm not a big fan of anything from pittsburg and it seems kinda lame but i guess its ok ... however "all in for michigan" is idiotic ... i vote for just we own penn state

Yeah, ok, towel, fine. But from the bottom of my heart, fuck "All In for Michigan." I was not consulted on this! I would rather have a slogan of "Choco Leibniz and Bang Bros. for Michigan."

White towels would be lame, but yellow ones could create a cool visual effect. (Also, we've often issued pom-poms for the OSU and sometimes other big games, so this isn't necessarily a big break with tradition.)

yet classy. I like it. To tell you the truth, it looks sweet in that video. If we had flares like that at a night game it would be amazing looking. You could also light the towels on fire and wave them around if flares seem a little dangerous to you.

It seems like a genuinely good idea. For one, the visual effects for recruits watching is 100x better than keys, and, though less important I suppose, better for fans at home to watch as well. From a psychological standpoint, maybe NOT hearing the jingling of your own keys would prompt you to use your vocals instead (because, like, who stands there waving a towel silently?), which is obviously a plus. It's a more "socially acceptable" add-on in comparison to keys, I suppose, and it's less likely to be looked at and have the world LAME go screaming through people's minds. The best example I can think of as far as use of towels on a common basis is Texas A&M. SEC schools usually use poms (Bama, Auburn). UGA might use towels, can't remember. As unrelated as it may be to sound, it's worth noting that for the size of the stadium, it sucks to play at The 12th Man (A&M).

I like this idea. Bring on the maize towels! It would make the maize outs look better IMO

I like it. With four games in Sept, I'll have something to wipe the sweat off of myself as I fry away in the sun. I'm sure the people around me will appreciate it when I wave the towel soaked with my sweat.

I like it too. I was thinking, why so angry? I think it would look so cool. We did get the pompoms from Abn Amro though, so I don't see how the towels should work any differently.

It's "pom-pon" - N instead of M. That does it -- I'm SICK AND TIRED of the grammatical errors that PERMEATE this board. I can't even begin to make sense of the point you're trying to make here. DAMN RIGHT I'M ANGRY! I'm cancelling my subscription . . . . (OK, I'm a little tightly-wound -- Game 7 tonight and all . . .)

From reading the article, it sounds like they are looking to make this a one season deal, not necessarily start a new tradition a la the Terrible Towel. Besides, they've done this before - they handed out towels for the OSU game (05 I think) and I still have mine.
