Michigan Hockey Anthem "Big Blue"

Submitted by thatguycharlie on December 9th, 2022 at 3:22 PM

From the official UM Hockey Twitter is a new anthem with call outs to most of the players on the roster. So I guess we are leaning into everyone else calling us "Big Blue" now?

Have never been a fan of that expression. In fact, a neighbor--who is a former FSU football player for Bobby Bowden--saw me in my Sauce Castillo t-shirt the other day, and said, "Go Big Blue!" and I was asking myself whether to speak up or not. Good manners got the best of me, but. . . why.

Didn't we just go through all this with a "new" song for football back in the days of Brandon?  Wasn't in "In the Big House" or something like that?  I recall it not being well received.

My dad went to Michigan in the 80s and often calls Michigan "Big Blue". He's also generally fairly knowledgeable about UM history and other schools' traditions, so I never questioned it until I started frequenting this board. I guess it's a pretty controversial phrase among certain segments of the fan base?

Yes, I hear that repeated frequently on this board, and then I see people elsewhere (like in this song, for example) use it pretty confidently. It's hard for me to believe that "it's flat out incorrect" when many people seem completely oblivious to that "fact". Isn't that the definition of controversial?

Our cheer leaders have had a "Let's go, Big Blue" cheer at basketball games for some time, so it's not just outsiders, and we heard it on campus and in the media in the 80's.

I'm 100% comfortable with the Big Blue moniker becoming a global reference to my beloved Blue U, and IBM, Kentucky and the Giants can suck wind, because Michigan bows to no team, per James Earl Jones.

Go Blue!!!

One measly upvote for ya and I will back ya up.

I think Big Blue started - I wanna say it was an ESPN anchor or similar - sometime in the last couple decades.  That horse has left the barn and aint comin back.  So deal with it.  I hear it often when I'm wearing my M gear (I am not in Michigan) and I take no offense or make any attempt to correct anyone.  A simple nod of approval, smile, or fistbump is all that's warranted.

Sorry haters but M is a bigger national brand than Kentucky hoops, Giants foosball, and yeah even IBM.

I got through about 30 seconds of that...  Isn't an 'anthem' something you should be able to use for years?  I mean, this is centric to the team this season.  That's it.  It cannot be used in other seasons because it names they players.  That's not an 'anthem'!  It's a hype song.

A misdirected hype song, because 'Big Blue' is Kentucky.

This effort is wrong on so many levels...

That was fun. Thanks for posting.

EDIT: I just read the other comments. That was NOT fun. NO thanks for posting.

(Shh, don't tell anyone but I kinda liked it.)

At this point we might as well shrug our old-man-yells-at-cloud shoulders and accept the "Big Blue" moniker. As time goes by it's getting used more and more in the media, so I think we're fighting a losing battle.
