Michigan Embarrassing Ticket Giveaway
September 22nd, 2014 at 5:25 PM ^
Just had a friend on campus do it because why not?
September 22nd, 2014 at 5:38 PM ^
Because game attendance is inversely related to Brandon's chances of getting canned.
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:14 PM ^
but most college kids are poor, my buddy paid $3 for 2 cokes and was handed 2 tickets. I would take that deal any day
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:41 PM ^
(ok, so it would've been much better with Coke cans...)
September 22nd, 2014 at 7:52 PM ^
Brandon's job security isn't going to come down to whether our announced attendance is 102K or 104K. What is far more important is how the season-ticketholders and big-money donors (the people responsible for our athletic department's surplus) feel about him.
If you want to go to the game, take advantage of this deal.
September 23rd, 2014 at 3:48 AM ^
Brandon's job security is apparenlty going to come down to two issues: meddling in the football program and devaluing the product and tradition of the football program by gouging the most loyal fans in college football.
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:58 PM ^
Wow a picture of a Coke and tickets. That proves it for sure.
September 22nd, 2014 at 7:02 PM ^
well I guess we will have to see if they scan on Saturday.
September 22nd, 2014 at 7:07 PM ^
Where exactly was this purchase supposedy made?
September 22nd, 2014 at 7:14 PM ^
Apparently the Union (basement store). I look forward to your investigative report and an apology.
September 22nd, 2014 at 7:35 PM ^
I'm currently a student in the College of Engineering and since it's career fair I went to the UGo's on north campus to get myself a throwback Mountain Dew. Saw the sign there and thought there was a catch so I asked the cashier and it's totally real. I saw the tickets. Still didn't buy the 2 Cokes.
September 22nd, 2014 at 9:04 PM ^
I do apologize if you're offended, though I never really thought you were deliberately lying and I don't think I accused you of that. I thought you had been duped.
It does appear to be true. It's just with the piles of crap being thrown on this program, coach, team, AD, and seemingly any and all things even smelling like Michigan football, I was suspicious.
It should be made clear this a sponsor who has been granted tickets and is doing as they please with them. The OP gives the impression, at least to me, that the university is participating in a giveaway simply to fill the stadium. That's not exactly the case.

I can confirm based on color/looks that this is indeed the counter of the Union Ugo's. Also, if you look really closely you can see the MDining logo on the bottom left of the plastic standup thing to the right of the free ticket sign.

the shadows are in the wrong direction.
September 22nd, 2014 at 8:16 PM ^
Read about it and walked to the Union to buy a couple Cokes on a beautiful night in Ann Arbor. Apparently Pepsi did a promotion last week and Coke was trying to one up them according to the clerk and I got the last pair. Tickets are in section 15 near the top of the stadium but for buying two cokes what the heck.
September 22nd, 2014 at 8:31 PM ^
So it sounds like this was a promotion put on by Coke—not the athletic dept.—involving a very limited number of tickets, as was suggested by this tweet:
@cdbarker @Mark__Snyder @MZoneBlog In most sponsorship deals the sponsor gets a number of tickets. How they use them is usually up to them

DB spin machine already at work. Remember when the skywriting was "directed to be done all over Southeast Michigan, not specifically East Lansing, or anything like that."
September 22nd, 2014 at 8:48 PM ^
It reminds me a little of this story about Eastern Michigan from a couple of years ago:
NCAA rules stipulate a school must average 15,000 fans per home football game to remain in Division I. Eastern Michigan, which averaged 6,401 fans per home game in 2010, uses $150,000 from a distribution contract with Pepsi to purchase tickets from itself at a rate of $3 apiece to remain NCAA compliant.
Michigan isn't quite in the same boat, but I wonder if Brandon offered Coke a bunch of tickets at an insanely low price, and Coke is now giving them away in this promotion. That way, they can still claim they sold over 100,000 tickets, and that they're not directly responsible for this giveaway.
September 22nd, 2014 at 10:26 PM ^
That is exactly what happened.
Everything is just spin. Even the whole 100,000 thing.
September 22nd, 2014 at 8:51 PM ^
it would seem wise to put at least some sort of restrictions on how your sponsors can use them.
E.g., Coke cannot sell them at (effectively) $1.50 apiece two days after a bad loss and at a time when season ticket holders are already kind of upset about not getting "value for their purchase."
This isn't Brandon's fault, but Good God, even more negative PR?!? I guess when it rains it pours.
September 23rd, 2014 at 3:11 PM ^
There's kind of a girly hand growing out of that guy's chest.
September 22nd, 2014 at 5:12 PM ^
Can't see the picture.
And do you enjoy wallowing in it so? Are you planning to blame Brandon? Things are bad, seek ye less drama.
September 22nd, 2014 at 5:24 PM ^
You're goddamn right I am going to blame Brandon...(that is the name on my coke bottle)
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:00 PM ^
The tickets are available because the team is losing. Is that Brandon's fault? Yes, he's ultimately responsible for hiring Hoke. Have you been complaining about this for four years? No? OK, then enjoy your anger and fury to the skies at Michigan's losing.
The giveaway sucks, but they want people in the stadium. Or would you maximize your drama by seeing the largest possible allotment of empty seats on Saturday? See, at this point you win either way. Cheer up.
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:07 PM ^
I'm not one of the crazies that demand anything in reality (fire coach! fire AD! schedule better!). The sad thing is I think you are one of the blue bloods that defends Michigan no matter what.
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:17 PM ^
That thing that you are sad about is called loyalty.
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:22 PM ^
The Nazis were blindly loyal as well.
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:25 PM ^
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:29 PM ^
Now you are comparing loyal Michigan fans to Nazis? Better quit before you dig yourself any deeper in the hole.
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:29 PM ^
We just have different ideas of loyalty. You seem to want all fans to act like everything will be okay just have patience and support the team and the AD no matter what.
My view is demand better. It is my opinion that Michigan will be better in the long run with a change. My loyalty is to Michigan, not the guy coaching Michigan or running Michigan's athletic department.
September 22nd, 2014 at 7:02 PM ^
John Beilein's record midway into his fourth season was 11-9 including seven losses in eight games to Purdue, Wisconsin, Kansas, Ohio State, Indiana, Northwestern, and Minnesota.
This is after three years where his teams went 46-53.
2007-08 10-22
2008-09 21-14
2009-10 15-17
Fire him too?
September 22nd, 2014 at 7:08 PM ^
Comparing the basketball program (facilities, sanctions) is completely different than football. I'm sorry.
September 22nd, 2014 at 7:32 PM ^
Kinda like comparing loyal Michigan football fans to Nazis?
September 22nd, 2014 at 8:05 PM ^
where the team went on fire in the Big Ten season, finished tied for 3rd (?) I believe, and swept MSU (including the Zack Novak aneurism of leadership game). Funny thing is, as absurd as it sounds in retrospect, Beilein was on the hotseat at the time. Who knows what might have happened had they lost to MSU that year? We'll never know for sure, but the fact is that Beilein somehow found a way to rally the team that year and finish the season blazing hot. And of course made the tourney. Soo yeah, if anything similar in were to happen in football this year, Hoke would remove himself from the hotseat. Only time will tell...
September 22nd, 2014 at 7:12 PM ^
You can be loyal without agreeing with everything michigan does. Complaining is just a way to raise awarness to a problem. Michigan should never go 2-2 and look as shitty as they have especially with this being the 4th year of Hokes reign. People have the right to complain.
September 22nd, 2014 at 10:35 PM ^
strikes again!
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:18 PM ^
September 22nd, 2014 at 6:26 PM ^
I can understand that. What bugs me the most is the maize and blue goggles. Someone at my tailgait stated Blake Countess was better than Darqueze Denard. Little things like that make me wish Michigan fans were more in touch with reality.
Not saying you are out of touch, but sometimes just acknowledging the truth is hard for a lot of this fan base (MSU is a better program currently, we are a joke to the rest of the country)

Also, I'm going to be that guy: It's "Giveaway" or the seldom-used "Give Away", but not "Give-A-Way".
September 22nd, 2014 at 5:16 PM ^
Wow. A ticket giveaway that is literally just a small icon of a torn piece of paper? I am dissapoint, Brandon.
September 22nd, 2014 at 5:17 PM ^
I received a text and saved the image to my phone. Don't know how to post it.
September 22nd, 2014 at 5:20 PM ^
maybe a quick description?
