Michigan Basketball Snowflakes Thread
Well that was stressful, gotta a lot of things to clean up but that was a ref clown show for sure.
I'll take the win, Go Blue!
January 26th, 2022 at 9:06 PM ^
Did Johns get put in the dog house for losing his shoe and trying to put it back on instead of hustling down court? They could have really used him with Diabate and Hunter in foul trouble.

Not to mention his never-ending one man performance: Different Ways to Miss a Bunny
January 26th, 2022 at 9:33 PM ^
Amen! I seriously can't remember a more inconsistent upperclassman.
January 26th, 2022 at 10:38 PM ^
unfortunately, he's been pretty damn consistent...but not in a good way.
January 26th, 2022 at 10:52 PM ^
It's Painful to agree with you but dang, sadly it's been his MO.
January 27th, 2022 at 7:34 AM ^
My 7 year old daughter shoots lay ups better than he does.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:06 PM ^
I only caught the last 6 minutes live and it was stressful but they found a way to win. The refereeing seemed awful throughout but that's never going to change. I'm sort of done with the Johns experience at this point, so not a huge deal he wasn't out there at the end.
On to MSU.
January 26th, 2022 at 10:39 PM ^
except he can get rebounds and make FTs
January 26th, 2022 at 9:07 PM ^
Good thing that they only play 40 min in college. 8 more and they'd have been going into the stands to see who had the hot hand in IM's recently. As Gil Thorp would say -- Sheesh!
January 26th, 2022 at 11:40 PM ^
While it may have just been his doppelgänger, one of the refs bore a strong resemblance to Marty Moon.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:10 PM ^
What a weird, painful, stressful game. This may be reading a little too much into it but the mental toughness to hold on to this game while rotating through the bench says a lot about the attitude of this team. Maybe the corner has actually been turned.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:10 PM ^
A close game against N’W is a touching nod to the Beilein Era
January 26th, 2022 at 9:12 PM ^
I have no damn idea how we won that game.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:12 PM ^
Inconsistent.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:18 PM ^
3 straight wins is the kind of consistency I am looking for
January 26th, 2022 at 9:33 PM ^
It's the in game inconsistency that is killing them. They just go off the rails for 10 possessions and kill themselves. I would like to see Howard use more timeouts when these meltdowns start. They seem pretty obvious when it turns south.
January 27th, 2022 at 12:18 AM ^
Cumong man! Our bigs were saddled with cheap ass fouls all night. And anyway there's no "collapse" if we came back and won.
January 27th, 2022 at 6:43 AM ^
You can rebuild after a collapse... I don't know what else to call 4 straight turnovers after you have a 10 point lead. Look at the play by play. Jones hits a jumper to make it 50-40. Next 5 possessions are Jones TO, Jones TO, Diabate TO, Collins TO, Dickinson 1/2 FT, Collins TO and now it's 51-48.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:49 AM ^
Yes. They have stretches that look like they could win the Big Ten and they have stretches that look like they couldn't beat the Washington Generals.
Improved PG play would be the key factor in more consistently good play.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:35 PM ^
Go on…
January 26th, 2022 at 9:13 PM ^
When Faulds gets crunch time minutes, and Johns rides the pines, I think you can assume BJJ is clearly in the doghouse and might not see the floor going forward.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:14 PM ^
I don't mind going into the rivalry game off an ugly win. Team will be hungry. Beat Staee!
January 26th, 2022 at 9:15 PM ^
How sad that Brandon Johns has fallen below Faulds on the depth chart. Still don’t understand why Johns isn’t in there on Nance’s FTs. You know NW is gonna foul on a miss and Johns makes FTs. I don’t remember ever seeing Faulds make one.

Win's a win. Total ref show.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:15 PM ^
Yeah, glad we won and all, but we looked very ragged...not sure we can beat Staee playing like that...
January 26th, 2022 at 9:18 PM ^
Northwestern beat Staee so…
January 27th, 2022 at 12:19 AM ^
And without Nance!
January 26th, 2022 at 9:17 PM ^
Every season you need to pick up an ugly win here and there. But man oh man, they rarely get much uglier than this one.
January 26th, 2022 at 10:15 PM ^
I ripped my palm off my hand this afternoon in a freak, non-masturbatory accident, and I found watching my palm get stitched back on to be more enjoyable and less painful than watching this game.
That said, I love UM basketball and even this team. It's good to see the them overcome obstacles. Go Blue!
January 26th, 2022 at 10:52 PM ^
Not sure whether to grimace in sympathy for the pain you endured or to grin in amusement at your description, MGH.
But damn, next time use protection or lube or both.
Ouch!
January 27th, 2022 at 4:43 PM ^
Dang dude, I hope you are doing better today. That sounds extremely painful. Might have to drink a few generous pours to kill the pain. ?
Good luck on your recovery ?
January 26th, 2022 at 9:17 PM ^
The bad:
- Of course, officiating. Refs made this a very ugly game where neither team could really do much of anything. Absolutely no reason for refs to impact a game this way.
- Michigan reverted to their bad tendencies of too many turnovers and missed FT's. Nearly cost us the game.
- Offense looked completely lost when Dickinson had to sit - despite the fact Hunter didn't do much offensively tonight. He takes so much pressure off everyone else by eating double teams and always finding the open man.
The good:
- We won! Saved the season. Losing today would have made their path so much more difficult. Really, a huge difference at a key point in the season.
- Clutch play. We needed a hero when the chips were down, and Brooks really came through. Made a key bucket/steal/bucket to lead the comeback, then calmly stroked a huge three. Jones kept things in control, and made some BIG FT's. Senior leadership, man. Williams' three was confident and important, too.
- Poise. Earlier in the year Michigan had bad stretches then just collapsed. Tonight they dug deep and turned it around.
- Shooting. Not fantastic, but Michigan is so much better when we can hit some threes. Houstan looks like a different player, and Jones is really making good decisions.
- Resilience. Won a game despite losing both bigs. Tough, gritty win.
Go Blue! Keep notching those W's!
January 26th, 2022 at 9:20 PM ^
We shot 8-12 for three and 56% from 2 so I’d say shooting was only an issue from the line
January 26th, 2022 at 9:25 PM ^
Yeah, but we missed a LOT of freebies. In a game with so many fouls, it really stands out.
OTOH, Michigan's improved shooting from the field is pretty amazing. A little confidence and some nice passing really made a difference.
January 26th, 2022 at 10:41 PM ^
Michigan quite literally won the game from the line.
Both teams made 15 two point baskets and 8 three point baskets. Michigan was 18-26, 69%, from the free throw line. Northwestern was 16-26, 62%. Those two points are the winning margin.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:20 PM ^
I'll try to remember the way they wrested the game back from NWestern down the stretch, and not how they fumbled around in the last few seconds. :) Would have been deflating to drop this one; instead, we go to MSU--a team that's not nearly as good as their ranking--with a chance for a signature win.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:21 PM ^
Brandon Johns ? ?
January 26th, 2022 at 9:44 PM ^
I wonder why? He started to play better against IU.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:48 PM ^
***He played 1 good game all year vs IU
January 26th, 2022 at 11:01 PM ^
Wouldn't quite go that far but he's struggling as he seems to be needed much more this year.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:49 PM ^
He took his time tying his shoe rather than getting back and trying to play D.
Which resulted in a 5 on 4, NW open 3.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:29 PM ^
The refs thought that every foul called led to $1,000 being donated for breast cancer awareness. Nice haul tonight for the cause!
January 26th, 2022 at 9:31 PM ^
I feel like I just had birds shit into my eye holes. That was an absolutely painful last 30 minutes of that game. The refs sucked so badly. Were there more than three straight possessions without a whistle the entire second half?
The turnovers were out of control in the second half as well. Good shooting from Houstan again. I know I was down on Jones and Houstan through 10ish or so games, but the last few have been much improved for both, obviously.
I still think Jones is more a natural SG than a PG, but gotta make lemonade outta lemons. I just wish Collins would take that next step that seems just out of reach. He has that play or two every game that makes you "wow" but also that play or two every game that has you scratching your head.
Johns must really be in the dog house. Putting in Faulds with the game on the line can't mean good things for Johns.
It must be really hard for both teams to keep up the intensity when the whistle is being blown every 30 seconds. Good fight in both teams. Go blue!!!
January 26th, 2022 at 9:34 PM ^
Hope you were listening to Robbie Hummel noting that Jones is almost level with Smith through the same number of games last season. People kinda see what they want to see, remember what they want to remember. Everyone was still on tenterhooks about Smith, too, but there were a bunch of NBA players around him.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:38 PM ^
I upvote all deployments of tenterhooks.
January 26th, 2022 at 10:02 PM ^
I didn't hear that. My wife decided that vacuuming the house had to happen throughout the second half of the game. I swear she does that just to grind my giblets.
Yeah, I was never big on comparing Jones to Smith, but I really don't see too much difference in their effectiveness at this point. Different styles, obviously. Jones started the season soooo poorly, but I am really impressed that he has improved this much so quickly. I can admit I didn't hold out hope for him.
January 26th, 2022 at 9:38 PM ^
I think Williams needs to be more consistent, but it was hard to garner much from this game otherwise
January 26th, 2022 at 9:47 PM ^
Williams hit a HUUUUGE contested 3 with 2 mins left to give us the lead. I’ll give him a pass on the entire game for that.
