META: Seth, would you ever UFR Bama vs. UGA?

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on December 13th, 2023 at 6:55 PM

Had this site every done a UFR for another team/another game?

The "how to stop Milroe" thread got me thinking...so I decided to turn the SEC Championship Game on and watch for myself.

But if there was a UFR, that would be really helpful in understanding what the Wolverines are up against in the Rose Bowl.

Thoughts? Thoughts.

I just figured, he'd normally be doing our game. And we aren't playing...so maybe that time could be spent with an abbreviated version of UGA/Bama and/or Texas/Bama.

As a sidenote, I'm rewatching and UGA just walked down the field on Bama on their opening drive with plays that Michigan runs (except the one PA half bootleg they ran on some Iowa shit).

They're TD play we've run a million times. It was Corum's long run versus Washington or the Edwards runs versus OSU last year.

RB sprints to the hole, takes an exaggerated jump that freezes everyone and sets up the final blocks, then bursts through the hole and full speed.

I rarely login, or post, but I was thinking about this too...as much as I believe in the scouting this blog does of our own team via UFRs, I have always WONDERED if our coaches/other coaches (were talking low level staffers here) ever used this sites UFRs as a go by. The more I thought about it, I figured our coaches doing it wouldn't be very helpful, because they KNOW the plays and what the WANT the players doing, so the grades probably wouldn't match quite as well - think differences of opinion on Trente vs Barnhart possibly. However, for other coaches, this is basically an advanced, discussed, play by play and summarized explanation of PFF, so I would think it might actually be a data point. See what certain players are good at, struggle with, etc.

Anyways, very long way of saying, I would love to see the Bama vs Georgia UFR, because I think it could really help inform us (and maybe even our coaches) of one or two key pieces of information about specific Alabama players.

Uh, no, I don’t think so.

Staff has full 22. Staff does this and only this for a living. Staff includes seasoned, highly pedigreed football minds from across the CFB landscape.

I love what UFR has done for my football understanding. But UFR is definitely not a data point for the football coaching staff under Harbaugh.

Why do people assume this? This strikes me as incredibly naive.  Do folks here make equally childlike assumptions about the impeccable decision-making of corporations and governments?

Granted, the football program has resources MGoBlog doesn’t.  On the other hand, UFR isn't some garbage fan take, no other program has such a blog, it's free, and one of the stupidest things any organization can do is look a gift horse in the mouth.  In reality, people like free.  I've worked for huge multinational corporations that used freeware wherever possible.  If you think the world is like "they're big & successful so they must be packed with elite experts using only expensive & highly exclusive resources" and you saw how many decisions were really based on frickin' Wikipedia, you'd never sleep again.

Also:  This staff hired Connor Stalions.  They're not all geniuses over there, nor do they need to be.

Now, sure, I’d be concerned if they replaced their scouting with UFR, but who thinks they’re doing that?  But I’d be terrified if the program was so absurdly bone-headed as to reject a free resource.  That’d be like, OK what other self-destructive idiocy is going on in there.

What they won’t do is ever publicly admit going to MGoBlog, because that’s just OpSec 101.

I honestly thought about it, but I don't have all the cool "lingo."

It's also tough for me to see the entire play, that's why I love the UFR so much because it points out things I never saw the first or second time.

Usually when I'm watching a game, I'm trying to read the opponent and how we're attacking on either offense or defense. It's tough to watch 1 person when 22 are on the field. I commend Seth and Brian for all the time they put in to piece through everything and share in a way that we can process.

Ahhhh!

UFR is a LOT of work. When I was doing both it would take me from Sunday night through midday Thursday doing virtually nothing else. This is the closest I get to a vacation. I got my water tank replaced today, had surgery yesterday to remove the thing that's been growing on my forehead, finally got the P&L done for HTTV so I can get paid for that, etc.

But I've got the game downloaded for a Neck Sharpies and a Seth & Matt Show this month.

Seth, I hope you understand. Your breakdowns are truly legendary. While we cannot reasonably ask any more of you, your product is of impeccable quality, so naturally we all want more. I always liked UFR but you have taken it to another level. Respect. Take your vacation, brother.

I'd be very interested in that, obviously time permitting.

The only time I can remember UFRs being done for other teams were either Shea or O'Korn's games for old teams? I think?

Tennessee and Texas A&M both have strong aggressive defensive lines.

They were both successful containing Milroe.

Curious how similar they are to our approach.
