META: MGoBoard Elements of Style?
I was wondering if the hivemind or Brian has ever come up with editorial guidelines on how we refer to certain things.
I see lots of users typing "B1G" to mimic the new logo, and I thought we all agreed a few months ago that that was a stupid logo that everyone hated. Worse yet, it just makes things harder to read, because that's not how it's read out loud. It's read "Big Ten" and that's what I intend to call it until the federal government enforces some painful Gitmo-type punishment on me for my beliefs. I think Brian made a similar point last week about calling "Yahoo!" "Yahoo", because you don't let marketers tell you how to write your copy. Or maybe I read that line somewhere else.
Anyway, similar topics would include acceptable and not acceptable abbreviations for Rich Rodriguez, nicknames for MSU/OSU, the use of DRob, and dozens of other things I can't think of off the top of my head. Or maybe I'm taking one tiny problem I have and blowing it out of proportion.
Thoughts?
He sort of did this a few years back. It probably needs some updates, but here's a good starting point for you.
Thanks.
I thought I had read a post like that in the past. Heh, I was going to comment that it should be stickied somewhere, until I read the very first comment:
aaamichigan: This should really be stickied somewhere.
But yeah, I also think it should be updated.
The way it goes is that Brian writes something funny/original on the front page and then those somethings are repeated, copied, and often used out of context ad nauseum on the board. It's tough to predict what will catch on from mgoboard users, though. If someone introduces something that sounds stupid, they will get told of its stupidity immediately and it dies there, thus the system is self-perpetuating, not perfect though.
edit: fixed embarassing typo
Rock on. That philosophy of self governing is HARD EDGE!
I like B1G. It's a little sardonic and I think that's what people go for when they use it other than just shorthand (I use it as shorthand and don't have a problem with it).
Yahoo! is actually the name of the company. I'll use the exclamation point if that's what they want to call themselves (I also find it stupid, but whatever).
RR is fine. I don't know of any other abbreviations and his name is on the longer side.
MSU: Sparty is fine. It's a little on the demeaning side the way it gets used but they also named their friggin' mascot Sparty. It's MSU approved.
OSU: Don't care, but O$U and Suckeyes just sound stupid, IMO.
DRob is whatever; I'll usually find myself calling him Denard or DR in certain contexts.
I agree that B1G is meant to be tongue in cheek most of the time, but I'm with the OP; it annoys the hell out of me.
I guess we all have little things. I don't mind B1G but I really hate all of the "O$U/M$U/Suckeyes" stuff. I'm glad we don't see a lot of that.
Edited to add that anyone who joins with a certain poster who I won't call an idiot right now and tries calling Hoke "Cowhoke" needs an instacave. That isn't even clever. I vote the same thing if we ever come across "Dick Rod" or one of its variants on the board. Those are my two huge pet peeves.
I agree on both counts. Using the name of someone who has coached here in the past or does coach here now in a disparaging way isn't cool.
I think that referring to OSU as O$U or the Suckeyes is equivalent to them calling us scUM or Meatchicken (incidentally the most retarded excuse for an insult ever). It just comes off as stupid and ends up negating whatever point you're making.
You can write the most intelligent argument ever but the moment you put in something like this or "DickRod" or "cHoke" your argument is all for not and you look like a moronic jackass.
Incidentally what are everbody's thoughts on using "tsio"? I like it, but that's just me.
I hate "tsio" because it's a Sparty-esque ripoff of TSUN. If anything TUOOS is better since it rips on that shithead quarterback they have, but I've never felt like I need anything other than "OSU" - especially since you rarely see an actual OSU fan say that without the little "t" that they adore so much.
I agree, Dark Blue needs to cool it.
Shameless plug: You can instacave someone all on your own if you install the Ultra-MGoBoard chrome extension in my signature. Just click the hide button by their online status.
I just instacaved the person in question. To preemptively answer any question...it was awesome.
B1G is good because it's annoying to type out Big Ten over and over in a three-paragraph response. Using $$ in schools' names is juvenile and stupid. Sparty and Spartoons are pretty damn funny, though. I just call our QB Denard.
Denard is one of those people that warrants being called only by one name. He is just that awesome, like McLovin...or God.
Always cite your lolcats.
This sounds like a good project for the off-season.
Oh, shit, the off-season starts tonight around 10:00.
for reminding us.
Denard should be callt Nard Dawg
that is all.
I demand that any reference to Kesha be stylized as Ke$ha. No exceptions. Failure to do so will result in a punishment of death or a visit with the math thread (offender's choice). As was shown in said thread, misuse of a rule can have disasterous results. Incorrect usage of the Ke$ha rule (e.g. Univer$ity of Minne$ota-Duluth) will result in negs or a trip to Brian's S&M room (Brian's choice).
Key-dollar sign-Ha.
B1G refers to me, btw.
Just sayin.
There needs to be "MLA Format" in addition to filtered and full HTML settings. That would help clean posts up a little....
I always thought using "B1G" was intended to mock the logo ... since the "G" in the logo does not look like a zero, despite their best effort.
Just my e-peen-ion
logo sux
that is all
I like TSIO, tSIO, and tsio. As for B1G, they use it on other B1G boards, too; I'm neutral. As for use of the $, didn't that get someone a million point neg once after he refused to stop using it?
I think most of the abbreviations are funny and part of rivalries, but I don't complain when one is outlawed. After all, it IS Brian's board and I would be willing to bet he puts in well north of 80 hours a week on it. Consequently, and rightfully so, it's his call.
I"m just happy that we have a blog like this one.
