May 2019: Mike Valenti on the Hiring of Juwan Howard. Best Video of All Time

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on January 12th, 2021 at 11:29 PM

I'm of the opinion that the board needs to ignore the biggest DB ever to grace the airwaves.

Unless it's this.

Mike Valenti on the hiring of Juwan Howard, recorded on May 22, 2019.

This is glorious.

Hilarious. Among my favorite takes-

"Howard will suck once he doesn't have Dickinson and Wagner next year" --Two guys he alone recruited to UM? Quickly informed by fellow MSU fans about our incoming recruiting class.

"Howard plays Russian roulette with his recruiting classes, they're all gonna leave him" to which MSU fans have to remind him their top player is a massive ? as to whether he ever sets foot on campus.

MSU fans realizing we have more NCAAT wins in the past decade.

And ad nauseum- "they aren't even good," "Zaga and Baylor would blow them out," "we're gonna crush them," and whining about how the refs have decided to make MSU bad and UM good. Mm, delicious to be on this side of the salt.

We all crap on various coaches of professional sports teams, but the fact is that you don't get to coach those teams unless you've done some pretty good work in your sport.  Dickie V was a pretty good coach back in his day.  And before all the catchphrases took over, he was a damn good analyst that was fun and enjoyable to listen to.

I really wish Tom Crean would have stayed in the booth...

OMG Pete, I just listened to that and it was the first time I had ever listened to Valenti.

Let me just say that he is a DA and DB, a dumb ass and douche bag. What a miserable, insufferable idiot, he kept going on and on, I can't believe I listened to the whole diatribe.

I now know why everyone on here says the things about him that they say, man fuck that guy.

Also, any guy who wears his hat backwards can't be taken seriously, I mean look at Fatty Matty Patty.

Don’t take it personally. His whole Schlick is that he’s a one sided Drew Sharp aimed right at Michigan most of the time.

It’s negative sport reporting that gets him clicks/listeners. I have a cousin who is a Spartan zealot who thinks he’s Walter Cronkite, while my Spartan alum brother can’t stand him and hates that he’s associated with MSU because he recognized what he’s really doing.

I think we've learned that getting people riled up is not always a good trait to have.

Also, they're the only sports radio game in town. Their old station manager passed away last week and he's the true genius behind Valenti's success. They decided to go with a caller-driven format so those guys basically pick a few topics and they talk about it for four hours with the callers. Valenti is over the top and is benefited by M-football's demise and the Detroit 4 sports teams sucking. Everyone wants to vent and the biggest blowhard in radio is with them.

Someone should email this to him.. But he'll never respond.. But man. That shit would be worth it's weight in gold to see. The Unknown.. Coach Howard is growing.. while mini mouse Izzo is regressing. Tis a shame...

The silver lining of 2020, besides working from home instead of a 40 mile (each way) commute, is that I have not listened to a single second of that radio station since the middle of March.  Even if/when the commute returns, I am 0% interested in ever tuning in again.  Small blessings.

I listened to him because he didn’t bore me, not because he was #1 in my heart.  Probably shouldn’t do that because he is beyond disrespectful when talking about anything UM, but I just couldn’t resist.

I was banned from texting the station after I suggested they do a poll about who was/is the best ever radio personality in Detroit, & who was the worst.  Then I gave them my opinion.  Hands down for me it’s Ernie Harwell & Valenti.

Mike is a piece of shit but I actually think Rico is worse. The guy sounds like a flat out dumbass when he speaks

This is hard to even listen to because he is obviously trolling. Do people not realize that everything is recorded, saved, revived these days or are people just becoming that much more stupid?

My wife was a big fan of “non-negotiable” when talking about conditions for things she wanted to do for the house or for things associated with vacations.  She stopped doing it when I explained continually getting non-negotiable conditions for those things basically made me decide not to bother with doing them.  She now says, “I would really like it if X” I know it still means non-negotiable, but it doesn’t immediately bring out the “Screw you” response.  I think people don’t always think about the response to these pieces of rhetorical flare.

Settle down...  When you pull up to as stop sign at an intersection, it means 'come to a full stop'.  Yet, you don't do that, do you?  (Unless there's a traffic - then you do!)  No, you don't.  Nobody does.  You do a 'rolling stop' and head on your way.  Nothing different here...

When you hear someone say 'full stop' slow down, look both ways to make sure nothing is coming, and go on your merry way.  No sense in getting bent out of shape about it!

It's more than just the head coach's coaching abilities or experience.  Not enough has been said about Juwan choosing outstanding assistant coaches.  The entire staff deserves credit.

Coach Howard seems to have learned on the fly quite well. ??

I’m not  a huge basketball fan, but my Dad was. I’d watch the games  with him during the Fab Five era and just beyond. I remember thinking how bummed he’d be during the down times in the aughts. I never figured we’d be here again. My old man would have loved this. now I’m watching with my son.

Thanks Juwan. ?
