Max Bielfeldt Queries: Can Anyone Answer?

Submitted by FauxMo on

As I am watching Indiana poop the proverbial bed against UNC, I am seeing Max Bielfeldt have a pretty decent game and started wondering:

-Has another player won Big Ten titles in basketball with two separate teams before Bielfeldt?

-Has another player gone to the Sweet 16 with two separate teams before him?

-Though it seems unlikely at the moment, if Indiana were to make it to the Final Four this year, would Bielfeldt become the first player in NCAA history to go with two separate teams???

Sorry if this has been covered, but I thought it was pretty interesting...

Still can't get over that he wasn't on OUR team. Everything says the kid basically begged and lost his spot to recruits we didn't even get.

decided not to keep Max for 5th year was partly to save spot for Jaylen Brown and other is to let the bigs develop with PTs. Max is what he is. A meh player who plays well against meh big but struggles against bigger and athletic bigs. Numbers shows that as well.

It's not like Max was our best big and he didn't do shit against quality bigs. Max was able to play the 4 which mitigate the size disadvantage something that he would never play under JB.

Thadmotta isn't bitching about Beilfeldt. He's bitching about Beilein and picking the most ridiculous point to argue. As if Beilfeldt, who started three games all year and apparently that is a point in his favor, was going to be amazing playing the 5 for us. Apparently being possibly better than a true freshman as a senior is enough of a reason to bring him back and take minutes and development time away from all the freshmen and sophomore big men on the team

People like you bitch about not having a future and then bitch about not having any bigs and then say something like we traded Beilfeldt for air. You're trolling. And just because he had the best stats doesn't mean he was our best big man. But you knew that, you're just choosing to try to argue a horrible point about a mediocre player. "Air" isn't what we traded Max for. We traded him for next year's Mo that wouldn't have gotten any playing time this year with Max on the team.

Derek Walton had more rebounds than Max this year, so based on only that and no other context, Walton was a better big man than Max. That is what your argument sounds like when you say "he had more rebounds as a senior than a true freshman, therefore he was our best big man."

Max was a solid role player that was not as good as he needed to be for this team. They needed the roster spot, just like Donnal likely not getting a 5th because he hasn't earned it. None of them are Pittsnogle or Morgan good. I really wish JB would have just played Wagner all year, let him grow by playing. We are always going to question JB's big rotation, and his rotations in general. Yet, JB wins in the tourneys, yearly. With Davis and Teske coming in next year, people should give credit to JB for trying to build on a weakness. It's hard to lose a McGary and get a dominant big every year. The best bigs generally go to the historical powerhouses: Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas. Belien's fighting history to get those players.

Exactly. Seems like a nice guy, but it's not like they lost out on double-double machine. This might be a little bias at play, but it seems like he plays well against bad teams or puts up some points in losses. Tonight so far--12 points, zero boards, down 20.

People were happy when he left, but for some reason the revisionist history around here was that he was a star in the making. He had a fine season, but he basically hits a 3 a game more than he did at UM and is still a defensive liability. Seems like a nice guy and all, but he wouldn't have made much of a difference here.

Kyle Wiltjer on Gonzaga wont the championship with Kentucky in 2012 and made the elite 8 last year. Also, he is still in the tournament this year.

First off, Bielfeldt wasn't better than Doyle and Donnal last year. As a senior, he was maybe as good as a true freshman and a redshirt freshman. Second, he wasn't better than Donnal this year. Indiana was a better team that had a position that fitted Max better, but in no way would Max have played the 5 better than Donnal this year. Third, not having Max on the team didn't cost us anything. We won 10 big 10 games and made it into the tournament with 2 senior leaders injured for the year. Max would have taken minutes away from Mo and we probably don't see him progress like he did. So people being upset probably had an unrealistic expectation when Spike and Caris went down. I thought we would be lucky to make the tournament without our best player.

Sports Illustrated actually put an article out there about the 28 players who will have had the honor of playing in the Tournament with multiple teams, and that's just this year actually - LINK

So, it isn't that common when you consider how many teams and players are in the tournament at least initially, which you would expect, but it would be interesting to do a historical look at how many of those have had a deep run with multiple teams.
