M up to 1st in latest Director's Cup standings
NACDA released their latest Winter standings for the Director's Cup this morning (final Winter results will come 4/23), and as expected Michigan jumped up to 1st place. Aided obviously by Men's and Women's Basketball, Wrestling, Swimming, and Indoor T&F. If ever there's a year for Michigan to take the title, this is it. Notre Dame is close behind, and Stanford will make its usual push. Notable schools:
- Michigan 761 pts
- Notre Dame 754
- Ohio State 701.5
- Stanford 690.5
- Texas 679.5
- Wisconsin 662.5
.... 42. Michigan State 329.5
What is left that will get counted in the final standings? I imagine hockey is one, so we’ll definitely get some points there. What else?
Left for Winter is Women's Bowling (yes), Men's Hockey, and Men's & Women's Gymnastics. So we'll get a bunch of points there.
Then obviously all the Spring sports.
Didn't know our Women's Bowling was soo good. I can't wait!
That knocked me over; I had no idea.
I was surprised by NCAA equestrian. A friends daughter rode for Okie St.
won't you spare him?
The last time the (club) women’s bowling team made the field of 64 was in 2010. I’ve always been an advocate of making them a varsity sport, it feels like for $100k-$200k per year you could buy yourself a good 70 directors cup points annually.
I kept checking the Director's Chip's website daily, hoping to get an update!
Top Ten Finishes:
Stanford 27 *
Florida 27
UCLA 23
North Carolina 22 *
Michigan 21
Texas 21 *
USC 18
* First place finishes
Michigan ice hockey is getting, at worst, 83 points. Likely a bunch from Gymnastics too (as someone else mentioned).
In the spring:
- Men's tennis (currently Top 10), Women's tennis & women's water polo (U-M isn't really a title contender but it would be an upset if they didn't make the national tournament here) should definitely score some points.
- Softball and baseball may be down in a relative sense, but simply making the tournament scores 25 points for each. I doubt U-M puts up goose-eggs here.
- I have no idea how good (or bad) U-M women's golf, women's rowing or men's T&F are in 2022, but U-M scored a combined 183 points across those three in spring 2021.
Net net: there's a lot still on the table.
For additional context, Texas won last year with a final score of 1252.0. Stanford won the previous however many, but going back to the 2015-2016 season, Stanford averaged about 1500 points.
Michigan led after the winter season last season with 744.5 points, followed closely by Stanford at 722. In 2019, Michigan ended winter in 2nd place with 912.75 behind Stanford with 1158.75.
I think we can expect in the neighborhood of 240 points from M and W Gym + M Hockey to close out the winter, giving us over 1000 points for the season. None of the other top 10 teams are in it for W Gym or Hockey, but some are sitll in it for M Gym (including UM).
I googled what's left to answer your question:
Final Winter: W Bowling, M Hockey, M-W Gym
Spring: W Water Polo, M Volleyball, M Beach VB, M-W Lax, M-W Tennis, M-W Golf, W Rowing, Softball, M-W Track and Field, Baseball
I would guess we get points in Hockey, M Gym, M-W Tennis, Softball, Baseball, Track and Field(?)
But, but, but we're not paying our athletes (yet) for good grades!!! Outrage!! Shame! Harbaugh's salary!
/s
Fire Bakich!!
I sure hope we can finish strong this year and take it.
Does anyone remember the head to head trophy versus staee back in the late 90's early 2000's? It was for all the men's and women's varsity sports. UM won it every year then it ended. There was a name and a trophy for it.
Go Blue and bring home the Director's Cup🏆
Damn. Can't believe Stanford actually lost last year. They have so many sports.
I believe there was a number of sports Stanford didn’t play due to Covid
Stanford always wins this, and we don't look as strong in baseball and softball as in past years, so with the amazing year we've had so far...do you think there's a chance?
Considering that Stanford has historically been in the lead after the Fall, and then again after the Winter, I think there's a chance. They're having another (relatively) down year, and they didn't win last year, so they're no longer a sure thing.
Softball and Baseball having relatively mediocre years for us when they are normally contenders has me worried about our ability to hold on in the spring. I do think gymnastics is a huge boost for us and hockey helps....but those teams are usually good anyway so it will come down to the wire. Probably depends as much on those other schools being down as anything Michigan does.
As I see has been noted-and I do not know the specifics here but the general reason that Stanford's "strength" has gone down is because, they have discontinued many of their "country club" sports-which they dominated. One of the reasons for this reduction was the Covid pandemic.
Which spring sports to we have a realistic chance of getting points
Keep in mind that to get points all you have to do is make the tournament or its equivalent (and obviously the further you go the more points). So Baseball, Softball, Water Polo, Track & Field should be no problem. I'm not sure how strong we are this year, but I believe we historically get points in Rowing and Tennis (we did last year). Maybe Golf and Lacrosse this year?
Michigan is currently ranked in both men's and women's tennis. The women are underperforming a bit, but the men are a top 5 team.
As a Cal alum and life long Wolverine, all I have to say about this is To Hell with ND and Fuck Stanfurd.
As a Cardinal and Wolverine, all i can say is may you be eaten by your namesake
Fire Warde Manuel
Fire Brandon!
Lacrosse teams, get on your horse...
doesn't stanford win this historically because they have loads of sports we don't play like underwater golf, desert badminton, blind surfing, etc.?
Yes, but they cut a lot of them during the pandemic and following the college admissions scandal.
Underwater golf is the true sport of champions.
and there's a real issue with whether or not you breath when you swing. the bubbles could affect your vision and follow-through.
I don't know about you guys; I'm not much of a golf player, but if/when I play, that variation of the game seems to happen a lot.
funny. i am much the same, but my meme is more song:
'chop, chop, go the woodsmen, go the woodsmen....'
Win a NC
Blood in the water with Stanford not performing as well this year.
Kinda of amazing how many B1G schools are always at the top of the leader board (usually w/ Stanford and UNC), but it seems like not many B1G championships. Maybe it's just because I mostly follow the money sports.
Been there, done that, right? I'll believe it when I see it ☺️
I imagine we must be the first school ever to send teams to the CFP, MBB Sweet 16, WBB Elite 8, and Frozen 4. Don't have time to do the research, but possibly first school with 3 of the 4 as well?
Not many schools ever would have the chance to accomplish that feat and it'd be even harder to reach the Frozen Four and the Final Four in men's basketball. Ohio State (11), Michigan State (10) and Michigan (8) are the only Big Ten hockey teams (including affiliate member Notre Dame) with more than four Final Four appearances in men's basketball.
As for another accomplishment that might be very impressive, ACC schools might have some chances at getting teams to the Final Four in men's and women's soccer, basketball and lacrosse.
I'd like to be alive when Michigan makes the college football playoffs, the NCAA tournaments in men's and women's soccer, field hockey, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, the men's hockey Frozen Four, men's and women's gymnastics and swimming and diving, baseball, softball, women's water polo, men's and women's lacrosse and tennis, finishes first in the NCAA wrestling tournament AND wins the Jeopardy College Tournament! Then, I'd be able to say this:
2023 right around the corner. You can make it!
