And then in the 7v7 he excelled, I believe winning 1st place against all the other teams*

He was arguably the best QB there in 7 v 7. He threw TDs in all 4 drives and took the least amount of attempts to do so. His completion percentage was a hair lower than Dylan Raiola, but Raiola took more attempts

It gives the evaluators the only real chance to look at these kids up against other D1 kids for the most part.

Yes, and Davis was still a top 3 performer at the Elite 11 in actual 7 v 7 when playing against a defense. It makes no sense that analysts would drop Davis for throwing against air when he kicked ass in 7 v 7 compared to everyone else at the Elite 11

But 7 v 7 isn’t the only event at the Elite 11. When all was said and done, they took the entire body of work into consideration and the highest I saw him ranked overall was 6th.

The rankings aren’t exact, they’re not perfect, but we’re discussing HOW the recruiting rankings are determined. 7v7 is just part of that. There’s a host of other drills they go through that also play part in telling how good a QB is. 7v7 is important. But accuracy drills, footwork drills, arm strength, deep ball, all of these things go into their evaluations.

Look, the QBs were each given ~15 passes in their 4 drives. Davis went 11/15 and Noland went 10/15, with Davis getting 4 TDs to Noland’s 2. Let’s not pretend like 15 throws in a single event is a big enough sample size to decide who the best QBs are. Davis did very well in the 7v7 portion of the event. He wasn’t head and shoulders above the other QBs, even if he did outperform them.

Are a lot of teams in the northern half of the country winning national championships? Because otherwise comparing ourselves to them feels more like a coping exercise than addressing what it will take to consistently compete for national championships

Michigan competes against OSU every year as their main competition for the Big Ten title and playoff berth. It seems kind of weird to say that they are the only team in the northern half of the country with any 5 star recruits so it shouldn't matter when Michigan doesn't land any. If it was Oregon pulling in multiple 5 star recruits, your argument would make more sense as they aren't a rival or a team we compete with every year.

Class size is important. It's always better to have more rather than less bullets in the chamber.

There are a lot of 4 stars in the class so the quality is very good, but I think people underrate the importance of quantity. In the NIL era, we should be bringing in 30 recruits a year.

Look at MSU's class. It looks like it is going to be small so that means they have to have a high hit rate. A bigger class provides a better margin for error.

The size of this class should be thought of as a strength and not as a reason to say that the class doesn't deserve to be in the top 5 or 10 or whatever.

Last year we recruited Morgan, Moore and maybe Kendrick Bell if he switches positions and the. So far it’s Goodwin and Stewart this year. Maybe we will land Bair but we sure as heck don’t prioritize wide receivers much.

Add in Clemons and Morris who also have high potential and 2-3 years left in the program. Their complementary skill sets in addition to the TE talent that will join them the field - that passing attack should be very effective.

Blair as a deep threat would instantly upgrade the WR mix, but he might be years away with a mission.

I wish him well wherever he chooses to go.  If he goes elsewhere, there will be other Shipps in the sea if you look out the portal.

No one shows up on any campus for a long time. IMO, Chances are if JJ shows the growth that he should be expected to show and Moore/Harbaugh let him throw more, Shipp will de-commit by seaons's end and join Davis. Or maybe UNC told him he won't ever have to block and it won't matter what Michigan's passing game looks like this year.

This isn't the worst news in the world... Between this year's and last year's recruiting classes, Michigan doesn't need another possession type.

I'd rather see Michigan take a swing on an unheralded recruit with the ability to stretch the field and keep defenses honest (I know we're in it for Bair, but he's not really a '24 recruit).

Wonder what happened there.  I just saw like six predictions on 247 at the top of the CB list.

I love our offense and love running the ball like we do, but I'd love to have a Howard/Derrick Alexander type of offense where we basically blow the doors off every other series with a long bomb or deeper route.   Like with CJ against OSU if the other team sells out to stop the run you need to punish them.

Really hope they let JJ air it out in some games so that Corum and Edwards aren't beat up and to just get the practice.  Getting Brice Underwood and some WRs in for future years would be good too.  You can't miss on CJ Carr, Dante Moore and Brice Underwood....

This is what has me a little concerned. Have a great TE class, but WRs have been lacking for a while now. I get the dynamic of our offense, but if UM truly wants to compete with the UGAs of the world, they need elite WRs to punish teams to do everything to stop the run. This will also create a lot more negative recruiting with Bryce which I believe is a talent that has not been seen in a while at QB.

Looks like the UNC negative recruiting worked, but I also feel like this recruitment isn’t over. Drake Maye is gone after this year and UNC has a new OC

Not a surprise. I'm sure it's gotten around that you have to be proficient -- and content -- as a blocking WR in this offense. That's pretty easy to recruit against.

On the positive side, our team is strong, our culture is strong, and we are back-to-back Big Ten Champs. We'll be fine.

If being honest, I think most here wouldn’t commit to Michigan if they were a 4 or 5 star receiver, if not a huge initial fan. You would want to go to a school that would develop and show off your skills. If OSU receivers would have come to Michigan the program design would make them look average.
Harbaugh has his system and it’s been working the past two years. It’s just the way things work, same way an elite RB wouldn’t want to go to an air raid offensive team.

Today's NFL clearly prioritizes receiving talent -- and results -- over blocking skills. Look at where the most prolific receivers go in the draft, blocking or no blocking.

Apart from that, it's very easy for an opposing recruiter to say things like "Do you want to catch TDs? Have a shot at a thousand-yard season? Get ten targets a game? Hell, son, that school in Michigan would rather run up the middle and throw to a tight end and have YOU do the blocking....."

July 16th, 2023 at 9:41 PM ^

Exactly.

I don't blame them though. I wouldn't want to play in our offense if I was a highly talented wide receiver. I'd want to play for a team where I actually got to catch the ball more than once or twice a game.

Like it or not, this offense just doesn't use WRs for...you know...actually receiving with any sort of frequency. Half the throws are to the TEs.

We have solid depth at WR and two good recruits this cycle already. If we want another we have a lot of time to identify/flip them and we could get hot on the recruiting trail again once games are being played. Good luck Shipp.
