In my (admittedly selfish…

In my (admittedly selfish and wishful) view, I'd like to see JJ and Donovan both return so they have another opportunity to show what they can do as the prominent offensive pieces, provided the coaches will run the offence through them and allow them to shine. Unless they are confident that they will be drafted on day 1 or 2, why not reap another year of NIL, hopefully improve their talents and draft stock, and either complete their degrees or add-on a MA or MSc to their resumes?

While the UI opportunity and…

While the UI opportunity and paycheque may tempt MH to take the job, I think and hope he should turn both down and wait it out here where he is succeeding at a high level.

Indiana is not a place where you are going to win enough to hold the job beyond the few years during which you get paid as a head coach before they fire you.  The math doesn't work for me unless your timeframe is 5 years or less after which you intend to retire.

If I were him or advising him, I'd bide my time in AA in his current position where he is successful and presumably doing well enough financially to pay his bills and save some, wait for JH to retire or move on to the NFL, Moore to become HC and he OC here and/or then be heir in waiting and/or presumptive future HC if Moore jumps to a HC position elsewhere if JH sticks around longer than expected.

By all measures MH is succeeding and thriving here.  Why go to Indiana and find himself in eternal purgatory and mediocracy and without a job in a few years as a guy who struggles to get to 4 wins?

And this makes all the more sense if JH follows thru on his desires that students get more or a share of the CFB revenue pie and extends notion that to his assistants by taking less and giving them more.

I'd like to see MH here for a long time, to be paid well enough that he is not interested in taking a HC position at a dead-end school, and in succession to step into the HC role when it presents

Best thing about these stats…

Best thing about these stats is that they reflect 4 quarters of football, 3 featuring our starters and the 4th our 2nd and 3 string guys.

Did we just kick a field…

Did we just kick a field goal after running a play that had lesser chance of gaining a first down so we get another data point about the health and reliability of our field goal team?

My wife and I help(ed) move…

My wife and I help(ed) move our now junior daughter in and out and/or across campus in August (wife) and May (me) for each of the last 3 years.  Daughter does not drive and asks us to help out, and we are only too glad to do so, get time with her and be on campus in small college town Maine. I suspect that daughter may not be returning home after graduation, so any time together in her happy place is welcome.

Stanford likely has an…

Stanford likely has an endowment investment fund sufficient to fund and lose money in all sports and still turn enough of a profit that cashflow is not an issue.  Not so Cal based on what I've read of UCLA's financial woes.

And Stanford apparently is also a solid performer in sports that do not generate cashflow.

If Stanford is prepared to join us on terms requiring that it fund its sports at comparable levels to other BIG10 schools receiving full revenue shares, and/or contribute to the conference the difference between what full share members receive and what they are worth, then money becomes less relevant.  We win because of academic branding, and maybe collaboration and opportunities having nothing to do with sports; Stanford wins by continuing to compete at a high level and enjoy the exposure that comes with being part of a P5 league.

Maybe too we require them to refuse to play Notre Dame ever again.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy end to summer.

But if NFL teams want WR's…

But if NFL teams want WR's who can block, isn't the negative recruiting counter-productive except for those recruits who do not aspire to play professionally?

Another vote of agreement. …

Another vote of agreement.  I used to go in and ask for them to suggest a classical record because I knew nothing about classical music.  They would ooh and aah about this or that record and thus I learned about classical music.

There was also an awesome liquor store almost but not quite kitty-corner to Steve's Lunch (which I also loved for introducing me to bi-bim-bop) along South U if I am recalling correctly dating back to 1983-7.  Similar to Schoolkids, I used to show up and ask them what I should drink tonight and thus I learned about wine.

Maybe Cade goes off piste…

Maybe Cade goes off piste and chooses an Ivy League, Stanford, Northwestern or another such school and uses his remaining 2 years of eligibility to get a world-class graduate degree in an area of interest while still getting to ball and maybe even bringing success to a struggling non-power 5 program. If he got into and graduated from Michigan, he has smarts, and his football IQ and resume seem to reinforce that and more.  If his future is not football on Sundays (maybe it is, I don't know), and I am in his shoes or his parent/friend/advisor, I am seriously considering/suggesting that he look at world-class academic opportunities where he can be QB1 more than power 5 opportunities regardless of whether he can be QB1.

The Ivies rejected by applications back in the day (and I am good that they did as I am not Ivy material for reasons explained to my daughter who was not accepted to any either but is happily enrolled at one of those excellent New England small liberal arts, summer camp with academics, colleges and who happens to be part of 2 NCAA Div 3 rugby championships as a walk-on on her resume). I gotta think the Ivies may well have looked at my applications differently if I had steered a traditional but suffering power 5 powerhouse to BIG championship and CFP levels on my resume.

Go grab the other brass ring of academic excellence and opportunity that is likely available to you young man.  If you can earn Harvard a stomping of Yale, or Stanford of UCLA or USC (yeah, ignore the realignment thingy), while earning a graduate degree there, then football has served you more] well than playing for Iowa I think.  Unless you are interested in creative writing because I recall being told once that Iowa has a great creative writing program.  But that may have been in the 80's when I was applying to college.

Regardless, I am grateful that Cade/you graced our sideline for as long as he did.  God's speed to you if you are a believer and heartfelt thanks regardless.  If you ever find yourself in Toronto or I might be of help to you in achieving whatever goals you have or will have, I'd be glad and grateful to grab a coffee or meal or do a Zoom call to say so in person.  [Note:  Cade, I am happy to provide you with my contact info privately]

Since there are no (or maybe…

Since there are no (or maybe only rarely in unusual circumstances that I am unaware of) graduate programs available to those of us without an undergraduate BA or BSc or BFA or other 4 year degree, I think the most important and prestigious degree UofM offers is its undergraduate degrees which qualify us for, and stimulate us to pursue, many of these graduate programs.  That UofM has so many highly ranked graduate programs speaks not only to the quality of our grad programs but also our undergrad programs, since those same grad students/TA's and profs are probably also teaching undergrads.  I am glad, grateful and proud of my UofM BA which helped me pursue other top flight graduate programs.

And like some of you who have already posted, I too did not get into any Ivy League schools, nor did my now sophomore kid at a great small liberal arts college in New England.  While we were both heart-broken and sad in the moment, I figure we are both better for that moment and will be there when my grandchildren and her children are also rejected from the Ivies.

And this from an earlier thread:

Do something that’s practical, something you’re reasonably interested in, and can earn a living in and you’ll be fine.

Thanks for this. An interesting read with a variety of interesting off-ramps to other interesting reads.  Happy Canadian long weekend for those who celebrate.

Thinking beyond 20 teams…

Thinking beyond 20 teams about a conference of the best academic institution in the land that play at a high enough level across enough sports that we become the Ivy League of athletics and academics.

We have our existing 14 teams, assuming we are not going to throw Rutgers or Nebraska out for failing to measure up athletically or academically.  If we can do, I am open to considering and doing if there are other candidates who measure up better on both metrics.  But Rutgers delivers NY?We get USC and UCLA, yeah.  LA is worth having.

Let's nab another 8 and have 4 divisions of 6 teams.  Teams play the others in their division, play another 4 games within the conference and can schedule the other 3 or 4 games against cannon fodder and/or other teams as they see fit. A 13 game schedule with 9 or 10 conference games.  I would also like to see ruled that only 1 of those non-conference games be against chum teams.

The other 9-10 teams?

Washington, Oregon and Stanford from the Pac 12.   Take all 3, which makes 19.

North Carolina, Duke, Virginia Tech and/or Georgia Tech from the ACC.

Give Notre Dame an offer with a 48 hour expiry for all sports - they pay the costs of extricating itself from its current deal with the ACC bc fuck them and their arrogance put it here.  If ND says yes, we are done at 24.

If we need more, I'd suggest going after Pittsburgh or Clemson, but Clemson is likely to be too tied to the SEC territory to do otherwise, while Pitt gives us another interesting market.

More outside the box, go after Utah and CO if they measure up academically.  And perhaps BYU to give the ultimate middle finger to ND if they decline

Singing off for the night.  Very exciting and interesting and glad that our conference is striking out boldly rather than resting on its laurels or waiting for a solution to passively fall into its lap

Can any of our undrafted…

Can any of our undrafted guys who remained in the draft until now return to college?

Academics?

Academics?

Perhaps the only silver…

Perhaps the only silver lining is that no one on this team should have any illusions about bouncing to the pros based on what we have seen this year.  Maybe bringing the band back next year together when the young guys will have some more seasoning will yield better results.

Maybe there is a silver…

Maybe there is a silver lining here:  our 1 and done's aren't so and we get them back for another year or 2.  And maybe Hunter also stays for another year to cement himself as a sure fire draft pick, similar to what Hutchinson and Haskins did with and for the football team.

Thinking this is another…

Thinking this is another deyunu moment that we get to share from time to time and which helps us believe in what comes next. echo’ing the cudos and praise for those who keep the lights on and info flowing here

Dayenu for a great season on so many levels.  We exceeded expectations, had a bunch of moments where we smoked good teams on tv (always great viewing) and have lots of reasons to believe in the future.  We are in a good place and blessed.  Wishing everyone a happy and healthy off-season.

And that with our clearly…

And that with our clearly superior SOS, not to mention 3 week layoff without practicing.  Not sure if this team is as exciting or rad as the Fab 5 but thinking they are as good.  And they have much better hair and beards per this bald, bearded and envious Canadian.  Go Bleu.

This is going to be a fun read and follow.  Wish the best for him and his brother, but again this is going to be good reading

Ah yes.  When I showed up in…

Ah yes.  When I showed up in A^2 as a Residential College freshman in 1983, my profs and TA's would question my use of humour and colour and such things.  It was particularly weird in French classes bc I learned Quebec and not Parisian French.  When challenged on it, I told profs and TA's that it was a matter of cultural pride, I am hard-wired and was "accommodated" for the most part, although I am still unsure why being Canadian is a disability instead of a strength.  [Full disclosure, I am the parent of a son with autism so I take disabilities seriously and am not poking fun except at myself.]

As for the CBC, I have been resentful of the CBC for most of my adult life because they keep showing Toronto Maple Leaf games when we have sucked for almost all of my conscious life (sure they won the Cup when I was 3, but who remembers much about when they were 3, and had a couple of good Dougie Gilmour years but at 56 I can count those good years on 1 hand).  I was a goalie and loved the sport until I realized the Leafs suck and, as puberty hit, a lot of really big and strong people were shooting bullets at my head.  Pivoted to skiing instead and that has made all the difference.

Stay safe my friends. Geau Bleu!

I think this is analogous to parents' petitions asking for a say whether summer camps should have opened or asking passengers on commercial airlines to vote to determine who their pilot will be.

Had the very same thoughts. …

Had the very same thoughts.  You hope that every college player, in any sport, has that moment to tell their grandkids about.

I was in this position back…

I was in this position back in the day, having been accepted to Michigan early in my senior year of high school and wait-listed at an Ivy.  Both would have been out-of-state as I am (proudly) Canadian.  I remember coming back from Michigan's orientation weekend knowing A^2 was the place for me.  I was very happy to have the decision behind me long before graduation and never thought of UM as a fall-back.  And I don't recall ever hearing anything more from the Ivy.

My high school age daughter is now starting to think about where to go to college, and having created the expectation that she can go abroad, I expect we will be treading the same ground as the OP in the not too distant future.  Cheers, happy holidays and GoBlue.

There is a rule of evidence…

There is a rule of evidence that says that a court can draw an adverse inference if a party in possession of relevant evidence fails or refuses to produce it in response to a valid request or summons.  If Meyer and his deputy deleted messages, a court is entitled to presume and find as a fact that the messages would be adverse to their interests and make the inferences about what the messages said, aside from and in addition to any inference about consciousness of guilt.  All we need is a valid claim by someone with standing and it should be like shooting fish in a barrel as my first boss and mentor used to say.

Safety at the end of the game?

So, MSU muffs a PAT and Peppers takes it back for a touchdown, and we only get 2 points or a safety?  There must be a rule here that I am not aware of.
