Im not that concerned about WRs honestly. We’re a run heavy team that features the tight ends in the passing game, taking stress off the WRs to begin with. We have a top 100 TE and a top 200 TE committed, I think it’s fair to consider them part of our passing weapons. Our top 6 pass catchers combined for 188 catches last season, Tight Ends combined for 51 of them (27.1%) and Edwards had another 18 (9.5%), if ~37% of our catches are going to non-WRs already, I don’t think it’s a huge deal if we can’t consistently grab elite WR recruits.

I don’t think you’ll ever truly be able to say we’re “loaded” at WR and that’s arguably the one position we don’t need to be loaded at. We’ve done a fine job getting good returns on our high 3*-low 4* types. Sprinkle in a top 200 WR every other year or so and we’ll be just fine. Michigan doesn’t have the offense to attract those high end WRs consistently.

We have 2 WRs committed and 2 TE and the TEs depending on the service are top 100 guys.   Stewart was #1 on our board as reported and Goodwin was a guy we want really bad and Barr should commit to us even though he will be a 2026 guy.   So to say WR is a concern is way off.   We are probably never going to get the top WRs in the nation due to our offense unless they have a connection to UM already.  We will get good WRs to us that can block and run and always get good to great TEs.   We need to just be a more balanced team on offense and then we might get the top WRs to consider us.   I would say we were loaded as last year that is what they were talking about was how much talent and depth at WR we have.   So much so 2 guys transferred.  One which I think is going to bit us in the butt is Anthony. Talk out of camp in Oklahoma is he is the fastest guy in the team and might be the #1 WR going into the season.

I wouldn’t say we were loaded last year at all. I’d say we had a solid and experienced group coming into the season, but loaded is probably a stretch. Only one receiver went for over 500 yards and only one had over 4 TDs. Part of that is the offense by design, but there’s got to be some production before I’d consider a “loaded” label.

But as the complaint is about recruiting, we weren’t loaded in that sense either. Bell was a low 3*. Wilson was a low 4*. CJ snuck inside the top 200 on the composite. But even Andrel Anthony that you’re concerned about leaving, mid-to-high 3*.

Our WR recruiting now isn’t really any different than it’s been and it’s fine. We don’t need high ranked receivers to make our offense hum. That high 3* to low 4* receiver and sprinkle in a top 200 type every other year or so is Michigan’s bread and butter, and that’s what we’re bringing in.

Win the Natty, have JJ go in 1st round with great passing numbers, and involve WRs to do so and Michigan will get top WRs wanting to play with Davis/Underwood predecessors. Top WRs want to play with top QBs in passing games that at least feature 1-2 guys, not just TEs.

Michigan started doing that in The Game and against TCU. The consistent passing game and stronger passing defense in playoffs will continue the momentum of Michigan becoming the next first choice for 5 stars.

With USC and UCLA coming into the league, it should help pull more top talent from California—where Michigan has historically gotten some great players.

Exactly. Anthony is a solid receiver, but at most places he’s a number 2 or even a 3 on a really good team. He would have even been number 3 on Michigan State last year. He’ll probably have some really good plays at Oklahoma and then he’ll have some like the free play at Michigan. Where JJ dropped a dime right in his lap and he dropped it. Word out of practice was he couldn’t be consistent with his health or catching. Made some super plays but also couldn’t be consistent.

Word out of practice was he couldn’t be consistent with his health or catching. Made some super plays but also couldn’t be consistent.

He also never got strong enough. His biggest issue in 2021 was arguably strength; he rarely got open, because he frequently got jammed into oblivion. I expected that after a year in the weight room he'd come into 2022 stronger and this wouldn't be an issue, but he was the same stick-figure, and continued to get jammed off his route on most plays. (Honestly reminded me of a play Roundtree had against Bama in 2012, where he was running a route down the sideline and the Bama CB shoved him about five yards out of bounds.)

Now this isn't to say he couldn't still address the issue, but you expect to see a freshman to sophomore leap, and if he couldn't add weight and muscle the first couple years, it becomes a legitimate worry that he'll never be able to...

Why missing on Shipp is a big loss?  He has average speed and is only 6 foot 1.  Nothing I have read or saw suggested he would be a stud WR.   To me Shipp was not a huge get or loss.   We can find a better one IMO.   Also Goodwin would have been the big loss if he went somewhere since he is a legacy kid.    Also Shipp probably wants to go out on his own and not  be known as Davis and the 2 WRs.

We are a run heavy team but nice try on that band aid of an excuse to try and cover the total failure recruiting WR’s for 2024.

JJ is no sure thing to go to the NFL after this season. He has the to P’s - he has great POTENTIAL but still a lot to PROVE.

He’s not interested in handling the ball off - he wants weapons.

Guess what Jayden isn’t interested in handing the ball off either. He was quoted around the time of his commitment he was assured he will have plenty of opportunities to throw the ball. He has to be totally underwhelmed with the 2 commits thus far - a weak 4 star and a 3 star. Both ranked way down the totem pole with not that impressive offer sheets.

WR and CB recruiting thus far for 2024 is an embarrassment and acting like it’s no big deal is laughable.

Any great QB wanting to get to the next level wants weapons on the outside and right now Michigan’s track record for getting the top WR’s in the country for some of the best QB’s is a bust.

“Total failure recruiting WRs in 2024.” What are you talking about? We’re getting the same quality of receiver we always get. High 3* and low 4* is what we bring in every year. Sometimes we add a top 200 type to the mix. Hell, Ronnie Bell wasn’t even in the top 1500 of the rankings and he’s been our best receiver over the last 5 years.

Pretty sure Davis is fine with the guys we got.  He is after all the teammate of one and the other was Michigans #1 WR for a long time.   Stewart is going to be good and we also have other guys Davis can throw to besides the guys committing in his class

WR, I kind of understand cause there a lot of games where UM throws the ball less than/around 20 times a game.  To get a loaded wr depth chart they need to throw the ball more.  They don't need to go full on air raid but getting the receivers more touches throughout the year would probably help wr recruiting

If we’re so loaded at WR why was our  top WR last season a 7th round draft pick?

As was pointed out last season by analysts during the TCU game. -

“ Michigan has no go to top flight receiver they can count on when the game is on the line”

There is no denying that statement unless you’re  living in an alternate reality.

When the  top WR on your team is a guy like C Johnson that’s a bad sign. He wouldn’t make the 3-4 deep on any top college program in the country except Michigan and the reason is because we lack top WR talent and our development of these guys is at a snails pace.

We have some youth in the WR room that will hopefully make a difference but we need top WR recruits if we want the top passers to chose Michigan as their college destination.

Thus far Bellamy and whoever have been a bust recruiting top tier talent at  WR for 2024.

Didn't I say we were loaded but didn't have the talent like the top 3 guys at OSU.   You can be loaded at a position and not have elite talent.   We have a lot of talent at the WR position but so far none have shown to be elite.   Maybe Wilson will be the guy this year but to me CJ is a good WR just never really had many opportunities due to us not passing much.   He is 6 foot 3 and runs in the 4.4s so put him on OSU I bet he is one of their top guys.   A offense which throws a lot will always make a WR look better.

Until last year did Michigan have a QB that the coaches would trust to throw the ball a lot? Peters was a bust, Mccaffrey didnt work out, okorn..... uh,  Patterson was the closest they came having someone they could depend on to take care of the ball.  He did alright until he played osu.  With QB backfires like that its amazing they had guys like DPJ and Collins to throw to.  This team HAD to run a lot.

Now they dont have to run all the time.  I can only assume they will trust JJ enough to throw more this year.  He has a level head, experience, and a rocket arm.  Another good reason to pass more this year is to keep Corum and Edwards healthy.  If JJ throw for 30 TDs which I think will happen then the WRs will start to come.  Especially if Underwood is on board.

The class is 4th nationally mostly on class size. Gotta get those top 50 players to get to the next level. I think our last 5 star was Will Johnson and that was before the NIL era.

The rankings are based more on the camps than they are actual football games anyway. It gives the evaluators the only real chance to look at these kids up against other D1 kids for the most part. Jadyn Davis is going to go through an entire football season and play a total of like 3 or 4 other kids that will play D1 football at the P5 level. They put more stock in how he performs in drills at camps with 20+ P5 level players.

Personally I don’t think they’re “wrong” in that line of thinking. How can you gauge a 6’6” 320lb offensive lineman when he spends 99% of his snaps lined up against a random 5’11” 230lb defensive end that is never going to play football after high school? Simple, you can’t. You’ll learn much more at camps where he’s lined up in drills against other D1 caliber athletes.

Davis is obviously a very good QB, and he’s throwing to two WRs that are going to play P5 football and he’s protected by a top 5 overall player in the 2025 class. How many teams in the state of North Carolina do you think have the talent to stand against that? It’s more telling to compare JD side by side against other quality QBs throwing to quality WRs against quality DBs. Now obviously it’s not perfect, you won’t get a good grasp on the intangibles and game situations. But there’s also the 7-on-7 circuit that is also going on in the off-season where those can be put on display. But at the end of the day, actual high school football games aren’t going to tell you a whole lot about these kids and the ranking evaluators know that.

JonnyHintz

July 16th, 2023 at 2:59 PM ^

They certainly are the main evaluation tool. Rivals in particular is noted for only giving the most in-depth analysis for players that attend THEIR camps. It’s much easier for these ranking evaluators to spend a weekend at one of these camps and evaluate a bunch of players at one time as they go up against each other than it is for them to scour thousands of hours of game tape, which is difficult to come by and often is a highlight tape and doesn’t give you both the pros and the cons. They then have to weigh in competition factors.

Buddy, go back and read again. We’re not talking about how programs decide who to offer. We’re not even talking about how programs evaluate talent.

We’re strictly talking about recruiting rankings and how recruiting rankings are determined. This entire conversation is centered around Davis’ fall in the rankings. How a college program evaluates talent isn’t relevant.

Maybe, but assuming they both play, OSU's QBs will always put up video game numbers and be pretty good. Davis might be better and have the better intangibles, but I'm sure Air will have CJ Stroud like numbers, like they always do. McCord will definitely be worse than CJ but he'll have great numbers.

In the Elite 11, didn't Jadyn have some trouble in the throwing drills where he asked to be Tom Brady in the pocket?  And then in the 7v7 he excelled, I believe winning 1st place against all the other teams*.  I think he'll be fine - Harbaugh doesn't ask any of his QB's to play the game like Brady does.

* - I might well be wrong with the first place thing, but his team fared pretty well...
