Looks like Florida State has its own version of 45-23(+1)

Submitted by FrankMurphy on September 3rd, 2023 at 11:16 PM

I don't particularly care for either of these teams, but I enjoyed watching this game because it felt like a carbon copy of 45-23.

Bonus: every time Brian Kelly squirms, an angel gets its wings.

Double Bonus: ESS EEE SEEEEEEE!

FSU’s philosophy is essentially the same as Michigan’s. It’s an o-line run dominant system and a lot of the point of the early runs that don’t do much is to pave the way for what comes in the second half. This was that. My wife is a Nole and they have become my second team, so I see every game for both teams, and this wasn’t all that shocking or surprising (to me). They are going to be dominant this year. The addition of Coleman is an absolute difference maker, in large part because it makes Wilson and Coleman an absolute matchup nightmare. Wilson just needs to consistently catch the ball (did in the second half, and it was game over).

Exactly. He gave long explanations about how the players didn't execute, came out flat in the 2nd half, missed plays, etc. but then followed up by saying "but that's on me". It's almost like someone was in his ear telling him not to forget to take some of the blame.

The local newspaper had a pretty reasonable take this morning 😊:

LSU didn’t settle for a frustrating ending against Florida State this time.

The Tigers went right for a double shot of embarrassment. Straight up. No ice.

Right now it looks like LSU’s only hope for a trip to Houston would be for a second Texas Bowl in three seasons. Meh.

Oof.

"The buck stops with me, and I've got to get our football team to understand and recognize that you've got to play this game for four quarters with a mentality. [...]  We just did not, for some reason. We thought we were somebody else. We thought we were the two-time national champion Georgia Bulldogs or something. I don't know what we thought, but we were mistaken. [...] it's how you respond to them. They have a chance to respond to this very disappointing performance in the second half.  So the choices they will have to make will be ones that start tomorrow."

Dude went from "It's me" to "we" to "it's them and they suck" in the space of a few sentences.

I watched this game tonight. I re-watched the Michigan-Ecu game a bit ago. Florida State plays very violent. I went to the Michigan game this past Saturday and it's hard to determine how they look from the stands. After watching the replay, Michigan does indeed play violent. That attitude is still there. Just a take. Go Blue!

I have to admit that the FSU team looked tough.  The RBs, receivers and QB all put their shoulders down, broke tackles and played with aggression.  Hassan Haskins-esque.  Games like that make fans out of people.

I miss playing ND or someone tough early in the season. The NCAA is structured so that it doesn't make sense to have a tough match up early, but I wish it was.    I still have nightmares about Terrell Buckley, Raghib Ismail and Cordell Stewart, but I remember all of those games vividly.  Who remembers Connecticut, Middle Tennessee, Air Force, Army, etc.

I have a personal rule against ever rooting for Florida teams, and especial hatred for FSU's music since suffering through the 1991 game my Freshman year BUT having said that Brian Kelly has forced me to break all my rules. I tuned in hoping for a decent game not expecting to care much about the outcome but dang if I don't love watching Brian Kelly get his ass handed to him.

Weirdly, one of my brothers' teams played a school that used that FSU music the same weekend. High school I am pretty sure given that apparently the HS fans had the same reaction as the UM student section and I remember my dad and I both singing "Fuuuuuuuuuuu** the Seminoles!" to the melody/rhythm, so much so that to this day I am afraid it is all I hear in my head when I hear their music. And he's an OSU fan LOL.

I'm actually shocked your buddy hummed it and didn't sing that lol. That is most of what I remember from that game. That and just wishing the torture would end.

I sat with a friend who is an FSU professor and watched that '91 humiliation, and she has rubbed it in ever since. But my wife, as it happens, went on to become an FSU faculty member herself. One of our first tough experiences here came in '08, during a very bad year for Bobby Bowden, when she got asked to screw the lightbulb out of her ceiling to save money during the budget crunch and he got a million dollar bonus the same week. Over time, grudgingly, I have come to think that Norvell's a good coach, though; he's certainly shown up for the right things here in Tallahassee and won over a lot of us who don't like (say) the fact that the city and country just gave FSU 21 million to put in better seats for boosters from a general fund that's supposed to address crying local needs. Last night made me a little more of a believer, though, I have to admit. I found myself wishing M had more big-stakes games early in the season; FSU is going to be a seasoned bunch come playoff time.

Suddenly, the ACC doesn't appear to be in all that bad a spot--I know a lot of people in other sports are delighted about the stimulus that Stanford is going to bring the conference in many of them. Academic stature heightened--if you did a combined average simple US News rank for both conferences, the ACC might well come out on top; the 'pre-eminent academic conference' boat looks like it has sailed for the B1G a bit. Will be interesting to see how Clemson looks tonight.

Watched the last 3 QTR of this game. FSU came out in 2nd half like UM did down 20-17 in C-BUS last year. Manball with some deep balls and misdirection plays.

Why shouldn’t they?

FSU looks damn good. Their offense was already going to be good this season. Trey Benson is probably going to be 1st RB taken in the draft. Jordan Travis is athletic as hell, and may not be the best passer, though he has improved, and his targets are a matchup nightmare for anybody.

Jared Verse coming back to college still blows my mind as he was probably a top 10 pick last year…legit could be an argument for #1 depending if a team needs a QB or not.

Their defense was the major question mark but they were impressive. Long season but that’s definitely a playoff team. Only weakness might be discipline, but they are gonna score a lot this season.

Nothing compares to our beatdown of OSU in Columbus.  Nothing!  The sheer magnitude of the Game alone is not comparable to LSU/FSU.

2022 was amazing and all, but I still gotta go with 2021. I mean, we hadn't beaten a ranked Ohio State team since before Facebook became a thing, let alone a top 5 ranked Ohio State team. We had never even played in the B1G Championship Game, let alone won it. Especially in light of the train wreck season of 2020, that 2021 win was cathartic in a way I can't even describe.

Mike Norvell out-coached Brian Kelly and it wasn't close.   It took him a minute to get out from under the debris from the fallen house that was FSU, but props to the FSU AD for sticking with him.  He's done a helluva job getting that program back to relevance.  Just in time for them to bolt the ACC for the best possible destination!

I'm not ready to buy in on FSU just yet, but they look like a frontrunner in the ACC right now.  LSU was overhyped coming into the season. UT and UGA hammered them last year and they were lucky to win a few other games. This is an 8-win team, maybe 9 if they get some breaks.

I don’t remember who wrote it, but someone was saying that the most important thing to any given recruit is relationships and coaching continuity.

The fact that Brian Kelly lost a game is great. But the fact that when Brian Kelly loses a game he shits all over his players…is what’s really going to help us here.
