Our women's golf team won the Big Ten tournament yesterday, giving Michigan its SEVENTH Big Ten Championship of the 2021-22 school year (a total that includes regular season and/or tournament titles). Let's look at the scoreboard and see how in how many sports each school has won a championship, shall we? (Full list here.)

Michigan - 7

Iowa - 4

Wisconsin - 3

Minnesota - 3

Ohio State - 3

Rutgers - 2

Penn State - 2

Indiana - 1

Illinois - 1

Maryland, Michigan State, Northwestern, Nebraska, Purdue - 0

I know I'm violating MGoLaw to say it, but Rutgers was a completely reasonable addition to the conference.  We added the flagship school of a state of 9 million people that produces a lot of talent.  Either some of that talent stays home and RU becomes good in a lot of sports, or other Big Ten teams raid it.

The one that doesn't bring much to the table is Nebraska.

At the time Nebraska seemed like a great pickup. Every year since they’ve looked like a bigger and bigger mistake. They’re not good at anything and, academically, they’re the worst school.

At this point Missouri would have been a better pickup because at least they are somewhat midwestern and they have more people than Wayne County.

Indeed.  Nebraska is the only school in the Big Ten that is not a member of the AAU (they were expelled in 2011) and would not have been considered for admittance to the Big Ten if they were not a member at the time.

I agree that Missouri would be a better fit.  Maybe we can trade Nebraska to the SEC for Missouri.  Nebraska could restart their rivalry with Oklahoma and we get a team that fits better in our footprint (borders IA and IL) and is more closely aligned with our academics.

I didn’t realize that Michigan didn’t win either Men’s or Women’s swimming & diving.  When was the last time that happened?  Seemed almost automatic most years.

Thanks for posting this.

Fairly incredible when you look at the overall competitive landscape in the Big Ten.

When the video says "We are the best university, in the world." - Darth Vader is not joking.

Let's freaking GO.

Go Blue!

i get all the hate for nebraska and others, but other than being a nerd with a bowtie and purple rimmed glasses, what the f does northwestern bring? Are they actually good at anything.

They don't get fiesty and chesty about their "accomplishments", so do we accept them because we like to feel like the B10 has academic prowess?

What athletic prowess do they have?

Another difference is they're the only private school in the B1G but they bring academics and "Chicagoland" to the B1G.

Athletically they are good in a few sports. Multiple National Titles in women's lacrosse. A national title in field hockey as well.

Also, numerous conference titles in fencing, men's golf (though not since 2006), and have the most B1G titles in women's tennis. They're not horrible in wrestling either from what I understand.

They just suck at the major sports.
