A Look at All the Schools That Have Won B1G Titles in 2021-22
Our women's golf team won the Big Ten tournament yesterday, giving Michigan its SEVENTH Big Ten Championship of the 2021-22 school year (a total that includes regular season and/or tournament titles). Let's look at the scoreboard and see how in how many sports each school has won a championship, shall we? (Full list here.)
Michigan - 7
Iowa - 4
Wisconsin - 3
Minnesota - 3
Ohio State - 3
Rutgers - 2
Penn State - 2
Indiana - 1
Illinois - 1
Maryland, Michigan State, Northwestern, Nebraska, Purdue - 0
lol how is Rutgers adding more to this conference than Michigan State
Seems right to me
At least you can have an intelligent argument with a Rutgers fan. Ever try to talk with a spartan fan?
I would say that they are about equal...
vs.
More than Michigan State and Illinois combined
As much as half of the conference combined!
Illinois has 11 second place finishes, and those are just like Championships, so yeah, they have the most.
I know I'm violating MGoLaw to say it, but Rutgers was a completely reasonable addition to the conference. We added the flagship school of a state of 9 million people that produces a lot of talent. Either some of that talent stays home and RU becomes good in a lot of sports, or other Big Ten teams raid it.
The one that doesn't bring much to the table is Nebraska.
I actually agree with this. Not to mention, Rutgers actually has some really good academic programs. In a lot of fields, Rutgers is actually more prestigious than every other school than Michigan and Northwestern for grad school in the humanities

For public schools, there's a pretty direct correlation between state contribution per student and academic reputation.
Agree. This script has definitely flipped.
At the time Nebraska seemed like a great pickup. Every year since they’ve looked like a bigger and bigger mistake. They’re not good at anything and, academically, they’re the worst school.
At this point Missouri would have been a better pickup because at least they are somewhat midwestern and they have more people than Wayne County.

For literally anything other than number of fans in the football stadium nebraska has been the worst addition

Their volleyball team is one of the truly elite programs in the country. They are on a home game sellout streak of 285 (!!!!) games and average over 8000 fans. That's insane.
but that's kinda what the powers that be cared most about, right?
Theyre pretty good at volleyball...and wrestling sometimes....
Women's bowling is their bread and butter.

Indeed. Nebraska is the only school in the Big Ten that is not a member of the AAU (they were expelled in 2011) and would not have been considered for admittance to the Big Ten if they were not a member at the time.
I agree that Missouri would be a better fit. Maybe we can trade Nebraska to the SEC for Missouri. Nebraska could restart their rivalry with Oklahoma and we get a team that fits better in our footprint (borders IA and IL) and is more closely aligned with our academics.

Plus it is a lot shorter drive to Columbia.
I think they won the Big Ten in baseball in 2021 and their softball team is in the race this year, and ours sadly isn't
and yet no spartan will complain because they won the only game they care about.
I actually don’t mind Rutgers anymore. They’re a decent basketball program and are coming around in football. Been a while since they’ve had any bad press.
In general, they’re kind of passing up Maryland
Rowing, mens and womens tennis, softball, and baseball are our best bets to come through.
I didn’t realize that Michigan didn’t win either Men’s or Women’s swimming & diving. When was the last time that happened? Seemed almost automatic most years.
We need to step up our game in diving.
Thanks Charles. Like your wine BTW
Looking at the full list you linked, I count 8 titles for Michigan.
PSU also had 3, not 2.
I thought I was clear in the OP that I was referring to the number of sports in which titles were won. So if you won both the regular season and tournament title in a sport, it just counted as one. But that’s just my methodology.
Oh, ok. I guess I didn't read it carefully. So 8 titles in 7 different sports.
BH82 - I only get 6 when ignoring instances where M won title and tournament. Counted it 3 times because I thought it was weird!
edit: women’s golf isn’t updated in the link.

Maryland also has at least one in mens lacrosse
More ammunition for that teacher to stick in his students' faces
Funny but appropriate
Thanks for posting this.
Fairly incredible when you look at the overall competitive landscape in the Big Ten.
When the video says "We are the best university, in the world." - Darth Vader is not joking.
Let's freaking GO.
Go Blue!

Maryland will (likely) have a couple by the end of the year. UMD already has 4 national championships since joining which is impressive.

i get all the hate for nebraska and others, but other than being a nerd with a bowtie and purple rimmed glasses, what the f does northwestern bring? Are they actually good at anything.
They don't get fiesty and chesty about their "accomplishments", so do we accept them because we like to feel like the B10 has academic prowess?
What athletic prowess do they have?

Another difference is they're the only private school in the B1G but they bring academics and "Chicagoland" to the B1G.
Athletically they are good in a few sports. Multiple National Titles in women's lacrosse. A national title in field hockey as well.
Also, numerous conference titles in fencing, men's golf (though not since 2006), and have the most B1G titles in women's tennis. They're not horrible in wrestling either from what I understand.
They just suck at the major sports.
Northwestern was a founding member of the Big Ten. They don't have to "bring" anything - they have been here all along.

It was something about the flu and some snow.
There are 42-27 reasons/opinions about this ^^^^^.
