The long McFarlin thread

Submitted by Brian on
[Note: this was edited down after the fact.] Jesus Christ: this guy. Actions have consequences, people. McFarlin has wasted plenty of time on this message board, but I was busy and didn't notice it. One: I'm tired of it. Two: trolls are dicks. I punched his information into google and came up with this creepy dog obsession. [link went here] Therein you can find his email (xx.xx) and phone number (xxxx). Oh, also he's banned. (Edited after posting.)

Why I'm always late to these parties? What happened? What did he do to cross the line? Please explain.

McFarlin wrote an uninformed rant bashing Rodriguez's recruiting. Other people pointed out why he was wrong and called him a troll. McFarlin blew a gasket, started making inappropriate accusations about said members' sexual preferences and tried to pretend to be a Ohio State troll. This time, Brian saw the mess and decided to show people why they shouldn't screw around on his site ever again.

Banning him was enough. If you define troll as someone who maliciously and deliberately intends to provoke, usually on boards for teams/causes/political issues/interests that they don't share, then McFarlin doesn't meet that criteria. He is a Michigan fan who is dumb. Unfortunately they exist. He couldn't take the criticism and pretended once to be a troll to cover his lack of ability to respond. Kind of pathetic, but none of those things are worthy of this treatment. Banning him was ok, but for the crime of being kind of dumb he now gets to lose lose his privacy at home. Not cool.

I agree with '87. Bash him all you want but throwing up personal info is not cool. But who am I? If it wasn't evident enough that it was a high school kid then we all need to check our meters. I hope you guys think before you go calling and harassing someone. GET A LIFE, this is a blog and this is the internets. IMO, Brian is the only one who has the right to puff his chest on this because he owns the damn thing. All the rest of us need to either get to work, class, or spend some time with our kids.

As someone that has done a similar thing on these boards (see 300 linear feet of books guy), I think the line is crossed in explicitly giving a home phone number, even IF it's publicly available. Plus, being the site owner, Brian shouldn't be the one to do this, as it has the APPEARANCE of privileged information. My internet savvy side approves, my business side disagrees.

...is normally not meted out to sanction the offender. It's normally used as a deterrent to others from conducting the same activity. (of course, other theories of punishment see it as rehabilitative, but not so here because of the banhammer). If Brian could search and find the guy's phone number (and I just searched and 2 seconds later found it myself), there is little harm in posting it here as a deterrent to others using Brian's website contrary to how he wants it to be used.

So, to ensure that people don't make uninformed posts (meaning their opinions are dumb as we define the term) we should "deter" them by publishing their personal information? This makes no sense at all. Again, he was not a troll, he was a guy that, as defined by the majority, (including me) was uninformed.

I don't think this had to do with uninformed posts as much as it had to do with persistent, annoying, insulting, antagonistic trolling he constantly engaged in. I'm not condoning harassment in any form; I'm just glad for the ban. What I do like is the outing of a troll. I think that does serve as a deterrent. This isn't Freep, or MLive, or Scout where this stuff runs rampant; it is someone's personal blog/livlihood we all get to participate in. As long as you're respectful, fine--come in and enjoy. If not, there will be a lot more than flaming and name-calling in store...

I like this. The world needs more cold-blooded harshness "My full blooded American Bulldog is a stud! Not only that but he is looking for a female to make some champion puppies with. My American Bulldog comes from a excellent pedigree and is an absolute tank. Take a look for yourself.... " Sounds like a demented personal ad. I almost expected a pic of his johnson to follow
