Knee Braces

Submitted by w2j2 on

I noticed that all the Wolverine offensive linemen are now wearing knee braces.  I have seen other teams do that, and it seems like a good idea to help prevent injuries.

Well, I would know because I watch football and knee braces aren't stealthy accessories.  I know even more because when I played high school football as an OL over 10 years ago (which was before player safety was taken as serious as it now is), it was required for all OL to wear them.  So at least that long ago.

I quit looking for more after I found pictures with Henne.  I couldnt find any where the Oline has them on and Navarre is the QB.  The last image is from The 2004 MSU game (Braylonfest)

Noticed just about everybody but the kickers are going with gloves this year. Probably a good thing since they seem to give you better grip and a little more protection....which is nice.

Molk not wearing them.

But continue scoffing at the idea that some might be interested in if/when the policy changed and why.  It was clearly recent since I can find plenty of pictures of OL not wearing them.

So maybe RR changed the policy after that.  Maybe all the players decided to start wearing them on their own.  Maybe Hoke changed the policy when he was hired.  Maybe the braces sucked and the technology improved which makes them more comfortable so more players are wearing them.

I think Michigan has a no visor policy too but I thought I saw a player with one yesterday.

This has been mandatory at Michigan for over 20 years. Today they have full knee braces, but in my day we had one bar that we taped to the outside of our legs to avoid getting rolled up on and tearing an MCL.

I was watching the 95 OSU game today and all of our OL had knee support. What a line, BTW, Janson and Runyan outside, Rod Payne at center!

That must have changed when Coach Rod took over. Under Lloyd, if you took the field without them, he, Paul Schmidt, and Jon Falk would have had your ass.

And I'm pretty sure it was standard before Lloyd took over. I suppose Coach Rod thought they might hinder the OLs speed and made it optional. They were not comfortable, that's for sure.

Florida State doesn't wear them on all knees.  They are pretty good.

Here's last years championship game.  Cameron Erving has a brace on one knee only.  Bryan Stork has nothing.

Tre Jackson, preseason All American.  One knee.

When I came out of retirement to fight a roided out guy with a sleep apnea mask on.
Long story short I had a slight back issue, climbed out a 300 foot hole, and saved Gotham City from nuclear annihilation. Or as I call it, a normal Tuesday.
