Kinda OT: Iowa's HC tossed from game
January 5th, 2014 at 9:37 PM ^
That said, fuck Wisconsin.
January 5th, 2014 at 9:39 PM ^
Yeah it is rediculous. Almost Duke levels of ref a-hattery.
January 5th, 2014 at 9:50 PM ^
REDiculous because it's wisconsin?

well, that's not as funny
January 5th, 2014 at 9:40 PM ^
To add though note to Fran: don't touch the officials. Almost as bad as punching a player.
January 6th, 2014 at 11:31 AM ^
and sometimes taking the TO or getting thrown fires up your team. . . Four free throws for Wisky as a result, though. . .

McCaffery is a horse's ass. He has often shown his ass to be horsy in Michigan games.
January 5th, 2014 at 9:42 PM ^
I think even a section of their fanbase knows what an abomination Wisconsin's team is to the sport
January 5th, 2014 at 9:45 PM ^
Had a friend from Wisconsin tell me the other day they're a different team this year. I'll believe it when I see it, because it's a fact of life that playing UW during conference season means losing 58-52.

This reminded me of Brian's post on the Bo Ryan Index.
http://mgoblog.com/category/tags/bo-ryan-index
McCaffery gets off to a monster start on the first line of Google images, but then it (surpisingly) peters out.
January 6th, 2014 at 1:10 PM ^
I probably got it more from this post, but you're right, in terms of sheer nightmare fuel faces of death, McCaffery is a cuddly fluffy puppy dog compared to Bo Ryan.
January 5th, 2014 at 9:45 PM ^
I can't blame him when I do the same things in front of the TV when we play Wisconsin.

Seems like more of Wisconsin thing than a Big Ten or NCAA thing. They have had a friendly whistle for as long as I can ever remember. At home and on the road, which is rare.
January 5th, 2014 at 9:52 PM ^
IIRC it's an unshakable idea that the Big Ten has its own refs. They're all just NCAA refs, no? That would mean it's almost certainly a nationwide issue, not just in the B1G
January 5th, 2014 at 10:48 PM ^
But it's true that there is a certain pool of NCAA refs who are based in the Midwest and thus call a lot of B1G games, because the NCAA tries to cut down on travel time for them. There are some NCAA refs (based in other regions of the country) that we pretty much never get, while we get TV Ted Valentine like 8 times a year.

What makes me made as that Wisconsin gets extreemly lucky every year, and this year is no different. The only play Osu and msu ONCE each, and BOTH of those are home games. How is that even remotely fair? God I hate wisconsin basketball.
January 5th, 2014 at 10:03 PM ^
There not just lucky, though. Let's not overlook the fact that they are a good basketball team. They're ranked 4th in the nation and Dekker is legit.
January 5th, 2014 at 10:09 PM ^
Yes they are. And once March rolls around and they have to play in the tourny in front of refs NOT afraid to upset their home crowd they will get quickly sent home.
Like they do every year.

Seed, then tournament result.
- 2002: 8/2nd round
- 2003: 5/sweet 16
- 2004: 6/second round
- 2005: 6/elite 8
- 2006: 9/first round
- 2007: 2/second round
- 2008: 3/sweet 16
- 2009: 12/second round
- 2010: 4/second round
- 2011: 4/sweet 16
- 2012: 4/sweet 16
- 2013: 5/second round
They've outperformed their seeding three times (2003, 2005, 2009), underperformed it twoce (2007. 2010). If seeds had held they'd have gone 16-12; they've gone 17-12.
I don't know where this tournament crash-and-burn meme came from, but it's bull.
January 6th, 2014 at 11:07 AM ^
Not to mention they made the final four in 2000 as an 8 seed.
January 6th, 2014 at 11:13 AM ^
I wasn't going to give Ryan credit for Bennett's success, and it's also true that they really did have more than their share of crashes in those years.
What's been remarkable under Ryan--well, aside from the fact that they always get in--is that they so often do exactly what you'd expect. No first-round disasters; no unexpected runs. He's the ultimate low-variance coach.
January 5th, 2014 at 10:38 PM ^
*extremely *mad *is *they
Really wishing I could edit or delete that. I'm struggling today. Point still applies, they have the easiest B10 schedule this year.
January 5th, 2014 at 10:18 PM ^
Sure glad they instituted those new, tough hand-checking rules. They've really clamped down on Wisconsin and forced them to play clean for once.
#whatutterhorseshit / #refsarepussysandafraidofthecrowdinwisconsin
Edit: Just watched the video of the ejection and I LOVE it. It drives me crazy when teams get fucked year after year after year in Wisconsin & Indiana by the officials and the coaches are suppose to just there quietly and take it while the game is stolen from them. Good for Fran for having the balls to take a stand and let those refs know that if they're going to do their typical give the game to Wisconsin bullshit (cause we wouldnt want to upset those Wisconsin fans) then he's going to let them have it. And the two calls that made him lose it were typical homer nonsense.

threw a chair down on the floor at the Breslin Center a couple years ago, put a dent in it. Problem was I was one of the few people who saw it and realized what it did. For the rest of the year State had a little section of wood that didn't match the rest of the floor.
January 5th, 2014 at 10:17 PM ^
My wife is even yelling, "He fouled him!" at the TV.
January 5th, 2014 at 10:27 PM ^
1. I understand Fran's anger. I don't condone it, but I understand it.
2. Geeze, both of those teams are good. I'm really impressed with Iowa who has a couple of beasts and Marble.
Not to hijak the thread, but Arkansas State had a cool trick play on the drive just before the end of the half. The OL was standing up and had a tiny running back crouching down behind them so as to not bee seen.

When it matters and when the refs are NOT afraid of their crowd they are average as average can be. Fuck Wisconsin.
January 5th, 2014 at 10:52 PM ^
Is it average to be in the tournament the last 13 yrs?
January 5th, 2014 at 11:10 PM ^
It is when you are a Top 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament almost every one of those years and still lose first or second round. They always, always, always underperform their seed line.
January 6th, 2014 at 10:39 AM ^
They've underperformed their seed line twice in Ryan's 12 years.

January 5th, 2014 at 10:58 PM ^
largely because Crean has become more insufferable than even Bo Ryan.
