Kemp to return for 5th year?

Hide your shoes.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:19 PM ^
i can't believe this is what has come of the venerable SI.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:32 PM ^
this reads like forbes contributor network stuff, which i guess is SI's new business model. spath clearly typed it out in one 3-minute burst and hit publish.
December 17th, 2019 at 2:32 PM ^
yup that article reeks of speculation which is ridiculous for a "real" website.. it looks like something you would find on our boards with random joe's speculating what might happen
December 17th, 2019 at 3:20 PM ^
What happened to SI is the same thing that’s been happening throughout the print media world: corporate honchos know that a great way to cut costs is to jettison all their experienced staff writers and photographers and instead “contract” out the work to poorly-paid digital freelancers who have no retirement or medical benefits, and frequently no real journalism skills, education, or training, either.
Needless to say, the corporate honchos giving people the axe don’t see any commensurate reduction in their own paychecks.

The link says michigan-wolverines-basketball too.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:28 PM ^
I don't know where else he would go. He has eligibility and we are thin at the position. It makes all the sense in the world to bring him back.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:35 PM ^
When did the NCAA rule that he will get a 5th year? He played in 2 games as a freshman - before the 4 game rule was enacted. He would need a ruling from the NCAA granting him a medical red shirt for that year before he has another year of eligibility..
December 17th, 2019 at 12:36 PM ^
True, but isn't it fair to say he would get that? Retroactive redshirts are provided all the time and the NCAA hasn't exactly been stingy when it comes to granting them recently.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:52 PM ^
Assuming the games he played in were early enough in the season and that he actually applies and gets M to provide information that would factually support the appeal it would probably be granted. I've seen one article that suggest he might be interested in returning but I've seen nothing saying that he has actually applied. He may be ready to move on to the next phase of his life, but if he does return, I don't think there is any question that he and Harbaugh would both want him at UM.
December 17th, 2019 at 5:06 PM ^
I wouldn't bet on Michigan having any favorable outcome if the NCAA is involved.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
Here's hoping that spells good things for Patterson!
December 17th, 2019 at 12:58 PM ^
Nope.
December 17th, 2019 at 9:03 PM ^
I just hope he wasn't a scout team player of the week during his "injury" as that would totally ruin his chances.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:34 PM ^
Not a big fan of Spath. He speculates guys that haven’t played a lot will hit the portal and then says we need to be shopping the portal as well. If we return Kemp plus we have Dwumfour, Hinton and Mazi, I doubt we are going to be looking too hard.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:41 PM ^
I don't know if it makes him look better or worse, but apparently he is unaware that Dwumfour is in the mix.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:34 PM ^
Kemp for 5. Patterson for 5. DPJ and Nico back then add Corum at RB and things will beclo9king good.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:51 PM ^
Would not shock me to see Patterson get a 5th year as long as Ole' Miss sends over the medical records. And with Lane Kiffin there, I think the attitude towards Harbaugh would be supportive ... I recall they are coach buddies.
December 17th, 2019 at 1:27 PM ^
Shea is not eligible for a medical redshirt. His 3 games played in 2016 were after the midway point of the season. His only possible path to eligibility would be to somehow have the any 4 game rule retroactive to 2016, which seems unlikely.
December 17th, 2019 at 2:19 PM ^
NCAA is granting that option these days, but I don't think he is going that direction. Shea was just invited to the Senior Bowl which is basically a very well attended tryout. So he is getting his chance to be drafted this year.
December 17th, 2019 at 2:23 PM ^
And we still go 9-3.
December 17th, 2019 at 7:08 PM ^

December 17th, 2019 at 12:34 PM ^
"The exact reasoning is unclear"
Because he wants to?
December 17th, 2019 at 1:49 PM ^
In that instance he's talking about the reason a 5th year was granted, not Kemp's motivation.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:42 PM ^
When did Carlo start playing basketball? Is this a move from JH to counter Illinois' Cockburn with a bigger body than both Teske and Davis can gen up?
Has JH given permission to JH for Kemp to head over to the bball team?
Alas, SI rides smoldering dick, anymore...
December 17th, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
This is way better than some transfer portal guy.
Getting Kemp back for a 5th year would be f-ing HUGE !
December 17th, 2019 at 2:16 PM ^
Agree! If true, this is the best news for the 2020 team that I have heard in a while. Carlo Kemp is a great leader on and off the field, and this is a position of need.
He is quite welcome to return!!!
December 17th, 2019 at 12:47 PM ^
Assuming this is true, this is big news for next year. Carlo did well this year and will be better next year.
December 17th, 2019 at 12:49 PM ^
That article mentioned Jeter and Paea maybe going to transfer portal, and that we will be shopping on it. Thats boldly refreshing to hear someone write that...I know it is bad form to say a kid will transfer but to come out and imply both will likely means it has weight....
Not sure about Jeter leaving...he plodded but he was coming off knee tear and maybe it take 18 months to come back from it, because I recall Harbaugh hyping him.
December 17th, 2019 at 1:47 PM ^
There was hype all over preseason. But back then Michigan also had Ben Mason starting at DT. When he actually got into games, I thought he looked about as bad as one can look. Close to zero get-off, pushed around, no short area quickness. Speight played ahead of him. Sure he's young and lots of things can change, but the limited amount of data on him is quite poor.
December 17th, 2019 at 1:27 PM ^
The lack of complete reporting is aggravating given that Dwumfor has eligibility. Don't sell an angle give us the facts.
December 17th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
Yikes. Did he forget about Dwumfour? How can you do that if your job is running something called Wolverine Digest? A random joe posting on mgoboard would get killed here doing something like that.
December 17th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
Maybe he can get over 300 lbs. I go from 200 to 225 every winter so it doesn’t seem hard to do. ?♂️
December 17th, 2019 at 11:32 PM ^
Obviously joking. But in all seriousness the guy came in as a LB. Making him a 285 pound DT has been pretty incredible.
He should be a run stopping SDE or a pass rushing DT next to a NG the size of a planet.
Paye - MAMMOTH, 2nd team all conference run stopper - Kemp - Hutch dominant DL.
Imagine that line and then in pass rushing situations taking out the huge NG, sliding Kemp to NG, Hutch to DT, Paye to SDE and putting in a guy like Uche.
We need more natural beef!! Give us a couple of guys that have to watch their weight. Onwenu types. The give us the project NG that starts at 275. And finally the 300 pounder that has to drop weight in order to add "good weight" so he take a couple of years.
4 NGs...that's it. Even if they can only play 33% of the snaps it's worth it.
December 17th, 2019 at 2:24 PM ^
If he can gain 15lbs and some technique he will be a force.
December 17th, 2019 at 2:56 PM ^
If I grew 3 inches and ran a 4.3, I'd be a force.
December 17th, 2019 at 2:42 PM ^
Is Mckeon in the same boat? Thought he would be coming back for some reason.
December 17th, 2019 at 6:32 PM ^
He's already declared for one of the post-season bowls. He'll be in the NFL next year.
December 17th, 2019 at 3:05 PM ^
Chuck and John Pagano are his uncles, I'm guessing he's getting pretty solid feed back on whether or not he should stay another year or declare.
December 17th, 2019 at 3:31 PM ^
yeah this would be big time with Mazi and Hinton ..hopefully..continuing to get stronger and more technically sound. Could be a nice DT rotation
And why wouldnt he not want to come back, another year to gain more weight, get stronger and possibly ball out next year to become a draft pick.
Get on that healthy weight gain program stat
December 17th, 2019 at 3:54 PM ^
why is basketball in the article's URL?
December 17th, 2019 at 5:32 PM ^
We need Hinton and Smith to start and Kemp to shed that artificial weight and play OLB where he belongs. Not a fan of bulking up smaller framed tweeners.
December 17th, 2019 at 8:59 PM ^
This is big time! With Hinton and Mazi...we've got a shot in the middle. Any word on Dwumfour? He should be back as well, right?
