Jordan Diamond's Momma: "I don't just want my son to play football, I also want him to get a good education."

Coach Petrino: "Well then, Arkansas is the right place for him!"

Jordan Diamond's Momma: "Oh?  Why's that?"

Coach Petrino: "Well, if you didn't know, the pig is a known to be a very smart animal."

Jordan Diamond's Momma: "Okay."

Coach Petrino: "Right.  And see, our mascot is called 'The Razorbacks.'"

Jordan Diamond's Momma: "What's a Razorback?"

Coach Petrino: "Well that's just it, you see--a Razorback is a kind of pig."

Jordan Diamond's Momma: "I don't see the connection."

Coach Petrino: "Well if Jordan plays for us, then he'll be a Razorback, you see.  And Razorbacks are pigs, and pigs are smart..."

Jordan Diamond's Momma: "You're an idiot."

Coach Petrino: "Well, we got books here too."

Jordan Diamond's Momma: "Okay.  We'll think about it..."

Peculiar recruitment of Mr. Diamond.  If I was forced to place a wager on who might have been one of our first recruits in the 2012 class, I'd have put my money on Diamond.  Alas, that's why I don't gamble.  I suck at it.  Hard.

Harvard, since the degree speaks for itself. If you want to be the best, you have to compete against the best. If you get here and you're great, you'll play. If you're not, learn from the kids better than you and get good enough. I mean honestly yeah, Diamond could be the best OL-man at Ball State, but I don't see him thinking about going there because the caliber of your opponents and of your own team is a big concern.

I think Diamond has the ability to be special at UM, but we are bringing in a great O-line class. And that is a concern if your goal is to play. Sometimes working harder can't make you become a starter if the guy in front of you is just better. The competition could just make him the best back-up in the nation. Again, not likely, but possible. It would be a fantastic situation for UM football, but it's got to be on his and his parent's mind. Anyway, Jordan himself has said he's not worried about competition, and he's the one making the decision in the end.

I'd obviously love Garnett, but with Kalis potentially projecting long-term as a guard, if we only are able to grab one more OL, I'd have hoped for another tackle.  But I'm greedy.

We shall see how it goes.

I agree, but Magnuson and Braden are tackles all the way, but all three of Kalis, Bars and Garnett, if he comes, are guards who could certainly play tackle. In fact, I think Rivals lists all three at OT. Stacey is probably the only one who couldn't play tackle if necessary. Point is, if we signed Garnett in addition to the group we have, I think we'd have three tackles and three guards when it all shook out.

The few that didn't bash him and actually had nice things to say about Kalis, laughed and made fun of Michigan fans who think Kalis will switch to guard.  He's a true, 100%, highly ranked tackle - for a reason, they all said, and it's clear if you've seen him play.  Again, take that for what it's worth.

That said, I hope we get one more top tier OL.

I really don't care which one, I like 'em all.  We need one.

Over Michigan?  I just don't get why people would be interested in a school that will most always finish in the middle of their conference with far inferior academics.

This class will win at least 2 Big 10 Championships with or without Diamond.

It is called perspective.  You and many of us who post here regularly appreciate the value of a great education, the kind you get at Michigan.  Don't assume that all people have that appreciation.  Also, don't assume that you can't get a decent education from many, many schools ranked far below us, including Arkansas.

All that you say is true, but it still doesn't make sense. I never understand why kids have a Top 2-3 that have one school that is extremely different from the other. Even Gunner Kiel's made sense because he has a bunch of ties to Indiana. But Michigan and Arkansas are as close to opposites as there are. Is Diamond from Arkansas or nearby?

You and I can compare Michigan and Arkansas and neither of us see an equality.  But that's us...my ties to Michigan go back a ways and I love and appreciate Michigan for what it is, academics, sports and culture.  Seen through the eyes of a 17 year old kid, Arkansas has much better weather in the winter, is southern with all those sweet talking southern babes and is in the SEC.  At the moment, the best football is played in the SEC. They have played in and won the last five NC's.  Also remember, that Arkansas is doing the same sales job as iMichigan.  Plus, this kid figures, right or wrong, he is going to play in the NFL and has a mother who maybe can't see the big picture.

You're still making a lot of sense.  The only "problem" with the logic I have is that Diamond has no apparent ties to Arkansas (that I know of).  He goes to high school in Chicago.  So unless he has family in the south, he's closer to the Big Ten then SEC.  Being the case, and knowing he is a highly-touted prospect, if he has the pick of an SEC school, I still don't understand why he'd choose Arkansas.  I think I am with the majority of people in academia and athletics in saying that Arkansas would not be in the top 3 SEC schools to attend.  Overall, if I'm thinking about football, academics, and extracurricular (e.g. girls), I'd say Florida would be #1 followed by Georgia and then LSU.  Arkansas?  Not so much.

I agree...if I were to choose an SEC school that had the combination of sports and solid academics, Florida would be my choice, unless the sport was basketball and then Vandy might be worthy of serious consideration due to its stellar academics.  But this is football and after reading your comments, your points make good sense.

This girl I was "seeing" a while back was in a sorority at Arkansas. She was definitely a fine POA, and had friends who were also very high on the rating scale(They were rich girls, so I don't think they represent the typical student down there)

But I have a great education from an SEC school and I am happy with it.  But I also didn't have a full ride scholarship to any institutions with top-tier academics.  If given the choice to go to an Arkansas or Vanderbilt, or in his case, Arkansas or Michigan, that is an easy choice. This is leaving the football aspect out of it, which we all know Michigan is a far superior program in every way.

I am not in these kids' shoes with lots of full ride offers, so I don't know what it is like, but I'm just saying I would pick the best combo of best program + the best academics + the best chance to play.

He obviously has a great chance to play at UM, which is why I don't understand Arkansas.

I think Diamond has the potential to be a great player but I don't like all the pub his mom is getting in his recruitment.  I love an involved parent as much as the next guy but I'm starting to get a Mitch Mustain's mom vibe from Mrs. D.  I hope I'm wrong for all parties involved.  I hate to see a kid's future get messed up because of overactive parenting.

I kind of have this same feeling, I understand his profile is high and he wants to get his teammates exposure but dang man enough of this flip flopping "I really like XXXX" and just driving all over the midwest visiting various schools on unofficials all the time ( fact check hes been to michigan how many times?).

This is why I dont have a problem with kids like Dunn who have stayed committed to a school as it was their favorite school growing up or any of the kids who have committed to OSU since the tat gate boat has arrived.

profitgoblue

August 16th, 2011 at 1:52 PM ^

I agree about the flip-flopping, but not because I hold the change of heart against kids.  Its a HUGE decision and I can't imagine how they make it (unless they are locked into a school like I was with Michigan).  The problem I have is with the way the decisions are handled.  All these articles about ranking top choices and parents favoring a school over another are ridiculous.  They just need to go about their business and make the decision without discussing the process with the press every 5 minutes.  No good comes from that but people just can't stay away from the spotlight, I guess.

That's how I feel. I wavered while picking a med school but I didn't go telling the press about it every time I thought I might prefer one over another (not that anyone was asking). If you don't have a clear favorite, you shouldn't be talking about it. Or, just generically praise everyone.

Would you guys be upset if we don't get EITHER?

Say we got Dunn, O'Brien, Payton and Darboh as the last 4.

For me, our OLine class is stacked, don't get me wrong...I'd LOVE to have Diamond and/or Garnett? Who wouldn't want 5-star OLmen. However, if we got 4 of the other say 10 guys we're targetting...I wouldn't lose sleep.

Are we really going to insult the intelligence/preferences of a recruits mother? Recruits read these boards, remember? We have no idea what the Diamond family's decision process is or how mama Diamond's preferences will play into it. And if he does go blue, this kind of conversation sure is welcoming.
