Joe Milton to Tennessee?

I am listening to 104.5 the zone here in Nashville, TN. The JMart and Ramon show stating Joe Milton is in that Tennessee student portal and enrolled in UT. Looks like he wants to play for the former UCF coach Josh Hipell.

Not sure why Milton would transfer to a school that wouldn’t be able to guarantee him the starting job. Tennessee already has former top 100 recruit Harrison Bailey and Virginia Tech transfer Hendon Hooker already competing for the job. If true this isn’t a very smart move unless he just doesn’t enjoy football anymore.

I live in Knoxville and expectations for next year are super low.  No real established starter (although both the guys mentioned above will have a head start) and Milton is entering his 4th year and has shown he has the tools to play at this level.  If he was injured last season maybe he does look more like the guy we saw in Minny to start the season(obviously should not have kept playing if he was that injured).  My guess he is betting on himself with a new coaching staff and a team that is in a major rebuild.  I hope he does well and will probably go watch a game or two if he is getting snaps.

No. I also had a similar take on that game. Michigan went off for over 250 yards rushing (including quite a few runs by Milton himself) that game, and we were letting our receivers get some yards. My take away from the Minnesota game on his PASSING and reading ability was, "Not bad, but also only his first game as starter." "He'll get better as he gains more time with the starters."

So you weren't impressed by an inexperienced QB in his first start on the road via a B1G team going 15/22 for 225 yards 1 TD and no interceptions and also had 52 yards rushing? I think your 'no' answer is factoring in the other games.

I think he took his time to make sure it was the right spot in terms of QB coaching and he was injured. I don't think Milton ever cared about being 'guaranteed' a starting role and this move just shows that to be the case. He has three years of eligibility and a degree from Michigan already in hand.

Meanwhile Northern Colorado cancelled their spring football (postponed 2020) season so it won't be until this fall that we see how Dylan McCaffrey is doing. He has two years remaining of eligibility.

"None of those guys had what it takes between the ears. Maybe Harbaugh hasn't been the problem all along."

It's a coach's job to evaluate the mental capability of recruits.

Give me a sharp kid with a mid-tier arm who actually processes what he's seeing and makes the correct choice versus some athletic freak with a cannon that loses his mind when #1 and #2 option is covered.

He's a competitor and he's betting on himself. Which is what countless kids in his position did before him.

Case in point: Shea Patterson in 2018. Brandon Peters and Dylan McCaffery were already on the roster and already had experience in the offense. Both were highly touted players. Shea bet on himself and it paid off.

It's too bad it didn't work out here. All accounts point to him being a great teammate, a competitor, and highly coachable. It sucks some of his shortcomings as a QB are the shortcomings that are hardest to overcome and coach out of someone at this point in their QB development.

I mean are his shortcomings any different than the shortcomings of seemingly any other QB Harbaugh has failed to develop since he got here? I see a trend, and it's not Milton specific, although I guess in hindsight the fact that the coaches have been unable to develop any QB that didn't arrive on campus fully formed meant that someone like Milton, who was known to be a project, was doomed from the start...

Well, at least he was not going to TN to play for a more innovative offense under Mike DeBord which might have imploded the board. I can see wanting to play for Josh due to his experience as a QB.

Good luck to him.

I don't understand why it took so long.  It seems odd that he wouldn't enroll in time to allow him to participate in spring football.
