I was starting to question whether or not that was the guy who played for Oklahoma back in the day.
Or possibly a distant relative of former Lions QB, Eric Hipple.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:16 AM ^
Would make sense. What's their QB situation like?
April 19th, 2021 at 10:44 AM ^
Terrible. It's a good opportunity for Milton.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:16 AM ^
Good for him. Probably a fun college town to be in. I can't imagine he starts for them
April 19th, 2021 at 10:16 AM ^
Not sure why Milton would transfer to a school that wouldn’t be able to guarantee him the starting job. Tennessee already has former top 100 recruit Harrison Bailey and Virginia Tech transfer Hendon Hooker already competing for the job. If true this isn’t a very smart move unless he just doesn’t enjoy football anymore.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:46 AM ^
Bailey hasn't looked good in the Spring so far and the QB who has so far showed out the best has been Brian Maurer who couldn't wrest the job away from Guarantano when the Vols were nearly begging for a QB to do just that.
It's a good opportunity for Milton.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:48 AM ^
I live in Knoxville and expectations for next year are super low. No real established starter (although both the guys mentioned above will have a head start) and Milton is entering his 4th year and has shown he has the tools to play at this level. If he was injured last season maybe he does look more like the guy we saw in Minny to start the season(obviously should not have kept playing if he was that injured). My guess he is betting on himself with a new coaching staff and a team that is in a major rebuild. I hope he does well and will probably go watch a game or two if he is getting snaps.
April 19th, 2021 at 11:02 AM ^
Am I the only one who wasn't all that impressed with Milton in the Minnesota game? He didn't perform poorly, but he also wasn't amazing. Mostly easy reads and short passes (that were frequently a bit behind the receiver).
April 19th, 2021 at 11:35 AM ^
No. I also had a similar take on that game. Michigan went off for over 250 yards rushing (including quite a few runs by Milton himself) that game, and we were letting our receivers get some yards. My take away from the Minnesota game on his PASSING and reading ability was, "Not bad, but also only his first game as starter." "He'll get better as he gains more time with the starters."
April 19th, 2021 at 12:03 PM ^
So you weren't impressed by an inexperienced QB in his first start on the road via a B1G team going 15/22 for 225 yards 1 TD and no interceptions and also had 52 yards rushing? I think your 'no' answer is factoring in the other games.
April 19th, 2021 at 12:19 PM ^
I thought he did a good job of managing that game. Unfortunately, the running game disappeared after that and the whole offense seemed to fall on his shoulders. That was never going to work unless Nico was out there drawing a ton of attention.
April 19th, 2021 at 12:26 PM ^
Yeah, they basically shelved anything that 'worked' in that game for whatever reason going forward.
April 19th, 2021 at 11:03 AM ^
I think he took his time to make sure it was the right spot in terms of QB coaching and he was injured. I don't think Milton ever cared about being 'guaranteed' a starting role and this move just shows that to be the case. He has three years of eligibility and a degree from Michigan already in hand.
Meanwhile Northern Colorado cancelled their spring football (postponed 2020) season so it won't be until this fall that we see how Dylan McCaffrey is doing. He has two years remaining of eligibility.
April 19th, 2021 at 12:33 PM ^
I'm beginning to think Harbaugh has been undone by flaky QBs.
O'Korn
Speight
Peters
McCaffrey
Milton
None of those guys had what it takes between the ears. Maybe Harbaugh hasn't been the problem all along.

"None of those guys had what it takes between the ears. Maybe Harbaugh hasn't been the problem all along."
BRUH
It's a coach's job to evaluate the mental capability of recruits.
Give me a sharp kid with a mid-tier arm who actually processes what he's seeing and makes the correct choice versus some athletic freak with a cannon that loses his mind when #1 and #2 option is covered.
Sure thing.
I present to you...Cade McNamara (hopefully)
April 19th, 2021 at 11:06 AM ^
He's a competitor and he's betting on himself. Which is what countless kids in his position did before him.
Case in point: Shea Patterson in 2018. Brandon Peters and Dylan McCaffery were already on the roster and already had experience in the offense. Both were highly touted players. Shea bet on himself and it paid off.
April 19th, 2021 at 12:24 PM ^
Shea bet on himself and it paid off.
Well sort of. If by "bet on himself" you mean he bet that he'd win the starting job, then yes. If on the other hand you meant something along the lines that he bet he'd go somewhere that would mold him into an NFL draft pick, not so much...
April 19th, 2021 at 12:29 PM ^
That’s what I meant. He bet on himself winning the job and he did.
April 19th, 2021 at 12:42 PM ^
I figured. It's moreso who would have expected that we'd land the 5* transfer QB, win his appeal for immediate eligibility, he'd start for two years and by all measures play pretty well, and yet the staff couldn't even develop him enough to get him drafted. I mean FML...
April 19th, 2021 at 11:22 AM ^
"unless he doesn't enjoy football anymore" is a very, very strange takeaway.
Transferring to the University of Tennessee to play football would indeed be a weird move if he decided he didn't like football anymore.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:17 AM ^
best of luck to him down there.
Agreed. I definitely liked him here and I was really rooting for him to be the guy. I hope he does well in Rocky Top!
April 19th, 2021 at 10:19 AM ^
If true, I'm wishing Joe success there at Tennessee. Would love to see him resurrect his qb career.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:34 AM ^
The Tennessee 247 people are confirming it on their board and he is listed in their student directory now
April 19th, 2021 at 10:37 AM ^
Can it be resurrected if it never truly began? I hope this is the beginning of a good career for him.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:19 AM ^
Looking forward to him hanging 50 on us in the 2022 Taxslayer Bowl.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:26 AM ^
That's assuming Michigan goes at least 6-6 this fall. LOL.
April 19th, 2021 at 11:20 AM ^
Also is assuming that joe Milton would put up those type of numbers
April 19th, 2021 at 11:40 AM ^
And that Tennessee goes at least 6-6
Cool... it's settled then. UT and Michigan for the 2022 toliet bowl.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:20 AM ^
It's too bad it didn't work out here. All accounts point to him being a great teammate, a competitor, and highly coachable. It sucks some of his shortcomings as a QB are the shortcomings that are hardest to overcome and coach out of someone at this point in their QB development.
April 19th, 2021 at 12:32 PM ^
It sucks some of his shortcomings as a QB are the shortcomings that are hardest to overcome and coach out of someone at this point in their QB development.
I mean are his shortcomings any different than the shortcomings of seemingly any other QB Harbaugh has failed to develop since he got here? I see a trend, and it's not Milton specific, although I guess in hindsight the fact that the coaches have been unable to develop any QB that didn't arrive on campus fully formed meant that someone like Milton, who was known to be a project, was doomed from the start...
April 19th, 2021 at 10:39 AM ^
Poor kid.
Wish him well. Tennessee is cursed (even worse than Michigan).
I know, I'm the one that cursed them.
Go Blue.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:39 AM ^
Well, at least he was not going to TN to play for a more innovative offense under Mike DeBord which might have imploded the board. I can see wanting to play for Josh due to his experience as a QB.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:40 AM ^
Good luck to him.
I don't understand why it took so long. It seems odd that he wouldn't enroll in time to allow him to participate in spring football.
April 19th, 2021 at 11:44 AM ^
I think he graduated, so maybe he had to finish the semester?
April 19th, 2021 at 12:14 PM ^
Admissions. Ask all of the residents of TN. Vanderbilt is for the geniuses, but UT ain’t far behind...I wish I was kidding
April 19th, 2021 at 10:53 AM ^
If he thought the fan base here was hard on him, wait till he gets to Knoxville fans, who are both brutal and racist.
April 19th, 2021 at 12:27 PM ^
The folks a few rows behind me in Michigan Stadium are also that way, considering the comments about Denard and Devin over the years.
April 19th, 2021 at 10:54 AM ^
I believe the proper headline is: Joe Milton to UCF - Knoxville Campus
