Jim Harbaugh: 'We're very hopeful that he [Jourdan Lewis] can play this Saturday'

Thank goodness. Tired of getting burned on simple slants and the occasional deep ball.

Edit: Another quote from Harbaugh: "[Brian Mone and Taco Charleton] could be graduating this week from the training room to the field ... we'll see."

That doesn't inspire a ton of confidence. I know we haven't really needed him yet this season, but it sucks that the season is already 1/4 over and he hasn't even stepped on the field. Not the way you want to spend your senior season.

I hear you, but it's the less meaningful 1/4 of the season that is behind us.  And not being healthy enough to play or reinjuring something is a much worse way to spend your senior season.  I'm okay with him being brought along slowly in hopes that he's good to go for the meat of the conference schedule.  In Harbaugh I trust.

All I know is that Lewis's minor injury has prevented him from playing our OOC portion of the schedule and has made him a big, fat maybe for our conference opener.  So no matter how you slice it - he's missed signficant playing time already and may miss even more.

I'm so glad his injury isnt anything major though.

For the love of all that is good and decent, we need him back. PSU has some very talented receivers, and we need Lewis back to shut down one half of the field.

Having Mone and Charlton back to bottle up Barkley would be a big help, too.

having Lewis back won't change the targeting of Michigan's safeties as weak links in the secondary in the deep middle and vacated interior of the defense as the Wolverines continue to apply pressure. That is, unless they alter their nickel and dime looks with the addition of our hero into the lineup. Until Michigan can find better matchups, fitgure on the oppostion lining up speedy slots and rotating their deep threats in situations where Michgan will be pressed to find double coverage help deep and these guys can run past our safeties.

What's the answer: Get to the qb quicker. And Michigan is significantly better when Gary gets snaps. But understand, what teams are now going to do to Michigan is take advantage of their aggression with counters and misdirection and force the defenders who are vacating their normal coverage area to those without support.

I think it's less clear-cut than you're laying out. With Lewis, Michigan can use more 3-corner lineups that puts Lewis on those dangerous slot receivers. Without him, Michigan would be fielding a corner that's way down the depth chart (perhaps fifth string if Long, also out, is high enough on the chart). It is likely that they adjusted their packages for his absence, and UCF and Colorado are two of the worst teams on our schedule for that to happen. Safety issues may still be there occasionally, but I think they can obscure it better with Lewis. For example, they can take out a guy like Thomas and play Peppers at safety, with Lewis as the third corner, and still play the run soundly.

Get Taco and Mone back into the rotation and we have a 4 man DL that can get to the QB. Leaves you the ability to drop LB's into zones where the skinny posts aren't burning you. Then if they try to go deep the pressure is there and they can't get the pass off. Need all parts of the defense working to shut down teams.

and the fact Lewis suited up last week suggests he will play Saturday.  Sure hope so for his sake and the team's sake.   Taco or Mone returning would be a nice bonus.

You can really appreciate what Wilson was doing at the safety position after seeing the difference this year.  He and Peppers back there really took things to another level.

But can we also give a bit of credit to Colorado?  The first TD was a blown coverage, but their QB was dropping in perfect post passes...soft and right over the shoulder.

Not trying to make excuses and things definitely need to imporve on the backend ----and in the pass rush---and I think they will with fewer injuries and cleaning things up, but those were also some sweet passes.

I mean, how often does a college QB under or overthrow those passes?  FOr Rudduck, he missed like 10 of those last year in the first 3 games.  Just saying, their QB was on and deserves some props.

If I recall someone in the comments section said Sam Webb had a "gut feeling" that Lewis will play against PSU this weekend.

It works perfectly as he will knock the rust off and then be ready to go for Wisconsin (although they are not exactly a dangerous throwing team).

Putting Lewis on the field to shadow Shay Fields would have been a huge boost right out of the gate Saturday.  Fields was able to get open enough against Stribling, Clark, Hill, and Thomas.  But being shadowed by an All-American corner, those posts to him wouldn't have been there.  Think how Chesson was shut down by Awuzie...  You take away CU's best WR and they don't have much to worry you about downfield.

Also, when Gary replaced Winovich's looping speed rushes, those edge plays largely stopped in thier tracks.  I like Winovich, but he has a lot to learn about containment!

I'm wondering if he's looking at the schedule, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of his team and their opponents, and is treating this like the NFL preseason.  I have a feeling that Lewis would've played by now if it was MSU or OSU we were playing, but there's no point in risking it with our non-conference schedule the way it was.  Just like I'm sure there are a lot of the offensive/defensive gameplan that we haven't seen yet.

I could be wrong, but I feel like there is so much in terms of gameplan and personnel that we won't see until MSU because it's not necessary yet.  I don't think Peppers would've seen a snap on offense if we had another 30 point first half lead.

From PFF's twitter account: 's highest-graded CB thru 3 weeks is 's Channing Stribling. 5 catches on 14 targets, a pick 6 & QB rating against of just 22.6.

Not bad for who will be our #2 corner when Lewis returns. Also, an underrated part of Lewis returning is that we can reduce the coverage burden on our safety's and even pull one of them in obvious passing downs in favor of a 3rd CB like clark.

this week also. Could've used them last weekend, but the sooner the better. Would like to see them all back and getting reps before we play the likes of MSU.

This would be big news for Michigan if they could get 2 or 3 of those guys in the game this week. Even if it's limited duty for Taco and Mone, getting to game speed would be great. Lewis is fun to watch, I'm selfish and want to see him play.
