Unfortunately, it is virtually impossible to totally ignore your posts (scroll past them, we can do) unless I or another mod caves them, but then you couldn't post them under this name, so it's a whole weird area we're in here.

Needless to say, concern trolling as you've practiced in the past more or less explains the point total. People do pay attention to those to some extent anyway.

everything i wrote

none of it's trolling

i do not think harbaugh is going to stay at michigan because harbaugh's never stayed anywhere. maybe i turn out to be wrong, but that's not a troll comment.

noting that franklin actually has beat Ohio State and actually has won the BIg 10 as justification for his contract is right and factual and not trolling

anyone who thinks any of my comments are trolling are simply too delicate to be on a comment board.

i want michigan to win it all but until harbaugh at least beats ohio state or wins the big 10, it will be a disappointment -- and less than what franklin has done at penn state, which has had a far harder return path.

and none of that is trolling.

This is some of the dumbest logic ever.  Unfortunately you are not alone as most Spartans use the same logic.  Saying Harbaugh never stayed anywhere is like saying Nick Saban never stayed anywhere.  Clearly he is leaving Alabama right?

The way you move up in coaching is to produce results at lower levels until someone is willing to give you a shot at a bigger gig.  Urban Meyer never stayed at anywhere long using your logic.  Do you think he's leaving OSU anytime soon?  Please do better next time you decide to post.

Dude was a former NFL coach. There's no more up.

Even though Harbaugh's actual results at Michigan have been a disappointment I doubt there's anyone the team can get that's better. But Harbaugh has proven he likes to head off to the new challenge so I predict he won't be here past 2019.

Hey, if I turn out to be wrong, fine.

Harbaugh's won double-digits in his first two years (one of four caches in conference history to do so), you claim that Harbaugh's results are "a disappointment," and you claim to be a Michigan Man?  Bullshit, troll.  No Michigan Man would be disappointed with the results Harbaugh has gotten.

Harbaugh has proven that he thinks Michigan is better than any NFL job bar maybe New England or Seattle (because he turned them down to come to Michigan).  His parents have moved in next door to him, and his kids are going to the same schools he went to.  No way he leaves Ann Arbor until his kids are grown.  You haven't a fucking clue, because you aren't a Michigan Man and so haven't been paying attention.

is such a disappointment

and that's what's *expected* this year!

You know it. You're a troll. Pretending you know Harbaugh's future plans and acting as if another third place finish in the division is some grand achievement. Go home.

That's what is great about college football. Having to prove yourself year in and year out. As Michigan steamrolls psu yearly we will start to understand who has the better coach and team. Harbaugh will win NC's and Franklin will not. PSU should feel very lucky they did not face Clemson because they could have lost by sixty. I used to like that school until it was discovered they were enabling a child raper. I can't stand the coaches that were there also at that time. Schiano, Johnson, DC at ucla. All knew just like joe pa. Have nothing against Franklin but he is not in Harbaugh's league. The season is coming and psu's reality check is upon them.

That was my first thought as well. But looking back at it, the Weis situation was so much more comical. ND waited just 4 games into his first season before offering that obscene deal. I equally hope for this to blow up in Penn State's face but it's not even in the same universe as Weis.

Good for him. Penn State is capable of loyalty to its head football coach unlike any other college. Win a few games there, and people will forgive you enabling a child rapist. Unfortunately, that has been proven to NOT be hyperbole in any way.

This guy will never be a long term problem for Harbaugh.

They'll end up choking on this contract and they'll pay dearly

for the fluke that the 2016 season really was.

They should have waited just a little bit longer.

I bet he ran as fast as he could to sign those papers.

I remember reading the Schadenfreude comments from PSU fans during the Michigan game. They were damn near suicidal and claiming that Franklin was a clown who could never hang with Harbaugh/Meyer type coaches. Things are never nearly as bad or as worse as college football fans make them out to be.

Wait till Joe Moorhead gets picked up by someone else in the next 1-2 years and they're just stuck with James Franklin again. Charlie Weis is the correct comparsion

The more I think about it, the more I like Mississippi's law about only allowing four-year contracts for coaches.

What the hell does Penn State have to gain from this?

What happens if Penn State craps the bed this season?

Why not wait to see what kind of bowl game Penn State ends up in?

I do not get colleges extending coaches when the coach holds most of the cards. I mean, for crying out loud, at least wait until the team has a quality stretch longer than 8 freaking games.

Seems like a very good time for Franklin and a bad time for PSU: right before a high expectations season, and right after a surprise breakout season. Further, when Moorehead leaves, could be more big trouble...

Look at 2018 schedule. Could be a verry interesting year for PSU if he is expected to win 9-10 games.

Moorhead leaves? Moorhead has been big for them but had he arrived a year earlier when Hackenberg was the QB and Gesicki was going through a slump do you think he would've had the same success? McSorley becoming the QB was a huge boost for them as well and he will be back next year. They have recruited extremely well on the offensive side of the ball. They have the #1 RB, #1 TE and #1 WR currently committed to them.

why this board pounds Franklin.

Has won more than our beloved Harbaugh so far.

I don't think that will last, but give the man his due.

he hasn`t come close to beating michigan,   and one play in either the iowa game or the osu game psu isnt even in the championship game.

But we shat the bed and opened the door for PSU to win the conference. We should've taken care of our own business. Plain and simple.

I wouldn't dare presume Franklin is a better coach than Harbaugh. He isn't. But he's beaten OSU. He's won the conference. Harbaugh's done neither of those things. I give the man his due.

Perkis-Size Me

Did you at all read my post? I directly stated that "I wouldn't dare presume Franklin is a better coach than Harbaugh. He isn't."

I don't think its at all wrong to give Franklin his due (nor to give Dilfer his due for winning a Super Bowl), nor is it wrong to make true observations. He's beaten OSU and won the conference. Harbaugh hasn't. That doesn't mean Franklin is a better coach. Hard for me to give Franklin shit when he's accomplished things that Harbaugh hasn't.

grumbler

August 19th, 2017 at 10:12 PM ^

The problem with this reasoning is that it leads to the observation that Mark Dantonio has won three conference championships and so should be making three times as much as Franklin.

Franklin has been at PSU for three years.  His average year in that span would be 8-4.  You can't justify a huge contract like this based on the fact that he got the team to a B10 championship for one year, never having been competitive before this last year (he was 6-10 in the B10 his first two years, while harbaugh has been 13-4 his forst two seasons.

So, saying that Franklin has done two things in three years that Harbaugh hasn't done in two isn't much of a comparison, since you are giving Franklin 50% more time to accomplish it.

Franklin already had a big contract, ten years (through 2024) at 4.5 million per year.  It wasn't guaranteed, though.  There was no need to give him a new contract now, with the old one still having seven years to run.

did you "shat" your life because everyone else thinks you haven`t achieved in your life like you should have? stop ignoring everything harbaugh has achieved because it doesn`t fit your narrative. no matter what happens with osu, who could possibly coach at michigan and do better?

Perkis-Size Me

You're the definition of an excuse-maker. "One play in either the iowa game or the osu game psu isn't even in the championship game." You talk like Michigan deserved to be in the championship game. It didn't. If it did, they wouldn't have lost to OSU, and they sure as hell wouldn't have lost to a lowly Iowa team that continues to play football like its 1949.

Michigan had it's chances, and it didn't capitalize.

Not at all ignoring what Harbaugh has acheived thus far, and can definitely lead this team to even greater heights. But his team did shit the bed in the Iowa and OSU game last year. Both of those games could have, and arguably, should have been won. But Michigan's own mistakes cost them in both games.

so you don`t think playing games down to the last play is any different than getting your ass kicked? teams are going to lose games everybody thinks they shouldn`t. who do you think feels worse you or the players and coaches that put the effort into it? all you do is watch, but you have all the answers.

There's too much juvenile back-and-forth in this sub-thread discussion and not enough logical analysis (and really, we can do better as a fan base - this is not 11W or rcmb). Yes, Field Goal Franklin, hereafter FGF, technically won the Big Ten last year, despite losing to "non-rival" Pitt and pulling out a late home win against a statistically superior OSU team. He got a OT win over a Wisc team that collapsed near the end of the game, followed by a Rose Bowl appearance where his team was shut-out for two entire quarters in a game that was defense optional for the most part. Kudos to FGF (and his agent). This last season was the only one where his team had a win percentage greater than 60% (each of his prior three seasons has only 7 wins), leaving him at a 62.5% mark for a 4 year tenure - Harbaugh has a 77% mark after 2 years. While this single season bump could be a sign of improvement, there does not seem to be enough evidence to claim a trend.

a year or two from now, the better. And if he stays, win-win for the good guys, as well. Greatness is not in the cards for Mr. Franklin.

*I know that in the past some posters have objected to this designation. Sorry, for me it's clever, simple, irresistible, and completely apt. I suggest that everyone else adopt it.

I figured the Charlie Weis and 49-10 comments were going to come out sooner or later. I don't think Franklin is a better coach than Harbaugh, but he has the hardware and Harbaugh doesn't.

He won a conference title with a program that most assumed would take 15-20 years to fully recover. He beat OSU. Was a fluky game, but he did it nonetheless. Harbaugh has done neither of those things. I think most PSU fans are fine with having their ass kicked by Michigan but beating OSU and winning the conference instead. I would be MORE than happy to take a 49-10 beating too if it meant we beat OSU and won the conference.

Now we'll have to wait and see how sustainable his success is or if last year was a fluke a la Brady Hoke's first year, but I'm not going to rag on the guy for accomplishing the things that our own coach hasn't been able to do.

If Franklin took that team over instead of O'Brien, they are probably a dumpster fire.  They wouldn't have had Hackenberg or Allen Robinson.  The only way PSU would've been irrelevent for 15+ years was if they got the death penalty.
