Jake Rudock appreciation thread

Submitted by michiganfanforlife on
I was just listening to SIRIUS radio and Butch Davis (former College/NFL coach) said that Harbaugh is really fortunate that he got Jake for this year. He went on to explain that he was on the field for the Utah pregame and he thinks that if we had to play anyone not named Jake this year we might not have any wins thus far this season. Harbaugh keeps saying that Jake is by far our best option, and this supports that. If you're anything like me you've spent a ton of energy pointing out lack of downfield accuracy, turnover snafus and more. I feel like we should instead focus on the positives. Harbaugh gives Jake multiple options at the LOS and he seems to get us into the right plays. Even in the face of bad events in big games, Jake is a good leader who stays positive and rallies the troops. Jake is also savvy enough to use his legs a few times a game to move the chains in important spots. What are some of your positives regarding our starting QB?

I partially agree with you. I would like to see more. I'm on board with Harbaugh that "satisfied" is not part of the vocab. Rudock could do a lot better.

I guess where the jury is out is how much he will improve from this point forward. My point is that I think he could still be Iowa 2014 Rudock. So I'm not satisified or content with where Rudock is now, but I fully believe he has the capability and the ceiling to improve lots in the remainder of the season.

If Butch Davis thinks we'd be 0-5 with any of the backups, then I question whether or not he's watched the games.

The defense and run game would have willed us to at least two victories.

I'm sure Rudock is deserving to start b/c Harbaugh is the head coach. He wouldn't put the 2nd best guy out there willingly. Harbaugh's offense is complex. Rudock is certainly an extremely smart kid. Perhaps his mental grasp of the offense is that much better than anyone else's in spite of only being in it for a couple months.

Not to slam the kid.... he has done a serviceable job, but I also think he's risk averse and generally inaccurate. Thankfully, this offense is being tailored to his strengths.

Next year's QB will be a major upgrade IMO. Harbaugh's too good of a coach for him not to be.

One thing I will say I have been really impressed with is his pocket presence. He seems to know where pressure is coming from within the pocket and is able to buy more time. There has been a couple times where maybe he's relied on this a little too much and taken an unnecessary sack, but if that one sack buys you a few first downs from extending a play, I'll take it.

As great as the past four games have been this is stll a team in transition. This is a team that could lose 3-4 more games this season.

Jake Rudock is a bandaid. He is a guy to get UM to next year when O'Korn more than likely takes the helm.

Some fans failed to consider the change Rudock was making offensively coming from Iowa to Michigan. Expecting him to come in and be the same player he was at Iowa (having been in that system for 4 years) at UM (after a few months) is/was unrealistic.

Rudock is one D huh ...damn I have been spelling it wrong the whole time. Thought it was double D ...

He's one bad game, with a brand new team, away from looking like Brian Griese.  Sure Tom Brady is awesome, but Griese ended the 50 yr NC drought.  The 97 O was not dominating, the D was.   I like our chances with Jake, we know he can't possibly be getting better coaching and he, like everyone else, will keep improving.

In 1997, Griese threw for 2293 Yards, had a 63% completion percentage, and threw only 6 picks the entire season.  If we were getting a performance like that from Rudock, I doubt we'd be having this discussion.

Just my take, but I think what Butch meant was that there is a gigantic gap between Rudock and the backups. He wasn't making the point that we would literally have lost em all, but more trying to illustrate the gap between our options for the position.

Tired of hearing fans question Harbaugh's decision. He is arguably the best coach in all of football, college or pro, and he specializes at the QB position. He knows how to evaluate talent, you are an internet troll. Rudock is the best, and it's not close according to Harbaugh. Stop.

after the BYU game. His parents happened to tailgate with us by luck. Jake is a classy guy and I enjoyed speaking with him and his family. We are blessed to have him, and later, he will go to Med school and become a fine pediatrician. I for one am thankful.

if Harbaugh says that he is our best option, then I believe him. He has generally come through for us and we are lucky to have him. We are going to need him to start hitting the downfield stuff, and I'm hoping both for his sake and for our championship aspirations, he will deliver.

He's done a fine job as you have said and continues to grow as the season progresses.  His experience has shown through in his decision making.  Hopefully, he will get the timing down on the deep throws, stretch the field a bit, and we will start putting up big points earlier and often.

Jake seems like a good kid and I support him. However, a 5th year senior QB should be able to hit wide open 20 yard post routes on a consistent basis. I don't care how many offenses you play in. Now him not always going through his reads is a result of the new offense, but he has really improved on that.

I went back and watched highlights of the previous games and I noticed a number of things about Rudock weren't apparent before.

We have a pretty good kid here and he is improving.  He also has some on field leadership abilities that don't seem to be fully appreciated.

My personal feelings are that in adverse tough games like NW & MSU Jake will step up his game and he will impress.

He's a leader and makes good decisions both on instinct but also because he's smart.
