Iowa QB Jake Rudock graduate transferring to Michigan?
There are rumors flying all over twitter about it this morning and a couple trusted posters on scout have said that they heard from solid sources that he informed Iowa that he will be coming here for his RS senior season. This would obviously be a major shake-up to the most important position on our depth chart.

I'm an atheist, but I would never say that a theist's opinion doesn't deserve to be respected. Who are you to judge what's "a legitimate political opinion" or not? Leave the politics off the board - both Deace's and yours.
February 24th, 2015 at 1:09 PM ^
There's no politics here. I'm pointing out that this guy is a known nutcase. The fact that his crazy article is aimed at the president and not at lebron james doesn't make this a political debate.
February 24th, 2015 at 1:19 PM ^
No politics thing aside, Auerbach didn't say Deace's opinion has no legitimacy because Deace is a theist (as you interpreted) but because Deace wrote factually incorrect borderline libel articles with very little grounds in reality.
You can argue that Deace could still have sports inside sources fairly enough, but the argument of "anyone who writes something that nonsensical probably isn't trustworthy altogether in ohter subjects" has merit too.

Questioning our President's religious affiliation (ie thinking he's a secret Muslim, not natural citizen etc etc) is not politics.
It's crazy and offensive bordering on propaganda and racism. That isn't disagreeing on policy... are you serious?
This is way beyond policy, and it should affect this dude's credibility.
That being said, I would like to see Sam's input on Rudock.
February 24th, 2015 at 12:49 PM ^
Kind of like a political campaign suggesting that a 2012 presidential candidate is to blame for a woman's death from cancer. It's crazy and offensive and bordering on propaganda.
Or kind of like the mainstream media suggesting that someone who didn't graduate college is -- by definition -- not qualified to be president of the United States in 2016. Crazy, offensive, elitest, and bordering on propaganda.
February 24th, 2015 at 12:55 PM ^
Are you expecting me to yell at you saying that you're wrong? That is also offensive and out of the realm of politics. (The ad)
Nothing you said changes what I said, so your party-baiting is off base and stupid.
Your college example is also debunked by history in which there are both Presidents who did and did not go to college.
So again why are you trying to bait me? Sorry I like to get my information on things from people not in league with the Curt Schillings and Olbermanns of the world.
February 24th, 2015 at 12:56 PM ^
How is it debunked? My point was not that there have never been non-graduate presidents --there have been plenty -- it's that there are people today (as in, like, the last week) who argue that not having a college degree should disqualify you from the highest office. Which is offensive and elitist and absurd.
February 24th, 2015 at 12:59 PM ^
Right and I'm saying you're right (history says otherwise to those people) I was mid-edit when you responded changing my wording so my apologies for that sounding wrong.
Where's the disagreement? You're trying to bait me into disagreeing with you when both of us are agreeing on what is out of line....
February 24th, 2015 at 1:01 PM ^
I wasn't trying to disagree with you. I was simply providing other examples!

Ah k. Truce. Internet tone is hard to decipher.
Here's an upvote.

I'd say that while these things may be offensive, they absolutely are disagreeing on policy and, therefore, arer in the (often distasteful) realm of politics. And therefore shouldn't be included here.

I don't think people are vouching for his character or the quality of his political analysis. That really isn't what matters here. The issue is whether he, a prominent media personality in Iowa, has sources on Rudock. It's not implausible that he might,
February 24th, 2015 at 1:03 PM ^
This discussion right here is why Brian bans politics and religion.
Any comment one makes on either of them is (Fill in: flammable, crazy, wrong, evil, etc.) in the eyes of someone else. Theses people often have a hard time not insulting said person or their intelligence.
On this Iowa guy: I have never heard of him before today and I am not close to believing what it appears he believes religiously (and how it affects politics). However, this comment does not make him any less likely or more likely to be correct on a sports issue.
I do not know if he is right or wrong. I am merely arguing that if he is wrong on this, it is not because of his religious/political views.
February 24th, 2015 at 1:21 PM ^
I didn't bring up politics or religion. I pointed out that the person making the Rudock claim is a known nutjob and that he wrote an article today based on a demonstrably false premise. The fact that he's chosing, in this particular instance, to use his reptile brain to attack a politician and not an entertainer or an athlete doesn't make this a political debate.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:47 AM ^
I would welcome him if this comes to pass (pun intended). He is exactly the game manager type we need on an otherwise (exl WR) now veteran offense. Doesn't have the greatest arm but again - this would be our Trent Dilfer type for a year. He really cut down on INTs last year which for winning football teams is impportant (turnover margin). A typical Rudock game would be 14-23 for 210 yards, 1 TD 0 INT which for a run based offense like Harbaugh runs is fine as a 1 year plug and play QB.
February 24th, 2015 at 12:48 PM ^
This is the way I look at it too. It will be important to get as many Ws on the board as possible in 2015 to keep the recruiting momentum going, and QB is our most unstable position on the team. If Rudock comes here, he will be gone in one year, so it doesn't take away any available schollies for 2016.
Maybe Shane or someone else beats him out, which would be great, as it would tell us that Harbaugh thinks we have a better option on our roster than Iowa's starter last year. I think we would win quite a few games with Rudock or a QB better than him.

That's pretty interesting - Rudock would probably have been the starter and then O'Korn right after him . Aquinas is a football factory, the most NFL players (10) from any HS in America - next up are a few schools with 5. Entire states dont have as many NFL players as that one HS. That's where Damon Arnette is from - very important for Michigan to start having a presence there; it's become Urban Meyer's playground.

I'm sure having Cris Carter as an assistant coach there doesn't hurt things for Ohio State. Wonder if the head coach resigning this year will have any effect.

There's new info out this morning that speaks far to the contrary.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:49 AM ^
Where are you seeing the info?
February 24th, 2015 at 10:48 AM ^
I posted this about a week ago, but I have not seen any official confirmation. There are many threads on the Iowa Rivals boards and a topic on Ozone saying that it is happening. He would be an upgrade in my opinion and it's only a one year stop gap measure. So, why not take him?
February 24th, 2015 at 10:55 AM ^
My lord. This was commented on several times in the other threads, but bears repeating: from Morris, Speight, and Malzone, to Morris, Speight, Malzone, Gentry, O'korn, and Rudock. Assuming Bellomy would have transferred under either scenario.
That's competition not only in actual practice, but who's going to set up the off-season summer work-outs, and who's going to show up and work in them.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:07 AM ^
JH has seen the film and he is not convinced he has the player he needs to lead them to victory. This QB competition will be very interesting!
February 24th, 2015 at 11:41 AM ^
a good thing.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:54 AM ^
We will find out shortly. JH seems like a no non-sense guy. You either perform and work hard or you sit.

no more.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:19 AM ^
Looks like Gentry and Malzone could redshirt if they are not going to be needed. This sets up the future really nicely.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:12 AM ^
Looks like he was benched vs TN in their bowl game - only passed 8 times. So it would seem a lot like the Golson situation at Notre Dame where a younger guy is pushing him out, albeit Rudock was only 1 game whereas Golson was a few games.

Beathard was the backup that threatened to transfer if he didn't get to play in the bowl game. I believe he is Bobby Beathard's grandson. http://qctimes.com/sports/football/college/big-10/iowa/rudock-beathard-to-play-in-hawks-bowl-game-against-tennessee/article_efd8fa54-8f95-11e4-b42a-b33025ac7764.html

How much of a step down is Rudock from Kevin Hogan? Not that we were ever for sure getting Hogan, but it sounds like a similar situation
February 24th, 2015 at 11:04 AM ^
He is a moderate step down but not a quantum one. Hogan is a fringe NFL draft choice (5th - 7th round), Rudock wouldn't be. Both play in run based conservative offenses and are multiple year starters. Hogan has a higher completion % and a higher average per throw. I havent seen too many Iowa games but Rudock doesnt have the arm to "make all the throws" like Shane does but he is generally accurate within the scope of throws he is asked to make. Again, more of a game manager type which is fine for this year - we just need a bridge to next year when there will a lot more serious competition.
The better question is how much of a step up is it vs a guy who has shown little and a guy who has never played or a guy who was playing HS 3 months ago which are the 3 alternatives.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:20 AM ^
Hogan had some mobility IIRC, not speedy but could at least fall forward a few yards past the LOS. Is Rudock similar in that way or is he strickly a pocket passer statue type?
February 24th, 2015 at 11:40 AM ^
He is not a complete statue but I woudnt call him mobile. Probably similar to Hogan in that regard.
February 24th, 2015 at 10:59 AM ^
...but Hogan is the better of the two, IMO
February 24th, 2015 at 10:51 AM ^
I believe in Harbaugh's emphasis on competition and the meritocracy, but does the fact that he is still (allegedly) seeking grad transfers imply anything about his confidence (or lack thereof) in finding a starter in Morris, Speight or Malzone?
February 24th, 2015 at 11:06 AM ^
February 24th, 2015 at 11:50 AM ^
Unless Morris has Jordan Morgan-like eligibility, I don't think having older guys around is going to make much of a difference...
EDIT: this was in response to different post.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:15 AM ^
The combined starts between those 3 players is 2 games.
Rudock has 24ish.
It says it is very helpful to go into a football season with a QB who has actually played football at this level and had success.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:23 AM ^
To me, it only implies that Harbaugh gets that especially at the QB position, it is critical to have someone with game experience who can manage the offense, especially during a transition year. Perhaps Harbaugh believes that Shane has a ton of potential, but given his crap QB coaching (and his mono-lost senior year of HS), he really needs a solid year of quality coaching to become he great QB that he has the potential to become. Since Shane has never take a RS, perhaps he wants to RS him this season? As for Speight, the guy is still really young (and Malzone is younger), so bringing in a guy who will be here for one season doesn't imply anything about either of them.
This coming season is going to be a transition year, but if we have the right QB - a game manager who doesn't turn it over and who can move the chains - our experienced and talented OL (feels odd to say that) and our talented RB group should be able to keep our offense decent to above average. If, however, we are breaking in a first-year starting QB, we could be in for some tough times this season.
February 24th, 2015 at 11:26 AM ^
I think everyone needs to judge that on their own, but I read quite a bit into it. Not with Malzone, he wasn't even on camps yet, how could you know. I think it was as simple as Speight is a RS (unknown), Malzone is an unknown, Morris struggled.
If they're adding Rudock to O'korn, plus Gentry... yeah that says something. And the clear priority and urgency put on this by the staff is something else.
