Intense ending to last night's Houston vs Tulane game
Since there was no game thread for last night's game (and what kind of real college football fan doesn't stay up late on a Thursday night to watch a 1-2 AAC team take on a 2-1 AAC team??), here is a link to how it finished:

Was going to put some kind of spoiler alert in, but everything is right there in the link text. Oh well - college football is still fun.

Tinyurl.com is a nice tool for these sorts of situations.
Cheers.

That game winning TD looked a bit like Gallon's pinball TD against ND in UTL II.

I don't respect that. A kneel down play is basically an honor play signaling you aren't going to actually make a play to progress the ball. There are safety concerns...
Now everyone will hit hard at that play.

Freddy P Soft has been sitting on your shoulder for a little too long...

I tend to agree. Similar to a fair catch.

Whoops

Michigan had that happen to them years ago. Going to just kneel on the ball and a defender dove at our lineman’s knee causing a minor injury. People spoke about that being a cheap shot by the defender.

You're getting down voted, but I remember when Schiano was coaching the Buccaneers and had his team blitz and hit on a victory formation, and people lost their minds because "you're not supposed to do that". So your point is actually pretty valid.

I was going to mention this play. I do get the whole 'it's a safety thing with an unwritten rule', but it's fair and legal. Kudos to Tulane for a unique play design and good execution to get the win.
And now Tulane should be f-in hammered on every single down because teams need to watch for a fake.
September 20th, 2019 at 7:54 AM ^
I agree about your knee down view. Tulane should get blitzed forever from now on if they to take a knee.
September 20th, 2019 at 7:57 AM ^
I agree that there are safety concerns and its an honored football play that signals that you are just running time out, but you have to admit the beauty of that play. Not only did it work but the RB and QB pulled it off beautifully with that handoff. It was difficult to even see that it happened.
September 20th, 2019 at 8:24 AM ^
I would also point out that there are ways to defend against the fake which don’t involve ‘hammering’ the faking players
September 20th, 2019 at 9:01 AM ^
You probably believe in free and fair elections too!
September 20th, 2019 at 10:52 AM ^
It’s not that I don’t respect it, because the “honor play” is only when you are winning. With a tie game, anything goes IMO.
it’s more that this is intentionally deceptive, which is a penalty. Harbaugh was flagged for a much less egregious play.
September 20th, 2019 at 6:42 AM ^
The fake kneel was awesome. Low risk, high upside play. Love it when coaches get creative with this stuff!!!
September 20th, 2019 at 7:10 AM ^
And from the angle that was shown, it was the best fake I’ve ever seen. I can’t see how that guy ends up with the ball.
September 20th, 2019 at 7:26 AM ^
You can see it on the replay angle. He stays completely still while the QB stuffs it in his gut as he goes by. Good stuff.
September 20th, 2019 at 7:54 AM ^
Fuck. If only Harbaugh called that on 3rd down before that debacle vs MSU in 2015. Rudock had the speed!
September 20th, 2019 at 8:16 AM ^
I can understand both sides to this.
I will say, though, most kneel downs are victory formations. There are VERY few situations where this would be applicable. If you’re on defense and it’s a tie game, be aware and attack regardless of what they’re doing. This is not a bush league move like some are claiming. It’s only bush league if you’re already ahead and you’re doing it just to run up the score.

I don't understand the bellyaching that many are doing here. It's a tie game! With plenty of time left! If you force a fumble, you can scoop and score for the win (a la that goddamn game vs Sparty). The time for "sportmanship" and "honoring the game" is when the winning team is kneeling it out with a 2+ score lead and less than 10 seconds left. When you could score a touchdown and still lose, that's the time to let it be and let them kneel. Houston was utterly stupid by playing lax and letting Tulane pull off a miracle.
Credit to Tulane's coaches and especially the running back who must have felt like those kids in Jurrassic Park in the kitchen with the raptors. He had to stay perfectly still with the ball in his gut while the defense was frantically running around. Guts of steel.

I can't concentrate on the play because the Green Wave's uniforms are blue.
September 20th, 2019 at 8:28 AM ^
When I first turned on the game I wasn't certain if I had the right one - thought it might have been a replay of a UNC game.
Powder blue is a strange look for Tulane, but hard to argue with the result.
September 20th, 2019 at 8:39 AM ^
Right? I turned it on and thought they must be in white. But Houston's color is red. WTF??? Took me a bit to figure it out, but I still haven't figured it out...
September 20th, 2019 at 9:15 AM ^
Apparently, they were originally known as "The Olive and Blue" and "Tulane Blue" is one of the two official school colors. Their fight song is also called "The Olive and the Blue." They became known as the Green Wave in 1920 or so.
So it's historical and (very) retro.

I pointed out the Tulane unis to my artist wife and she says the color is Periwinkle.

Play to the whistle.

Just wait til next week when the power blue wave plays army...then we will see what they are made of.
September 20th, 2019 at 8:48 AM ^
I can't wait for us to do this next week against Rutgers and get flagged for "intent to deceive".
September 20th, 2019 at 9:38 AM ^
Oh, yes. Who could forget?
September 20th, 2019 at 11:54 AM ^
Ref: "Unsportsman like conduct... intent to play a game and win, and have fun doing it."
One of the biggest BS calls I've ever seen.
September 20th, 2019 at 9:21 AM ^
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Tulane needs to be in the playoff discussion.
Oh, wait. That was Temple. Disregard.

GREAT GAME!
Fun to watch two scrappy little teams slug it out...beyond UM football, this is really why I watch the sport.
If you missed it, might be worth checking youtube for the full game!
