If you're Notre Dame's Athletic Director...

I'm not even going to ask the question of whether you fire him or not (the obvious answer is yes), because i'm guessing that no one on this board knows what its like to write an 18 million dollar severance check. So, assuming he is fired, who would you hire to replace him? #1) Brian Kelly - he's an incredible coach. that's not debatable. but he missed out here and at msu bc he's alleged to have such a bad personality. its also possible that he bails after a couple of seasons to go to the nfl. can the domers afford to take another chance like this? #2) Bob Stoops - he's proven. he's not going to leave. he's not going to go 6-6. notre dames been through three bad coaches in a row now. someone as consistent as stopps might be too hard to pass on. #3) Jim Harbaugh - he's a very exciting coach, but he's not as proven as stoops. he might be the best recruiter of the bunch. but has he proven enough as a coach!? can notre dame afford to take another chance? #4) Kirk Ferentz - he's a lot like stoops in the sense that he's consistent. but he's a little less sexy in every way. he would be cheaper, however. #5) Jon Gruden - i thought he was going to be higher on the list, but he appears to be happy as an analyst...or he's waiting for another nfl offer. strange. #6) Gary Patterson - can he win in a real league? risky. #7) Chris Peterson - can he win in a real league? risky.

In regards to Harbaugh...if you mention Kelly as having a bad personality, the same goes for Harbaugh as well. Folks in the PAC-10 (the administration that is) apparently despise him. Not that being a complete and total dickhead has stopped Notre Dame before.

true. he had better get out of the pac10 before usc gets another shot at him after that two point conversion crap. ...on a side note, i'm sick of people comparing that event to woody saying "because i couldnt go for three." what they forget is that osu's place kicker was roughed and hurt on the previous extra point. they didn't have a backup. when they asked woody, he was pissed (about michigan roughing his kicker when they were down 40 some points), so he gave the reporter a typical woody answer. and did u hear about him demanding that the athletic department build him a personal bathroom and shower (spending how many thousands of dollars in the middle of the recession) when there was another one like 20 feet down the hall? lol.

"and did u hear about him demanding that the athletic department build him a personal bathroom and shower (spending how many thousands of dollars in the middle of the recession) when there was another one like 20 feet down the hall? lol." I believe that was posted earlier this year and turned into a MGoFlameWar about Stanford's AD budget and whether it was an appropriate action. Ah for the days when that was what was being fought over.

To be honest, I think Jimmy Harbaugh might be their best option. The recruiting restrictions he'll face at ND will probably be lax compared to the ones he's currently facing in Stanford. Neither of Stoops, Meyer, or Kelly have had to deal with that.. plus Kelly is a little too political for ND. Given Harbaugh's obvious focus on academics(lol..) I think it'll be hard for ND to pass that up. Another plus is that they'll be able to get him on the cheap. lol.. Saban is catholic.. maybe ND waves a big wad of cash and compels him to move up there. Saban wouldn't scare me much as we've faced him before when he coached MSU and his recruiting at Alabama won't fly in ND. He's probably a long long shot though..

I think you try to get Bob Stoops, if you can pry him away from OK. (As money ever been an issue for ND?) If that doesn't go, i think you have to had to Brian Kelly. The guy wins games and if he does bolt to the NFL after a couple of seasons, it means he did a good job there and it will at least get ND on the right track.

are you referring when you say Patterson and Petersen couldn't win? Notre Dame has some consistency in its schedule but as an Independent, it varies year to year and does not play for a league title. I think they would both be upgrades. If and when Weis leaves, I think the search will yield surprising results. I don't think it will be any of the most rumored candidates.

The first person I contact is Urban Meyer. And I make him say yes or no before I think of contacting anyone else. Then, my short list includes Chris Peterson because I think he is the most talented coach available after Meyer, and Kirk Ferentz because he would be solid and never, ever embarass the program. Kelly had unresolved issues at CMU. Most schools will take a chance, but ND might not. Hiring a lout like Weis, whose mouth is only exceeded in size by his girth, and watching him fail might cause ND to go very conservative while hiring their next coach. Stoopes would be extremely frustrated at the limitations the ND academic standards would place on his recruiting. As a UM fan, I hope they hire Gruden, though. The transition from Chuck to Chucky would be a natural. And the results would be similar. Jimmah would definitely leave because of Gruden's record of causing QB's to regress. And Gruden would continue to go through QB's like Weis goes through a buffet line.

why would stoops leave OU? and Kirk Ferentz has never embarrassed Iowa? His son was living in subsidized housing as I recall. there have been as many legal issues at Iowa as anywhere else. his program isn't a shinning example Dominique Douglas and Anthony Bowman -- credit card fraud Cedric Everson and Abe Satterfield -- sexual assault Arvell Nelson and James Cleveland -- felony drug arrests

Even outside of his statement, I don't understand why Urban Meyer would want to go to ND at this point. Yes, it may have been his dream job at some point, but seriously, a 55-9 record at Florida? There's no way he would give that up for a big question mark at Notre Dame.

Re. Meyer's hypothetical lack of reasons to go to ND, I can think of several. - $$$ - If there was a time for him to leave Florida, this would be it. Sans Tebow next year they are not MNC contenders. - Meyer at ND would be a dynasty. He's a proven winner. ND is a traditional power that is down. PR/advertising/promotions - and yes, recruiting is this sort of activity - is all about telling a compelling story. If you're a 5 star recruit and Urban Meyer steps into your living room - Urban Meyer, proven winner, multiple national champion - and says, "Come to Notre Dame and help me restore the glory, play on national TV every week, etc." that's going to appeal to a hell of a lot of top kids. Going to ND and turning things around is a surefire way for Meyer to grow his legend that much more. In other words, going to ND would give Meyer and abundance of 2 things that big-time coaches seek - inflated salary and inflated ego. I would not be surprised at all to see Meyer coaching ND next year. I think they go all out to get Meyer. Yeah he made that statement, but, he's in the home stretch of the season trying to win his 3d MNC in 4 years at Florida. Honestly, what do you expect him to say? Frankly, he would be cheating his kids at Florida to say any different, regardless of the veracity of his statement. Re. Stoops - Call me crazy but I think he's overrated. With the talent he has he should be getting it done much more consistently in the big games. Look at his record in BCS bowls. It's like 1-5 or something like that. Oklahoma always chokes on the big stage... this is byond an isolated occurence, it's a trend. Is he a very good coach? Yes. But he doesn't match up to the likes of Carrol and Meyer. Hell, I think you could make a case for RR and maybe Kelly being on Stoops' level. If neither of those 2 pan out, I think they look at Kelly and Ferentz in that order. Despite the fact that neither are angels once you get past the shiny veneer, I don't think it matters b/c your average fan doesn't know the things about them that have been brought up on this board, and perception is reality. And finally, if Ferentz ends up being ND's coach, I will cackle with knowing glee.

how you would rate Notre Dame's typical schedule. When you say "real league" does that mean Big 10 difficult? Big 12 difficult? It's difficult to be precise since it changes. I'm trying to find strength of schedule stats but can't find a good site.

I hire an inexperienced football coach from a small high school in Wyoming where they play 8-man football. I give him, or preferably her, a deal worth 1.5x Weis' contract. I then sit back in my super expensive chair, pull back on my block M hat, tap fingers, say "exxxxxxxxxxcellent!"

Ferentz is currently one of the highest-paid coaches in the country at $3 million a year. Also, he's in a nice, relatively low-pressure situation at Iowa. I'll never say never, but I'd be surprised if they offered and even more surprised if he took it.

"Can he win in a real league?" is an ignorant question. If a guy can win where he's at, he's winning with resources comparable to his competition. If said guy goes to ND, he's not competing with inferior resources. So, if a guy like Patterson can win at TCU against teams like Utah and BYU, why couldn't he win at ND against Big Ten teams? I would be very nervous if they get Patterson. In fact, if Rodriguez doesn't work out, I would love to have him. TCU runs spread and has a wicked D. Of course, I was elated to get Rich and am still 100% on board with him. So, if I was ND's AD, I would go after Patterson.

It’s tough to be a sloth "Leaves, their main food source, provide very little energy or nutrition and do not digest easily. Sloths therefore have very large, specialized, slow-acting stomachs with multiple compartments in which symbiotic bacteria break down the tough leaves. As much as two-thirds of a well-fed sloth's body-weight consists of the contents of its stomach, and the digestive process can take a month or more to complete." So, at 10 hamburgers a day, Charlie Weis could eat 300-450 burgers while losing 4-6 games during the time that a sloth is just digesting one meal of leaves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloth

If they pick one of those candidates, IT BETTER TAKE THEM 2 F'ING YEARS OF LOSING AND WANDERING IN THE WILDERNESS TO PUT IN THE NEW SYSTEM. Right? Isn't that what we've been told? That's just the way it is, right? (Please say yes.)

This just in.............Tyrone Willingham to be named Notre Dame's next head coach. Charlie Weiss has locked himself in his limo and has begun to eat himself to death.

Meyer can always use the interest ND has in him to work out a nice pay raise to stay at Florida. Weiss' problem was he peaked too early having the one BCS bowl season! There big problem was a weak defense and lack of running game. OL look pretty big but at times looked slow. How I hope our defense really improves over the next two season.

I think they should back up the Brinks truck for... Jim Tressel. Beyond the obvious qualifications (including that the punk beats Michigan every year), there are still tons of their fans who still think he can't win the big one and wins in too boring a fashion. If OSU and ND got into a bidding war for his services, I think ND could win it, and Tressel could be up for a move.
