Well, that wouldn't make any sense because that's how Beilein has always run his system.  It wouldn't be very effective to play 2 big men at the same time.  I mean hell, that's what a lot of people get on Hoke for, trying to fit a square peg in a round hole when they tried to make Denard and Devin pocket passers.

No way he'd do anything but  the same way all the time because "it's hist system."

I'm going to trust that Beilein knows a bit more than you do -- whether it be that he'll need another big due to attrition, that Davis is about to get offers from top programs and was getting him first, or in fact just thinks he'll be a good player for Michigan regardless of what Tom Izzo thinks.  He's clearly done a great job of identifying and developing talent.  There's really little to question given his track record.

The track record of taking us to 2 Sweet 16's in 8 years?  We tried the 2 big system in 2013-2014 and it didn't go too well, to no one's surprise (and that was with McGary, who is vastly superior to any big man that is or will be on our roster in the near future).  So I'm not sure why he'd switch back to a 2 big system, or why this Davis kid would be the reason he'd switch.  So if you know more than I do, then please enlighten me.  I'm looking for reasons beyond just "trust Beilein".

Nobody is attacking the kid's talent or claiming to be a scout here. We are simply questioning why we would take ANOTHER big when we already have Doyle, Wilson, Teske, Donnal, Wagner, and now Austin. It makes no sense going forward with the lack of ballhandlers that will be on the roster in 2 years.

Thank gawd we could steal him from eastern & toledo. Belien recruits way too many projects, sometimes i think he forgets he has access to the best academics & athletic facilities in the country. Im not lookin for Duke or Sparty recruiting but cmon these last two classes are head scratchers. I hope im wrong, this kid is obv gonna redshirt right?

talent but can't seem land 'em. I don't know why that is...he's got a couple of relatively young assistants who should be connecting. He doesn't seem to ride his players like Izzo does. Is he seen as a system guy? Do the G and Wing prospects see him as too confining?

I think so.  They see him in a Bo Ryan-esque light.

But Bo Ryan has to be that way to succeed in Wisconsin.  Beilein does not have to at a place like Michigan.  He's doing this by choice.  Cross your fingers.

That thread is an embarassment.    As someone who enjoys that forum, its sad that it has been overrun by a bunch of crybabies.

If there are any masochists out there, Davis' high school has multiple full games posted on youtube from this past season's playoffs. Search "Onsted Wildcats".

Hard to believe that without attrition we now have ZERO open scholarships for the 2016 class and only 2 guys who can dribble (Walton, MAAR). Best of luck and congrats to Austin, but the criticisms and confusion on here are very reasonable.

So here's a crazy thought who hear would have preferred Chatman over MAAR or Dawkins or Doyle..... Didn't think so.
Not hating on chatman he may end up being a first round draft pick for all I know but last time I checked we were making ncaa tourneys in 08, 10, and a big ten championship in 2012 with how many top 100 recruits??

As much as I want to make final fours every year it's just not a reality at Michigan. They have never been able to do this even before the scandal. Fischer had 2 final fours in 10 years and I don't think anyone wanted him fired at least not before the Ed Martin scandal. I love John Beilein but the reality is competing for a big ten championship every couple years and making a final four once every 5 years may be our ceiling

There were a lot of top 100 recruits.  Manny Harris was a consensu 4 star, so was Deshawn Sims, Darius Morris was top 100, Mitch McGary, GRIII, and Stuaskas were all top 100.  Trey Burke was top 100 to espn, top 150 to Rivals. Tim Hardaway was a top 100 player.  I'm sure I'm missing others.  Smotrcyz was, I think Horford might have been but not sure.

Also sure MAAR and Dawkins were better this year than Chatman, but they were not better than Devin Booker and James Blackmon jr who Beilein wanted.  Or De'angelo Russel or Melo Trimble or any other number of freshman players this year.  Langford, Winston and Battle could be those level guys.  This guy will probably be worse as a freshman than Doyle, which isn't a bad thing but isn't making the team a national title contender.

The only thing that confuses me about this guy is that I don't think we need another big man. That gives us 5 guys who can only play the 5 position in Beileins system. Unless he wants to play a real PF and C I can't see how this would work. We need guards especially PG. Either way Beilein knows what he's doing!!

And this film looks like a player that warrants the offers he has (MAC) and the coaches that are watching him. But I still stand by most of my assessment from above. Still seems like a stretch at this point, but at least it isn't nearly as much of one that it initially looked like.

It makes no sense to take this recruit now.  Seems like Beilein knows he isn't getting any of the highly rated guys which is really dissapointing.  I know we all like MAAR and Dawkins but james blackmon jr and devin booker were both better.  Stars might not mean everything but they sure as hell tend to mean something.  Just because Beilein is good at spotting under the radar talent doesn't make that talent better than the elite talent.  Dissapointed to say the least.

Beilein wouldn't offer a 2016 guy because he is worried about grabbing a better guy at that point; we are talking about 2 recruiting periods away.  Sure, he might get a sense that certain targets are not likely to fall, but no way a coach throws in the towel and takes a flier on someone out if desperation 13 months away from when that player could commit.

I don't agree with all of Beilein's moves, but he seems to like something with Davis, and at this point I'd trust him a hell of a lot more than people on a message board who I'm guessing didn't know Austin Davis existed until this post went up.

Doyle. Big ten teams are regularly beating us on the boards. I think coach B is going with big lineups long term. Teske or Davis backup doyle. Wilson, Wagner and Robinson play the 4 position. Rahkman and Walton play the pg position in 2016. Irvin, Aubrey and chatman play the 2 and 3 spots with Wagner or Robinson filling in as needed. The elite hs wings and guards will probably hold out until a year from now to commit to a school. If or when irvin or walton decide to leave early, Beilein can grab a guard or wing at that time more easily than finding a big man late. I think beilein knows he needs more size to win big championships.

Beilein came out of 2013 thinking that he would possibly have Horford, McGary and Doyle to play the 5 last year. He ended up with only freshman Doyle and had to move over 2 guys he recruited as 4s (one was 6-7) to play the 5 and he said never again will I be caught short on big men. In 2016, we will have junior Doyle, sophomore Wilson, and freshmen Teske and Davis. If Davis red shirts, we will have a center in each class the following year. Donnal can return to the 4 that he was recruited for along with Wagner. We still need a PG in the 2016 class or get Williams this year and make him the PG of the future. It would seem that we would still need to have some attrition to make that fit by 2016. We have tons of guys that can play the 3 and 4 in 2016, but maybe only 2 or 3 that can play the 1 and 2. If nothing else, Beilein is sending a message not to sit on your Michigan offer if you think you might like to play here. Also, he wants guys who want to play here. Not guys who will come here if they can't find something better.
