Hello: Kingston Davis

Submitted by Moe on

Michgan just received a pledge from this 3 star RB from Alabama.  6'1" 225lb out of the class of 2016.

According to his high school coach, 2016 RB Kingston Davis (@_King_LD) has committed to Michigan.

Yeah, I can't figure his film out. He doesn't seem that fast (yet doesn't get caught in a lot of these highlights), and he doesn't make sudden cuts. But he doesn't seem to get tackled easy. Like he maybe has those subtle movements that throw defenders off. And he doesn't seek contact either, which is something I personally like to see (and something I didn't like about Green as much coming out of high school.

I don't really see the Derrick Green comparison, other than that they're both big backs. I think Green is faster but less sturdy, while Davis is like De'Veon Smith (but faster!).

Prattville is a pretty big school that plays against some good talent. We're also recruiting some kids who played against Prattville, who won a state championship this past season. It's not necessarily the best talent in the country, but if you can hack it with Prattville's schedule, you're in pretty good shape.

FWIW, the competition in Davis's highlights is better than that of either Smith/Green coming out of high school.

Yes for such a big man, it is strange how easily Green is brought to the ground.  Smith on the other hand usually takes 2-3 men, but it just isn't very far past the line of scrimmage if there is not a gaping hole due to the lack of quick burst from him.  Hopefully your Fred Jackson lite view is correct "like Deveon Smith but faster" as that is the one thing really holding Smith back - he does seem to have decent vision and obviously his balance is solid as hell.  If his second contact could be 3 yards up the field rather than at the LOS - that sort of back could do damage in a Harbaugh offense.

Now we need a change of pace back who is a friggin burner.

Keith Washington was an under the radar kinda guy too, whom Harbaugh took a look at late in the process, offered and then accepted his commitment. Harbaugh knows what he is doing and will take guys who want to play for him and want to compete for their spot each and every day.

has absolutely no bearing on the percentage of all 3 star recruits from the South who make it to the NFL compared to the percentage of all 4 star recruits from the state of Michigan who make it to the NFL.  The data in your link shows a percentage of the total state population who make it to the NFL, not a percentage of recruits from each state who make it to the NFL.  Here is a link that shows percentage of each star rating to be drafted.  While it does not breakdown between state or region, these percentages were calculated in a fashion that is relevant to this discussion.

that was a typo, i meant "will undoubtedly not", as there would be less percentage 3 stars in nfl since there are so many more 3 stars and your link proves that...all i'm saying is more guys from the south end up in the nfl and i think that's pretty cut and clear. thus, i prefer a slightly lower ranked guy from the south over one from michigan.

Awkwardness aside, Davis is a kid who looks the part of a big-time football player. He obviously either spends a lot of time in the weight room...or has some of Bo Jackson's genes where he's ripped without working out.

Just watched some film on him. Nice bruising recruit. Seems equally sound running laterally out of the option, or downhill from pistol or QB under center. He looks for his assigned gap, gets low, and makes the right decision. He keeps his legs moving on contact. First contact bounces off him. Just doesn't have top end speed. As Fred Jackson would say, "like Mike Hart, but with better fundamentals and vision".

It's always nice to have a handful of guys from the South for when other guys from the South come visit.  In two years when a kid from Mississippi or Louisiana comes up for an official, it's a lot better to have a couple Alabama kids for him to stay with and hang out with.  Better than a kid from Detroit telling them how great the north is.

Why are people so stuck on offer sheet. Derrick Green had a 5-star offer sheet but has not panned out yet. The current UM staff has a dedicated group of recruiting personnel that actually evaluate recruits instead of going off other team's or Scout/ Rivals/247 assessment. Kingston Davis is not a speed back but a bruising running back who will fit Harbaugh's scheme well and surprise a lot of people.

Do we have any clarity on the position Kingston is getting brought in as, RB or FB (or something else)? My understanding is that Reese, although currently a HS LB, is getting brought in as a FB.

My guess is RB as well.  Harbaugh has shown he likes having mondo RBs, and Shallman getting so many touches points to that.

That said, we are losing 2 FBs after this year, Kerridge and Houma, and those are the only FBs we have who are at all proven.  So it's possible Harbaugh wants to bring in two FBs this year to stock up that position a bit.

In response to the Midwest 4*/southern 3* debate... Shouldn't it be more of a harbaugh-evaluated 3*/scouting services 4* conversation. I don't think it's biased to say that I trust Harbaugh more than the guys at 247

I dont like that as a reason to be happy.  A lot of guys get a bump when they commit to the most popular schools.  That doesnt make them a better player.

If he gets a bump because he has a great senior year that's 1 thing - a bump because Michigan offered/committed - not so much.  I'd much rather have a dope 3 star who the recruiting services missed on that a guy who the services bumped up to a 4 so the fanbase can say "look - our average rank just got bumped up because they moved our 3 to a 4 - woo hoo".
