Hello: Duncan Robinson
As expected, Michigan will be the destination for the DIII transfer. Staskaus 2.0?
I am proud to announce that I'll be transferring to the University of Michigan. Proud to be a Wolverine! #GoBlue 〽️

3 threads!! in first.
I have the quick trigger.
3 threads woo!!!
The record (before mod cleanup) still stands....
Well Coach Hoke keeps talking about competition and depth. I guess that makes me third string.
I get Beilein's record with underrated prospects, but he sure is taking a lot of them lately.
Well, when all of your underrated players turn into NBA early entries, you've gotta back fill with "diamonds in the rough" so that your top 50 recruits have someone to play with.
Morris, Trey, THJr, GRIII and Nik were all top 100 level guys. Duncan Robinson is an unrated DIII transfer with few D1 schollarship offers.
You surely aren't suggesting that Spike will be in the NBA because these other guys were?
none of them were at the time Coach B offered and they committed, IIRC. But maybe he means there were that talented even if not ranked there ...
sweet jesus... /s
happy now?
And to respond directly, of course I don't expect Spike to be in the NBA, nice strawman leap there. That said, Spike has proven more effective than 100s of players ranked higher than he was over the last few years. Also, when I say an underrated guy ends up as an early entry, I'm mostly referring to Trey, Timmy, Nik, and Caris - who, based on their ratings at the time they committed (or overall) had no business being an NBA draft pick based on relative success of sub top 50 players.
Duncan Robinson is one of the best players in D-III basketball. He was arguably the best player on a team that played for the D-III National Championship as a freshman and an All-American in D-III last year. I would argue that the competition in Division III is better than most high school basketball especially considering what he accomplished as a freshman.
Emphasizing a point Brian made last year, is there any considerable difference between lightly recruited Spike Albrecht and McDonald's All American Tyler Lewis? Does their high school recruitment even matter anymore? I think the only data point that matters here for Robnson is his performance on the D-III level.
If the next 10 of them don't pan out, then he'll only be batting .300. In the meantime, he can take as many as he likes, as far as I'm concerned.
I guess I'd rather he take the underrated prospects than the overrated ones?
Well that's probably because you practice witchcraft.
it is great to develop underrated guys into solid contributors, but we still need a stud or two in every class to ballance the roster out. I realize we are in on a lot such guys in 2016, but until we land a few I will be a little concerned.
other than Beliein is God and Odoyle rules.
Look, no one is doubting Beleien's ability to find and develop lesser rated players, but no one, including you I imagine, wants a roster made up soley of guys like Spike, MAAR, Dawkins and Robinson.
Quit overreacting. All I said was that he's taking a lot of underrated prospects.
You said recently, as if to imply he's doing something different than he did 4-5 years ago.
If you're going to get defensive when people call you out for a post that seems to be raising an eyebrow at John Belein and his track record, good luck to you.
The only people "calling me out" are those incapable of distinguishing between a top-100 prospect and a Division III transfer, not unlike yourself.
I get it. He's a good DIII player. That doesn't make it unreasonable to express slight skepticism about the number of players Michigan is taking lately with virtually no other major offers.
He may have been the best returning player in DIII this year--as only a sophomore. As I posted above, what do offers in high school matter anymore? The data point we should be working off is his performance last year in Division III.
Yes, and his scholarship offers after that freshman season were Michigan and Davidson. I'm not saying he won't be a good player for us. He may be a great player for us. I'm just saying that it's fair to raise an eyebrow.
I love Coach Beilein (as my avatar suggests). But I can't help but be a little skeptical of some of the recent commits. It's always nice when a guy is universally recognized as a major talent even if, at the end of the day, I trust Coach Beilein's take on things more than anyone else's.
Robinson has only been recruited for the last month or so. His head coach at Williams left for Marist in the middle of June. He probably didn't put feelers out to transfer until July. It's quite possible more schools would have gotten involved if his recruitment was longer (remember Creighton called about him but he never even ended up visiting), and how do we know for certain more schools didn't call? Add in the fact the kid is high level student and may have been looking at only good academic schools, and you have a pretty unique recruitment that you can't compare easily to other transfer situations.
Cosigned. It's hard for me to do more than cock an eyebrow, given recent history, but it does seem like we should be landing more top level recruits at this point.
he's a not Top 100 recruit? No one in this thread.
Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and not question the guy who has a 3-year (and counting) banner raising streak.
My coworkers think I'm crazy thanks to this
Welcome to Michigan Duncan!
You don't have to sit if you go to a lower division, but you do if you go to a higher division.
He was comparing the kid to Klay Thompson this morning after having talked with some sort of scouting-type person about him. He also said that he thinks Robinson is a better prospect than Jalen Coleman or Eric Davis, both of whom he believed Michigan would be done with if Robinson committed.
Sam generally knows more about football, and he's not a scout, but I thought the above was interesting.
P.J. Dozier or bust then?
he said that Robinson was a better shooting prospect than Davis and Coleman. Which of course, is a good thing, but there will certainly be questions about Robinson's ability to play D, etc.
I just re-listened to it. He said Robinson is the best "shooting/scoring option" of the bunch. Thanks for the correction.
Welcome Duncan.
Well we did have a bunch of highly recruited guys like McGary, Robinson, and Irvin. However, I trust Beilein with this that Robinson will be able to excel at the D1 level from D3.
THE BABY OF?
