This is a bad look for FSU and another potential issue with playing football this year. Coaches and staff at some schools will not be as responsible as other schools in regards to Covid and testing

My *guess* is it's not going to be clear-cut, for anyone.

- Most programs will be fine: perhaps a case or three, but they'll play 10 games
- 1 or 2 teams per conference will be like the St. Louis Cardinals and have outbreaks, cause multiple games to be cancelled, and have players go to the ER (and hopefully that's as bad as it gets).

Some fans will point at the teams that made it through and say, "You see?!" ; others will point at the teams that didn't and say, "You see?!"

And then top recruits will continue to choose, for the most part, based upon who pays them the most, promises the most playing time, and has the clearest path to the NFL.

Agreed. Most people have basically calcified brains on this issue. They're not changing their minds.

Some have speculated that the cancellation of Big Ten football will hurt Trump in the Midwest. I don't really see that. If his devoted fans deserted him they'd effectively be letting the "libs" own them.

"If his devoted fans deserted him they'd effectively be letting the "libs" own them."

Dude, if anyone is still following Trump today that person will never, ever, for any reason whatsoever, change his blind fealty.  That train is gone, the doubling-down has been done several times over, and there is no sense in discussing the topic.  Trump could kill someone in Times Square, and such a person would applaud it, saying the victim deserved it.  And then that person would claim its all fake news and that the victim got himself killed in an attempt to keep Trump from exposing the pedophiles running government because mail-in voting is a fraud.  It's the #1 fraud with the best ratings - all the best people say so.

To reiterate: anyone still trumpeting Trump will never change.

There is so much we don’t know yet, but I think no matter what happens, it will help with some players and hurt with others.   Harbaugh seems to have positioned Michigan really well.   He had positioned himself as an advocate for player safety (and shown he can deliver) while also advocating for players to be able to play.

My head says that the big ten will actually fair pretty well out of all of this because other conferences are going to inevitably come to the same conclusion, just after much needless pain and suffering.   My heart would prefer to be wrong (even though that would clearly hurt Michigan) because it would be great if this could all magically go away and we could have good things like kids in school without fear, millions returning to work, dinners out, college football etc.

Maybe we can go back to a regional game. Let cheating pig fuckers play in whatever cesspool they want to in the south. Take pride in a conference championship again and be rewarded by playing another "good" conference out west in a fun but ultimately meaningless bowl game.

I miss those days but then again...get off my lawn.

I'm not surprised. If I were an FSU parent and I saw the head coach doing this on a day Florida set its state record for number of deaths, the warning klaxons would have been going off.

I understand at a state university, a head coach and athletic dept is required to suck up to politicians, but DeSantis has been pretty clear he's a "nah, we're good --- full speed ahead!" guy and that's not who I'd want my kid's program to be amplifying and relying on. I'd want people in lab coats and DrPH next to their name to be the ones leading any press conferences.

Lol, this is funny. Unwilling to recognize the reality right in front of you. It’s a simple and obvious observation of the press coverage. With all of the coverage around how horribly Trump has handled the virus response (It’s been endless) they haven’t had time to report on the white 5 yr child who was executed in his own front yard by a black man in North Carolina, or the historic peace deal just brokered between Israel and UAE, or the several mass shootings in recent weeks.

It’s not cynical or bias. It’s obvious and predictable.

Can’t wait to see this board explode on Nov 3.. Trump 2020 ??. If you don’t want your country looking like Chicago , San Fran or Minneapolis, please vote. All these people complaining ... yet they won’t show up to the ballot box. And you’re 1000% right ... 5 year old gets shot and killed. Don’t see a BLM protest against one of their or anyone really covering. It’s laughable

Yeah, lets ask the media to stop covering a pandemic that is raging fairly uncontrolled across the wealthiest country in the world with no end in sight and is causing 1,000+ deaths per day and causing sports to be cancelled and still does not result in much of a federal response because like enough already.

Once again with the deliberate misrepresentation  of my statement. It really is incredible sometimes. Read again. I said “to the point where that’s all there is”. This, of course, means that I didn’t say “stop covering...because enough already”. It means it’s excessive to the point where other, significant, National and world news is not being covered at all.

The guy has specifically held up another stimulus bill to avoid strengthening election security and viability.  So maybe he makes his own headlines?  I mean, after the debacle of the 2016 election interference from Russia, you'd think Trump - of all people - would want to ensure election security!

BTW, the Isreal-UAE deal is on Politico's front page, and has been since it broke last night.  You should actually pay attention to news sites that strive to avoid obvious bias.  So...  Stay the fuck away from both CNN and Fox!

I've had licensing deals with CNN and Fox News and pay attention to the news.  Not a shocker, but the bias on Fox News is so bad that I can't even watch it.  Their website isn't much better though they manage to have a lot of celebrity bikinis.   CNN's website is biased but largely covers the news, but I caught their actual channel for the first time in years the other night and it was crazy biased.  Don Lemon was trying to do an unfunny John Stewart impression and was just riffing jokes about Trump.  I had no idea they had fallen so far.   Was their coverage like that during the Obama years, or is it just a reaction to Trump's buffoonery?

When I watch news I've been opting for ABC.  There are plenty of good print sources.

The ONLY positive aspect of the last 3.5 years - and this is a stretch - is that all of the idiots in the country have raised their hands to be counted. We know who you are now.

If your take on a worldwide pandemic is that it only exists to influence US politics, don't be surprised when your future input toward any topic is ignored.

Not to say they aren’t out there, but exactly how many people do you think believe this? Surely there are some, but you make it sound like it’s some huge number.
Your statement Is an oversimplified, yet unsurprisingly dumb and deliberate misinterpretation of what many people see as a time where hate by the left for Trump is so blinding that they shape each and every story as a negative on him somehow, and that they are so busy doing this that there is virtually no other news being covered. There are other things going on in this country and world, a few of which i mentioned above. But you’d never know it.

And for all the talk about increased division in the country, how do you think your statement telling people “you idiots who like Trump.. you’ve been counted. You are now irrelevant “ goes over? The arrogance behind this is so thick, it’s difficult to fathom. Your ability to crown yourself the arbiter of truth and intelligence and sit upon the throne of intellectual superiority is truly mind boggling.

Is he wrong, though? If you voted for Trump, and still remain in favor of him after what you’ve seen the past 3 1/2 years, you deserve to be irrelevant.

It is flat out disingenuous, not to mention disturbing, to state that the virus is a political maneuver by certain parties as some ass backwards defense of Trump and his appalling handling of this issue, and that’s not his only failure in which this defense has been used. But in this case his failures cost US lives.

It’s always some bullshit, mental gymnastic, cop out to justify his severe failures.

Quite a lot. In the limited interactions that I've had since covid became a pandemic, I can off the top of my head think of at least five guys who have expressed exactly that sentiment. A couple of those guys are very "well educated", and successful people. I can't believe how dumb our country actually is, it's astonishing.

JBE

August 13th, 2020 at 1:05 PM ^

Exactly. The ignorant have shown their hand now. It’s good to know who they are.

The negative of that is the sobering evidence that the US has a long, long way to go in many cultural and cognitive/educational aspects.

I probably knew, but really didn’t want to believe that this country is such a cultural wasteland, especially compared to some other places. I mean, this is a blog that follows one of the top educational institutions in the country and there’s still all types of dumb on here.

1VaBlue1

It goes well beyond cultural issues.  Trump and his merry band of sycophantic sympathizers are literally destroying the Constitution.  To be fair, Trump is the carnival barker taking the spotlight off McConnell, Barr, and John Roberts.  Those three are just obliterating the rule of law and it's 200+ years of precedent.  And now - in Trump's own words - he is very publicly rigging the election against voting rights.

At this point, I will not be surprised to see the USPS just outright say it will not handle election material this year.  I will not be surprised to see the DoJ send 'peace keepers' to polling places (especially in Dem states).  I will be absolutely stunned to see McConnell bring to a vote any bill that includes funding for the USPS and/or election security in any form.

Gonna respectfully disagree.  Read the rulings - they are extremely narrow and filled with instruction in how to attack what’s left.  His presiding over the Impeachment was straight up legal buffoonery.  Under his reign, SCOTUS has been the most extremely biased toward big business, and against citizens, in history.  I’ll continue to have zero trust in him.

I bet Jimbo Fisher is putting his feet up on his big mahogany desk in College Station, lighting up a fat stogie, giggling to himself, watching the controversy continuing to unfold in Tallahassee and saying to himself “you miss me yet?”

I still can’t believe FSU ran that guy out of town after one bad year that was also riddled with injuries. One bad year. Three years removed from a national title, a Heisman winner, and only a couple years removed from an Orange Bowl win (sigh) and a playoff appearance. Not to mention a 27 game winning streak.

Hard to believe how far FSU has fallen since he left.

Perkis-Size Me

August 13th, 2020 at 12:14 PM ^

If the program was out of control when Fisher left, then what would you call the state of the program since then?

Regardless of what may or may not have been happening when he left, no one can argue that it was still in a far better place then compared to how it is now. So I think my original point still stands.

I think within a month or so, give or take, there will be nobody playing college football.

I hate it and I do not like the way Warren handled this situation for the B1G, but at the end of the day, safety for all players/coaches etc. is what is most important and you just can’t play football safely at this point.

There will continue to be tweets from other players in leagues that are playing and at some point enough will be enough and the season for every conference will be cancelled.
