Friday night drinking thread

Odell Loose Leaf and sporadic fireball shots for me.

On a personal note, I've been teaching in the mountain time zone for the last two years and put in my resignation today to pursue opportunities in Michigan. Cheers to all of you educators fighting on the frontlines of society.

It could be worse: you could be watching Frozen, Again! or those super annoying Disney Tinkerbell movies. Drink up dad, and while you're at it, Benadryl shots for all the kids! My dad and stepmother got my boys tonight, wife and I drinking G&Ts since it is spring!

I have 3 girls under the age of 8.  I'm pretty sure I've seen Frozen close to 50 times.  The soundtrack was in either my ears or brain for a solid 9 months.  I was Christoff for Halloween last year for god's sake.  But I have to admit, I would watch the movie 1,000 more times if my girls wanted me to.  The power of daughters over their dads is only second to the Power of Harbaugh.

Long day of work. I'm cleaning out anything in the fridge. The good stuff is what I'm drinking now. I'll get to the bud light by the end of the night.

Sounds like a nice place. I'm in Western Nebraska which is much more isolated from anything noteworthy other than high school sports. It's very hard to move to a new place and forge those relationships with colleagues and students. Good luck attacking your job search with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. I know I will.

Fighting on the front lines indeed, in Michigan where the CPL holders can open carry in schools. That's nuts. Good luck to you in your search. I have a feeling that just about any place on earth will be a big step up from western Nebraska.

Drank a pitcher of sangria at a Portuguese churrasqueria then came home and downed some Kelso Industrial ales. Tomorrow I have the pleasure of installing a new garage door. Fun times ahead.

Worked full time while getting doctorate at Berkeley.  9 hours a day (minimum) in lab 6 days a week, 5 days a week working full time 3rd shift (48 hours a week . . . gotta get the time and a half for 8 hours).Sleep?  Pssshhhhh.  3 hours a night . . . often went 2-3 days without sleep.  Then Sundays . . . sleep for 18 hours.

If this is true (and, to be honest, it's extremely difficult to believe that it is), why on earth would you ever do something like that to yourself?  Did you Ph.D. not allow you to TA to earn a stipend??

I did a Ph.D. also.  The hours were brutal, but no one was doing anything like this--he's claiming he did 19 hours a day Monday through Friday, and then another 9 on Saturday.  I mean, that's on the brink of physically impossible.  And I never knew anyone who worked an outside job while doing their Ph.D.  Everyone TA'd, which pays tuition and a stipend in almost every Ph.D. program I've ever heard of.

Two Hearted (my 2nd one, actually) after arriving home from East Lansing.  Drove thru heavy fog the last 40 miles or so, but with a snile on my face after watching us prevail at Munn.

Can't finish here without a big salute to State:  F Y S !!!

Don't want to discourage any one from moving to Michigan to teach, but MI is saturated with schools of Ed (they say the state exports more teachers than any other state in the union). Lots of competition for jobs. Step one is to jump on line and start the certification process now, so the ball is rolling in June and any tests are taken in July.

I missed the party here, mostly because of drinking, so there is that at least. I have since taken my normal power nap (my wife refuses to call my 6-ish hours of sleep actual sleep) and switched to coffee while I contemplate the day. I tried to look out my front window to get a view of the fog, but there's too much fog to see it right now.

Come to Maryland

Where the taxes are high, the population stagnant, homes expensive, but we have good schools (and good teachers).

Unfortunately, the Howard County system is pretty difficult to get a teaching job due to the high pay and benefits.
