Fragile mental state my a**

Submitted by CLord on

I read this gibberish about how the team is probably in a fragile mental state after the IU game, so here’s my two cents on the team’s mental state, given that of course Beilin and the team will read this and heed my every word.

Good weed and other drugs aside, it's perspective that defines mental state.  Watch the major leaguer trashing coolers and bats like an angry baby in the dugout after striking out because he can’t shift his perspective off of the short term setback, to remember that oh yeah, he makes $20 Million a year and more per strike out than most Asian laborers make in a lifetime.  The fact that 99.9% of the population would euphorically celebrate their incredible luck for months to be in his shoes and get paid tens of millions to play a game is lost on him given his current perspective.

Retarded analogy aside, point is the same.  Our guys have already stepped back from the IU loss to take inventory and realize:

  1. They have the best player in the country on their team.
  2. They outplayed the #2, arguably #1 team in the country for 39 minutes.
  3. Zeller had about his best possible game (especially at drawing ticky-tac fouls) and we still only lost by 1.
  4. UM cannot possibly rebound any worse, and we still only lost by 1.

They should be stoked at their chances going forward.

Our guys' minds are on right, because they know they're legit, and they're going to box out just a bit better, and do everything else the same, and the rewards are going to come, beginning with the imminent PSU spanking T-minus 2 hours.

F*ck yeah!  'MURICA!!!

and a down-and-back-out 3-pointer away from being outright B1G champs.

You win some and you lose some when the margin is that thin.  But we were there, and now there are two tournaments in front of us.

It's 0-0, and based on the close margins, both are there for the taking for any one of a handful of teams.

As Beilein has said, "Why not Michigan?"

Penn State has played us tough for whatever reason twice.  Whether we have weak or strong mental state Newbill and Marshall look like pretty good players against our perimeter defense.  I trust Beilein to make defensive adjustments and have the team focus, and we definitely have the talent, but we need to play well.

Michigan got two horrendous breaks at the end of the Wiscy and Indiana games, resulting in losses.  I am hoping those breaks even out in the NCAA Tournament.  Besides, sometimes you have to get really close in big games and lose before you can learn to win.

At the beginning of the season, I would have been ecstatic with this record and the possibility of a 1 or 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.  This team is in a great position.

Wouldn't be great if they ended the season by putting it all together, getting some breaks along the way, and winning ten games in a row?

When was the last time Michigan won on a shot at the buzzer?  Do you know?  Because I can seem to only recall being beat at the buzzer -- Wisconsin, Indiana this year, Duke in the tournament 2 years ago, previous DEATH TO BACKBOARDS Wisconsin, etc.

I feel like, eventually, we've got to catch a break.  I really thought it was ours at the very end of the game Sunday because Burke flew right to the hoop right through a relatively open lane.  I remember thinking that this would be vengeance for so many close (1-2 point, at the buzzer) losses in the past couple years.  What happened?  Shot didn't fall.  Maybe it's a Michigan thing.

had a tip in near the buzzer against Purdue.  That would have been around the 2002 range, don't know if it was legitimately at the buzzer or not.  After that you would probably have to go back to 93 UCLA and Carolina (the first time - Maui).  I seriously cannot think of another one.

I appreciate the OP's good points. But I'd like to chime in to agree with some other commenters that use of the word "retarded" may fly on other boards, but MGoBlog doesn't need it. Otherwise, great post.
