Follow up to the Dantonio Incident Today

Submitted by Mr. Rager on

Some dude just posted on the Rivals message board about the coaching clinic today aka the Mark Dantonio incident.  I am not sure what the rules are about posting a direct quote from a premium message board about a coaching clinic are, but here goes the best part:

"Wanna know why MD was so upset? He was upset before it ever started, because for the SECOND year in a row, the moment you walk in the building there is a huge table spread out with all of UM's camp and clinic info, brochours, practice visit info, etc. A grand spread. And for the SECOND year in a row, MSU's table is small and stuck off to the side in a corner. Buddy said the entire MSU staff was PISSSSSSED the moment they arrived yesterday, and they bolted out of there as soon as they were done today. The UM staff, meanwhile, is still there mingling with the HS coaches and putting on a very nice representation of the U of M. In fact my buddy got to sit with Funk all alone and shoot the shit about OL coaching for a half hour last night."

There is a lot more to it, but he basically confirms all the rumors are true, and Dantonio lost a lot of credibility with Michigan HS coaches.

Dantonio's a douche.  Period.  Had his chance, pulled off an Outback Bowl championship.  Nice peak Douchebag, nice peak.  He should be frustrated...

RCMB is fantastic.  There is one guy worried about what effect this might have on their recruiting for every 20 who are totally pumped at the balls Dantonio showed by taking on a Michigan assistant coach.

That is funny. Now that Michigan is emphasizing recruiting the Midwest (Michigan, Ohio specifically) and Meyer is at OSU, MSU will soon be hurting for talent, and hurting bad. Rodriguez allowed Dantonio to recruit well in the state of Michigan; Hoke will not. Acting like a child in front of Michigan HS coaches was not a good idea for MD.

I don't understand why Dantonio was mic'ed up while Hecklinski was speaking - especially when Hecklinski didn't have a microphone himself.  What did they want to do, listen to his breathing?

We really should give MD a break, I mean he's probably been kissing the a$$es of Jim Tressel, Gene Smith, and Gordon Gee for years, trying to line himself up as JTs replacement and now the Urb got the job, he's stuck in EL,wouldn't you be pissed and irritable as well.

I expect that Dantonio also gained as much "credibility with Michigan HS coaches" as Brady Hoke lost by not showing up for this event.  Why wasn't UofM's head coach there?

applies here.  Do you know WHY BH was not there?  Do you bother to look up the facts of a situation before you open your mouth?

Our wonderful Coach Hoke was out of town.  He was ateending a small little conference that some say is fairly important.  I agree Hoke had a choice to make.  I, for one, think he made the correct choice; however, others may disagree.

Coach Hoke was attending the annual Bear Bryant Coach of the Year conference.  You might have heard about that?  Its a tiny little gathering of, say, the best FB Coaches in the country.

So here is another example of why sparty is sparty.  Miwhiskey, (sparty-wolverine) shoots off the mouth before he collects the fact.  sparty always does this: draw the conclusion then search for the facts that support his conclusion.

Its called mental illness: please get help.

I'm a UofM grad (1966) living in Wisconsin.  I did not know why Hoke was not in attendance.  That's why I asked the question.  I still believe Dantonio picked up points with the local HS school coaches by attending this event.  Hoke was not there.  Advantage: MSU.  Unlike some people on this board, I was not trying to be a smart ass.

In the UM coach just sitting down.  He comes off better probably the way he handled it, but part of me wanted him to say, "You had your chance to talk little brother, now please respect my time to talk and don't interrupt me again."

I'm not disappointed.  Your first inclination is correct.  He does come off better taking the high road.  The only reason I can see someone acting like Dantonio did is that he came in with an inferiority complex.  I mean, UM went to the BCS bowl, Hoke isn't there because he's at the Bear Bryant award ceremony, the Michigan display of literature out classes MSU's display.

Then Hecklinsi gets up and talks about how Michigan recruits, probably pointing out that off-field performance, like grades and citizenship are just as important as on-field ability--a relevant point for HS student athletes, and one that HS coaches are likely making all the time anyway--but if they can go back to to their players and say a bigtime college coach says the same thing, that lends authority and credibility to the point.  Dantonio, already feeling small and insecure, blows up, maybe realizing the contrast with MSU's approach is being called out.

Now, the previous paragraph is just speculation, but given everything we know about Michigan under Hoke and recruiting, I have to believe Hecklinski was stressing that aspect. But even if not,  even if we grant the possibility that Heclinski was somehow way off where he shouldn't have been in his presentation (which seems doubtful from all the information available, btw), Dantoinio's response was still the ultimate douche bag response.

After looking at the class rankings for B10 recruiting, I think I understand why MD didn't understand the format.  Sparty is at the middle of the B10 6th out 12, with less than a month to NSD, obviously they don't understand recruiting at all.

This board is funny. I read "let ND be ranked higher in recruiting we'll beat them on the field". Then MSU has been out recruited by Michigan according to rankings for years has kicked michigans tail since Dantonio has been there badly the last couple but that mantra doesn't apply now. I guess this is a special load of recruits. Not like the other higher ranked classes. [lol] Dantonio has crawled inside your ears and has laid eggs. Appealing to any logic on this board do you actually think the fake email which was sent around took the time to poll all the coaches there on their feelings? Or football coaches care about displays? Unless there were free clipboards given away at them I walk by maybe grab a pen. NOBODY cares. I didn't even notice them there yesterday. Beer is way more important. This wasn't a science faire and the Michigan guy was right saying "I know my place" You'll get your chance next fall. That's what's beautiful about this. All the message boards lies and rumors dont matter when the ball is kicked. That's what will always be beautiful about the MSU/ uofm game from here on out. You either stand and deliver or go back to the message boards and talk about past glories and how you beat a team that beat your rival. HahahahahhH

Even if Jeff Hecklinski was off-topic or running over his time allotment, there's a way more Mark to sidebar in a considerate manner without being a dick.  I just don't understand how a guy without any hint of social grace rises to the position of head coach at a major college football program.

You know, Woody didn't like Michigan and Bo didn't like OSU and they still were able to find ways to be civil to each other.  Dantonio is literally a 6 year old child.  What the hell does he say to a kid like Mario Ojemudia when he tells him he's passing on MSU to go to Michigan?  "Well fuck you, I never really wanted you on my team anyway.  Fuck off!"?  Something like that seems outrageous, except with Dantonio, it seems so plausible.

It's good for you. Let it wash over your body. Let it touch your soul. MSU is fourth maybe fifth on your list of rivals. They don't matter to you Dantonio doesn't matter to you. Hahahaha. Remember when JLS or Bobby would be fearful of anything Michigan? Remember when the MSU staff would kiss the Detroit media's butt? Weren't those good times? Now they have a coach that just doesn't give a crap? He's single minded and obsessed with big ten titles. Dantonio is neither intimidated or upset by anything Michigan in his state. His state. I have good news for you however: From here on out all you have to do is stand and deliver. Winner takes all. All the message boards and recruiting rankings just dont matter. Just win. Stand and deliver. As long as Dantonio is there we'll give you great competition on the field. Isn't that what you want? Would you rather have that team you beat 4of 5 times and laugh about or a team that competes and you feel good about beating? Game on guys. Enjoy it. We sure do. Stand and deliver.

Lost a lot of credibility with Michigan HS coaches?  At least is confirmed to have called Dantonio, and contacted journalists, to say that Dantonio "absolutely did the right thing" and UM's coach "wasn't appropriate for this event".

I am sure there are coaches that didn't like what Dantonio did but don't lump everyone together, as is often the trend when slamming MSU.  Plenty of people thought that UM's coach was out of line there.  There are people who felt both ways  so you have no grounds to write this off as a "lol Dantonio is a dummy omg lol what an embarassment".  That's simply not the case.
