Floyd vs. Floyd

Submitted by Lordfoul on
There is a very real chance that our Floyd (JT) may end up covering Notre Lame's Floyd (Michael) at some point on Saturday. I fear this may lead to a tear in the fabric of space time (and many, many easy ND touchdowns). And the sprinkles contain Potassium BENZOATE! (That's bad.)

I realize that Floyd looked horrible against Western, and by no means do I want him covering one of NDs top two receivers. But I don't think we should just give up on him based on one play in his first collegiate game. I mean people* on this site were actually still arguing that Sheridan was a quality option up until last Saturday, so I think we should give this kid a little more time to prove himself. EDIT: *not me, but people

Right now we have two good CBs and are hoping that we won't need to use a 3rd. That reminds me of the Ohio State game in either 2005 or 2006 (my memory is slipping...). We had Leon Hall and Morgan Trent, and then nothing. We told ourselves we could get away as long as we didn't need to bring in a 3rd CB. So, what did Tressel do? He went five wide and immediately exploited our weakness. I'm hoping Charlie is too stubborn to do something similar.

Our defensive personnel and scheme this year is much more flexible against teams that run multiple receiver sets than it was when we played Ohio State in '06. We have two outside linebackers who won't be easily exploited in pass coverage, even against talented third receivers. This should mitigate our lack of depth in the secondary. I kind of hope that they go to multiple receiver sets. I think that our linebackers match up pretty well with their RBs and third receivers (although I guess we didn't see Evans against Nevada), and if they go out of protection packages, they're going to have problems stopping our pass rush.

Tressel also had a sick rb to keep us honest. I think Armando Allen is good, but IMO he is not on the same level as Beanie Wells. Wells broke a run that killed us every year.

JT Floyd is one of those "Diamonds in the Ruff" three stars, ain't he? But seriously, if Boubacar and Warren are healthy, and Notre Dame brings in more receivers--the guys other than Floyd and Tate are likely not to run deep routes which will force Floyd to run fast and long. He'd be covering the guys who would run shorter routes. And even if they catch it, if he can tackle them, he'll be OK. But I don't see Charlie doing that--I think he thinks his base offense is good enough. The only thing we might see are more screens and possibly more tight end action. Ahem. And I would like to see Floyd not get hammered because of one play. I know the eckspurtz here and on other boards have already figured out that he is no better than a one legged blind midget with Marfan Syndrome, but there is a chance there was a mix-up in coverage on the long pass by WMU, and there is a chance that he can learn from it. CALL ME FUCKING CRAZY! I KNOW!

I don't expect Weis to go 5 wide right off the bat, I think he was impressed enough by the pass rush UM gave WMU that he will keep the TE blocking for the first play to judge it for himself. That said he has shown a lot of confidence in this Oline already, and I wouldn't be shocked if my first sentence was totally wrong. I am sure that we will be attacking your secondary though.

While it appears that Floyd completely got beat on the TD pass, where was the safety help? Woolfolk was late in coverage. Maybe it was nerves, maybe he just read the play wrong, but that is the time to make a mistake is when you are up by 31 late in the game. Fact of the matter is we need to get Floyd, Turner and Simmons, or whoever else will see snaps this year, on the field as much as possible in the right situations (by this I mean not in high pressure situations, make or break scenarios), because as the year progresses we will face multiple spread attacks and these guys need the experience.

secondary. If BG, MM and RVB and Death Roh get to Jimmah early and often, our secondary will look much better. The best defense against their deep passing game is to pressure Jimmah to get rid of the ball before he's ready. It creates opportunities for turnovers as well as makes Jimmah cry.
