Exit: Mike "Stoney" Stone of 97.1

Submitted by UMxWolverines on February 16th, 2024 at 10:03 PM

Today was Stoney's last full day on 97.1 and Jim Costa will be taking over come Monday. He will still fill in as needed he has said though. Congrats and happy retirement!

His hot take attitude will grind on you eventually. He filled in for Rico on the Valenti show awhile back. First 2 shows were incredible, then took a steep decline after that and Mike had to carry the show as always. (Yes, I'm one of the rare UM fans that like Valenti and find him consistently entertaining.)

Hopefully he find his groove in the morning and it works out.

I've never heard a broadcaster more miserable after a victory than Costa postgame after the Lions beat the Chargers

Team guys have to walk a fine line of enthusiastic criticism.   Jansen and TJ Lang are excellent at this.  Costa?  no.

I'm disappointed he will be on am drivetime.   To me a somewhat more talented Brian Chapman

I mostly liked Costa when he was on Big Drew and Jim but haven't heard him since then. At the time I thought they had much more reasonable takes and discussion than the national media, although they're still sports media personalities so having a few stupid discussions and hot takes is a requirement. I wouldn't be surprised if he became a hot take artist since then, though. He was trending in that direction when he was solo on "And Jim".

I love Moore's staff I really do but that is a lot to deal with in a few weeks. When you watch the best, most conditioned defense in Michigan's history its going to be a little sad to watch all the architects leave. Im ready for the next chapter but it was a little bumpy to say the least.

Detroit legend.

A lot of memories of his voice in my childhood. My family had one car growing up: a 1988 Dodge Caravan with only AM radio. All that was ever on the radio was WDFN and my dad loved Stoney and Wojo. A long and respected career.

I'll miss his innate ability to make drops out of so many things he said. He could really roll with the punches and that was always endearing.

Jim Costa seems like hes decent but his "over-enunciation" gets quite annoying after a while, like dude we're just Michigan people, speak like a normal Michigan person and not a Bob Costa robot

I grew up in Ohio so I knew nothing about them until I started going to Michigan games in the late 90s. I heard about the on The Wolverine message board so every time I would be on my way to ann arbor I would always try to catch their show. I had totally forgotten about them until this post. They were a great listen

Stoney is a Detroit legend for sure, Meh on Jim Costa.

In addition to Wojo, I liked the late, Jamie Samuelson with Stoney.

And back in the day, Bob Page in Detroit and Pete Franklin on WWWE Cleveland if the radio waves were coming in just right.

I have fond memories driving around Ann Arbor, as a teenager in the 90s, listening to Parker and Stone / Stoney and Wojo.

There weren't anywhere near as many media channels and distractions back then, and they delivered an authentic common narrative thread for a ton of kids growing up in SE Michigan.  Good stuff Stoney.

Stoney was to sports talk what the old time late night guys like Johnny Carson were to late night talk shows. Just very fair and even keeled. Not like the guys currently on late night shows or sports talk shows like Valenti that are just major league trolls.

I remember when he was on the Sunday Sports Albom and I tried to listen every Sunday night - being so hungry for Sports Talk. Then WDFN happened and I was hooked.
A great memory was when Stoney called Rob Parker an AssHole on air.  Certainly Parker had it coming  : )
