Do you remember the crazy ending to 2001 Michigan at Wisconsin Game?
This is crazy, for some reason I didn't quite remember how we won this game (which, coincidentally, was the last time we won.

Yes, I remember. Brett Bell, the freshman Wisconsin CB who ran into the ball, was down to U-M and U-W during the last days of the recruiting year. He chose U-W, and game U-M the win.

Also, current UM strength coach, Ben Herbert, is #42 for Wisconsin

Lovely video. Unfortunately, there was 26 minutes of Brent Musburger to listen to to get to the happy ending.
September 29th, 2021 at 11:59 AM ^
I was there in the UW student section. We thought we were dead.
September 29th, 2021 at 11:59 AM ^
Absolutely. And thank you to the dumbass Wisconsin player for not getting out of the way of the ball so we can take possession and kick the game winning field goal. This kind of fluke happens to Michigan a good 1% of the time so there's no guilt in winning this one.
This made Lloyd 5-0 against Barry Alvarez. I loved beating Wisconsin every year. And I loved how their Rose Bowl teams still couldn't beat us. Remember when we held Ron Dayne to 53 yards? Good times.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:04 PM ^
My first football game I ever attended was the 1999 Wisky/Michigan game. I remember Ron Dayne being a god at the time. Then Michigan shut him down that afternoon.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:10 PM ^
0 total yards for Dayne in the second half.
I remember Tom Brady throwing a 50 yard bomb to David Terrell. When Terrell got up, he put his hands on his hips and looked at the crowd for about 1 second and that was enough for the ref to throw a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty on him.
Gameday was in Madison for that one. Loved seeing the disappointed Badger fans leaving the stadium.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:15 PM ^
Remember when we held Ron Dayne to 88 yards the following year? Good times.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:32 PM ^
That was this game. 88 in the first half, 0 in the second half. Also a 4th down stuff. The year before, Dayne was held to 53 yards. He kept running the the wrong way on option plays and blamed the big house crowd noise for him not being able to hear the play calls.
The year after the 99 game featured the over the body touchdown pass from Henson to Terrell in the 4th quarter…one of the loudest non-rivalry games ever at the big house.

Wish we would have used this max-protect formation with no returner vs. MSU.
September 29th, 2021 at 2:01 PM ^
Yes, that would have been a good idea... but max protect doesn't help much when the punter fumbles the snap badly.
September 29th, 2021 at 3:23 PM ^
I've always thought he fumbled the snap because he saw three rushers uncovered to his left, and he took his eyes off the ball as he was in a hurry to move to his right, which was the way he kicked.
September 29th, 2021 at 2:01 PM ^
Actually, Michigan had issues with punt coverage periodically and in 2003 you could argue that both the Iowa and Oregon losses were the fault of special teams, thanks in part to a disastrous attempt to integrate the then-trendy spread punt formation.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:01 PM ^
I fast forwarded through most parts of the video and the first thing that stuck out was the focus on DL coach Brady Hoke at the ~15 min mark
September 29th, 2021 at 12:09 PM ^
I would take Brady Hoke back as our DL coach, and only our DL coach, in a heartbeat. He's excellent at it.

Is that a young Warde at 17:45?
September 29th, 2021 at 4:47 PM ^
Was he clapping?
September 29th, 2021 at 12:01 PM ^
I'm sure the crew at Fox will forget to mention that the LAST TIME MICHIGAN WON IN MADISON WAS IN 2001, THE YEAR MICHIGAN LAST BEAT WISCONSIN IN MADISON.

LET'S SHOW A REPLAY TO REMIND FOLKS WHAT HAPPENED 20 YEARS AGO!!!!
September 29th, 2021 at 12:04 PM ^
Probably. I remember that time the Steelers played the Seahawks in the Super Bowl and they totally forgot to mention that Jerome Bettis was from Detroit.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:06 PM ^
"AND IT TOOK A CRAZY MIRACLE BOUNCE FOR MICHIGAN TO PULL OUT AN UNLIKELY WIN!! WAY BACK THEN. IN 2001. WHAT WERE YOU DOING IN 2001, GUS?"
September 29th, 2021 at 12:02 PM ^
I'm not sure either team gets to 20 points this year.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:04 PM ^
Yeah, 10 safeties by either team seems a bit much to ask.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:05 PM ^
Instead of expecting doom and gloom - how about we create some positive mojo by remembering endings like this.
Thanks for posting OP. Here's hoping the asinine pessimists on this blog don't ruin this chain. Strong energy for this surprising and fun team is needed and welcome.
September 29th, 2021 at 1:15 PM ^
Anyone under the age of 35 probably doesn't have any games to remember.
September 29th, 2021 at 2:35 PM ^
Yep. One of the very few advantages of being old!
September 29th, 2021 at 2:54 PM ^
False.
Threet's huge run vs and ultimate comeback win vs Wisconsin in 2008 was pretty neat.
Jourdan Lewis' one-handed INT against them in 2016 was super cool and one of the best INTs I've ever seen even though it was fourth down cost us like 40 yards of field position.
September 29th, 2021 at 3:45 PM ^
Free shirt game in 2008. Still have mine. Fun game in an otherwise shitty season.
2016 pick was epic.

the Machete John Thompson with the pick 6!
Minor is Major!
September 29th, 2021 at 10:45 PM ^
Eh, I'm 32, but have been watching since I was about 8. 1997 was my first full year watching, only downhill from there, lol.

banking the punt off the leg..... excellent play call by Lloyd!
September 29th, 2021 at 12:16 PM ^
You could have specified "...last time we won" as the last time in Wisconsin that we won! I started writing up a blurb about the big win in 2016! But then I realized I was the only idiot that didn't understand, so he we are...
September 29th, 2021 at 12:37 PM ^
And then some jagoff (me) would've pointed out that Michigan also defeated Wisconsin 2018.
Crisis averted!

...the 21st night of September?
September 29th, 2021 at 12:20 PM ^
I have to laugh at how comical the end of game clock management was for Lloyd (this seems to be a pattern with the program). It is nice that he gave Wisconsin an extra 10 seconds at the end of the game out of the kindness of his heart when we could have taken a knee on first down after the muffed punt and then spiked the ball with 4 seconds left on second down - there was more than enough time to be able to do that without having to rush. I do not recall if Michigan had a timeout at that point but if we did it is even more laughable.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:23 PM ^
I was thinking this as well. Clock management was never a strong point with that staff (not terribly better now either).
September 29th, 2021 at 4:50 PM ^
In Soviet Russia, clock manage you.
September 29th, 2021 at 9:29 PM ^
Lloyd wasn’t bad at clock management overall. His teams ran excellent two-minute drills. He’s the only Michigan coach to be good at that.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:27 PM ^
I think the idea is that if something goes wrong (bad snap), there is a chance to spike the ball and take a second try.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:41 PM ^
Think of this way: If we snap the ball for a FG with 4 seconds left, the only way you lose the game in regulation is 2 ways:
- FG is blocked and returned for a TD
- Snap goes two miles over the holders head, defense picks it up and runs it back for a TD
If you snap it with 14 seconds left, you still have the two problems I have listed, plus now you have to defend against a kickoff return or a blocked FG return leaving time on the clock and then a Hail Mary in exchange for the possibility of there being a bad snap, which is recovered by the holder or the kicker, and then the special teams unit having the mental fortitude to proceed with a fire drill FG in the event of not having a timeout left.
If you disagree, I am cool with that, but to me it is wayyyy less risky to drain the clock down to almost 0 and try the FG then to give the other team any time.
September 29th, 2021 at 3:13 PM ^
I agree, but the argument is that snapping the ball for a the kneel-down introduces the chance of a fumbled exchange and that being a TO. And John Navarre had already fumbled once (admittedly it was on a pass) in that game so there might be some additional concerns about ball security. It was a different time back then and in a game like this I could see Carr taking the safe route.

Can we go back to wearing those road uni's?
September 29th, 2021 at 12:27 PM ^
Sorry, I had to turn it off after hearing "blue and maize" in the intro.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:29 PM ^
yes. i was there. kinda relaxing until OT. then the punt happened.
September 29th, 2021 at 12:45 PM ^
With about a minute to go and facing 3rd and 6 in a tied game on their side of the field, we throw the ball 4 yards short of the sticks to our best WR and then punt. That's a Lloyd Carr 4th Q right there :)
September 29th, 2021 at 12:53 PM ^
Nothing warms my heart more than an out route short of the sticks on 3rd down. Like, can't you call a pattern where the WR has some forward momentum so if they do catch it short of the sticks they can turn and (gasp) go upfield instead of OOB?
September 29th, 2021 at 2:52 PM ^
Okay, but why would any coach want to gain yards or score points when they much more easily eat clock, concede possession of the ball, and lean on the defense to hold things down for the rest of the game?
Sincerely yours in football, Jim Harbaugh
September 29th, 2021 at 12:47 PM ^
I remember Navarre having about as many passing yards as Cade did vs Washington if my memory serves correctly. Also, I believe that was the game we ran a great PA at the goal line where Perry dove over the pile without the ball
September 29th, 2021 at 12:55 PM ^
58 yards passing, leading receiver was Ron Bellamy with19 yards. We ran for 105 yards with BJ Askew and Chris Perry leading the way. Marlin Jackson ran a punt back for a TD. Not sure how you win with such little offense, but they squeaked it out
September 29th, 2021 at 1:00 PM ^
Yes - I was there as an undergraduate with a few buddies! That was before Wisconsin had become a juggernaut. There was a Wisconsin guy in the stands next to us who said shortly before the punt, “don’t worry, we will blow it. We always find a way to lose these games.”
