Dior Mathis?

Submitted by Raback Omaba on
As our defense has struggled, especially our secondary, it has become increasingly apparent: We're gonna have to have a good, maybe a few good, years of recruiting corners and safeties. First and foremost, we need depth. Upon reviewing the cornerback recruiting ranks, it seems that one of the best Cornerbacks we're going after is the young Dior Mathis. Dior Mathis, CB, Cass Tech Mathis is a young, speedy and small stud. He can flat out play. The kid can be a threat on offense as well and would make a perfect slot in RichRod's offense. Amazing hips for a CB. Great hands and speed. Likes to play "in your face." We need this kid. Need him bad. The update is that we need to get him. To show Cass Tech CB's that they're still welcome in Ann Arbor. Losing Cissoko really hurt, but welcoming the young lad with a fashionable name is what we need to do. We need to erase that "BooBoo"

Can we please stop with the immature name calling? Fag-Tonio? Good Grief! And really what exactly did you update us on? Thank you for your wonderful insight as to why we need a 4* cb who got invited to the AA bowl. I see no reason why you are not on staff.

How on earth would Fag-Tony-o be correct, even if we were to go along with douche-nozzle name calling? His name does not include "Tony" anywhere in it, which is confusing. Plus the hanging -o makes him sound like a cereal. Mmm, fag-tony-o's...?

This was one of the worst posts I've ever seen on here. Don't mislead us into thinking there's actually an update when it's just you basically talking to yourself. Call up one of your buddies next time you want to ramble on and on useless 'information' about a high school student that we really need. Bad.

Word is that Dior wants to goto Michigan...problem is that he is below Christian and Grimes on the board. Dior wanted to enjoy his AA moment ala Big Will, since he thought he was a 5-star and UM would wait for him. Unfortunately, thats not the case...so he may be on the outside looking in, in the end..

Even if Grimes and Christian were already committed, why wouldn't we have room for Dior? I didn't realize we were so stacked at CB that we didn't have room for one more. While I'm at it, can someone give updates on Grimes and Christian? I'm not that up-to-date on recruiting

"Blue_Bull_Run," I think some such as myself feel there might not be room unless we oversign. With the rule change not allowing us to allocate early enrollees to the prior class anymore we only have 5 spots left based on the 20 verbal commits we currently have. Granted we can oversign by 3 for a total of 28 commits, but that number needs to be down to 25 by the time they enroll, and crossing our fingers that (3) don’t qualify etc doesn’t show good ethics in my opinion. With that being said, if we only sign 5 and two being Christian and Grimes, the other 3 spots in my opinion will be reserved for a DT and an LB and the last spot would be for Grimes’s teammate if his commitment truly hinges on them playing together.

but he certainly reminds me of Cissoko as well. All of the hype and talk about how he plays "in your face" and has "fluid hips" etc etc etc, sounds a lot like the talk about Cissoko when he was in HS. Maybe Booboo wasn't too small, but there was something that kept him from translating that 5* rank into collegiate success. I don't think there is a huge problem with someone looking at a potential recruit, comparing him to someone he resembles and than forming an opinion based on that comparison. I can't say that I would be overly excited about seeing another 5'8" corner patrolling our defensive backfield either.....just sayin'.

I was referring more to the statement of "we don't need him" rather than the" he's too small" comment. I think , if he had his priorities straight and put in the work, Cissoko could and may still be good. But to say we don't need him is not a smart comment. I would also like to see some more size too, but a lot of those smaller quick db's are very good as well. I just hate to automatically. Discredit someone for being small or not ideal size. That's all.

I posted this yesterday, but WITHOUT Mathis, we could potentially have 11 corners on the roster next year: Warren, Woolfolk, Turner, Rogers, Jones, Witty, Avery, Talbott, Grimes, Christian, and Floyd. Now obviously Woolfolk could move to S, Warren might leave for the NFL, Witty might not qualify, etc. But that's 11 possible corners for 2 spots. If we had that much depth at every position, we'd need 121 scholarships. Since Christian and Grimes are significantly better than Mathis, no, we don't need him.

Yes, we do need talent. That doesn't mean we need Mathis. If Mathis is the only guy available for the 25th slot, then sure, let's take him. But if he's going to take up a spot that could be taken by Josh Furman or Mike Thornton (just for examples), then we don't need him if we're going to get Grimes and/or Christian.

For our defense, Grimes is a better fit. Robinson seems to like bigger corners who can play physical. He likes to put his corners out on an island and let them shadow receivers. Mathis has a lot of talent. He's shifty and fast and has decent ball skills. But, to put it simply, he lacks the size to be an effective corner in the Big Ten and in Greg Robinson's defense. I dislike his abilities for the same reason I disliked Boubacar's coming out of high school - they were/are both technically sound and had great agility, but they were small. I was saying that prior to the AAA game, and Cissoko got torched by Michael Floyd. And he obviously didn't fare too well in the first half of this season, either. They're similar players, and it doesn't bode well for Mathis if Cissoko lost his job. Now...if we have an extra scholarship to give or if Tony Drake decommits or something, I'd be happy to take him later, maybe as a slot receiver...
