Detroit Mercy guard Antoine Davis to transfer

Submitted by jmstranger on April 14th, 2022 at 5:29 PM

Antoine Davis, the number 22 scorer in college basketball history has entered the transfer portal. He was the number 3 scorer in the NCAA last year at 23.9ppg. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

Could he be an option for Michigan just down the road?

Obviously benefits from playing 5 full years with the Covid year, but he has an outside chance of breaking Pete Maravich's NCAA all-time career scoring record next year. He would need to play 36 games and average 26ppg (his current career average is 25ppg)

If he continues at his four-year pace as a super senior, Davis will end up with more than 3,400 career points -- which would rank No. 2 all-time behind only LSU legend Pete Maravich.

At first, I was like DAMN! Then I read this about ole Pistol Pete ...

Pete Maravich is the all time leading NCAA D1 scorer with 3,667 points scored and an average of 44.2 points per game.

He's the leading D1 scorer and he played when there was no shot clock, no 3-point line, and couldn't play as a freshman.

Pistol Pete was my idol when I was in junior high school. I wore #44 and his patented floppy socks. When I got to high school, #44 was a large size jersey and since I was the point guard it didn't fit. Had to switch to #10. Anyway, Pistol was and still is my favorite basketball player. RIP Pistol Pete🙏

I wore #44 too. If Pistol Pete had been alive to see me play, he probably would've personally asked me to change numbers. I sucked at bball.

I'm glad the basketball arena down here is still called the Maravich Assembly Center. It's a true homage to him. Though I am a bit surprised they haven't changed it to something the Shaq Shack...

LSU coach Dale Brown went back and charted all of Pistol Pete's shots and calculated he had 13 threes per game ( that counted as twos) so he scoring average would have been an inconceivable 57 PPG.

Bill Walton and Pete Maravich had the best/most dominant college basketball careers.in the 20th century. Both way ahead of their time and unfortunately had NBA careers shortened by knee problems.

Bill Walton tells a great story about how Maravich had been traded to the expansion New Orleans Jazz  (not Utah) who had not won a single game ( 0-14). Walton's Portland team was pretty good , won the NBA title a few years later. Portland was up big at half when Pete decided to basically play 1 against 5 in the second half and won the Jazz's first game on the last play of the game going through entire Portland team falling out of bounds throwing up a high arcing swish.

Probably the most under appreciated basketball superstar.

Pete Maravich averaged 16.7 total FG makes per game over his college career. There's 0% chance that 13 of those were from even the older, shorter 19.75-foot 3-point line, especially as Maravich was known as being pretty great at driving to the basket (hence the 13.9 FTA/game). Would a 3-point line have inflated his stats even more? Sure, but not 13 PPG more.

I'm sure he was fun to watch, but it must have been awful to play with him on those LSU teams.

- LSU sucked his first 2 years, were pretty good his senior year

- he had by far the lowest shooting % on the team (of course on ridiculous volume)

- not only did he score half his team's points, his first year he was 2nd in rebounds! Of course, he led in assists too, but his points/assists make Harden look unselfish.

What a drag to run up and down the court, just standing around while Maravich dribbled around and hoisted up shot after shot.

Thanks Ross. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. Speaking of high volume shooters...

Andre Curbelo is officially off to St Johns. Can't believe he played as much as he did last season with the concussions he suffered.

Curbelo was a preseason first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2021 and was expected to be one of the best point guards in the country. But he suffered a concussion in an October exhibition game and missed 14 of the Illini's first 18 games because of issues related to the concussion.

I saw him play in Chicago against UIC before the pandemic. His numbers:

Comments:

  • Keep in mind he's not playing Power Five competition in most of those games.
  • He might be the best walking definition of "volume shooter" in college basketball.
  • As many know, his dad (Mike Davis, formerly of I.U.) was coaching him.
  • He looked smaller than his listed height to me. Tiny, almost. Not very physical.

Could he help Michigan? Sure, but it's hard for me to see him transitioning to a relative role player after spending four years as the center of the UDM universe.

The guy has hit 36% of his 3's for his career on high volume and shoots 88% from the line and you think he'd be a role player at Michigan?

I'd understand if maybe he did this for one year...but we're talking about a guy who has averaged 20 shots a game, 10 threes a game, and five free throws a game...across four years.

And he'll be 24 years old when the season starts.

I can't imagine he wouldn't be able to contribute in a big way at Michigan...or almost anywhere.

I wouldn’t define a guy with a .567 true shooting % as a volume shooter. That connotes low efficiency and he wasn’t. For a guard those numbers are very efficient. Also his ~90% from the foul line portends to a guy that may be an even better shooter than his other numbers show.

He's not really a volume shooter. He has a really good TS% plus teams schemed to take him out of the game where UDM had zero threat to punish the scheme. AD has range up to close to halfcourt and often takes difficult shots. A lot of his shots are off the dribble jumpers which tends to be a lower percentage shot.

He's definitely a take for Michigan if he wants to transfer to Michigan. He'd upgrade the G spot as a combo G.

2 years ago against #1Gonzaga he had 31 points and averages over 20 pts a  game vs the Power 5 schools.   Also had 24 against MSU Al while missing 9 threes.    He is a good player built like Allen Iverson.

Only 10 more days until the deadline to declare is up so at least we will have some team clarity soon. I’m surprised we haven’t heard anything as of yet, or at least some rumblings.

And yes—he and Frankie Collins could play together. I’m not saying full time, but you could put Davis off the ball and let him hunt shots and have Collins guard the opposition’s better guard.

You are right, but if we faced a team with any size in their backcourt, those two would be at least 3-4 inches shorter than who they had to guard. With that lineup, we might have an even worse perimeter defense than we did this year. Unless we can also find a Chaundee; even then we would get killed by an Arizona shaped team.

He’s still in college?!

My parents went to UofD (before Mercy). My dad took me took me to a game in 2018 and I remember watching him light up Callahan. I didn’t think he was a freshman then. Played away above his grade.

This morning Clayton and Ant had a very nice piece about next year's roster. Everything about Hunter, Caleb and Moussa remains up in the air for a couple weeks. The guard situation is much better defined-so Michigan can/is working/looking at additions. Ant believes the top option should be a dynamic portal kid from Illinois-Brandin Podziemski...6-5, elite shooter and athlete. This makes a lot of sense to me.
