Damar Hamlin medical situation
Anyone watching MNF right now? There is a terrible medical situation unfolding in which Bills LB Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field after making a tackle. There's an ambulance on the field and medics are administering CPR.
This does not look good. Frantic prayers.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:09 PM ^
Pretty sick right now. Dear God please be okay, kid.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:29 PM ^
I’ll jump in here to update what is going on… Both teams have gone to the locker room and I would guess they’re going to make a decision as to whether they will resume the game.
DamarHamlin was taken away by ambulance after CPR was administered on the field for at least 10 minutes.
Update: Game suspended for the evening.
Hamlin is at the University of Cincinnati medical center in critical condition.

Amazed this happens this rarely tbh. Happens in other sports a lot. Maybe they are doing more testing now on the heart, etc -but given the intrinsic violence and insane cardio in football, seems we've been quite lucky in the NFL and CFB over the past few decades relative to sports like soccer, where these collapses are pretty frequent.
Soccer, of course, is more cardio intensive, and less acutely violent, and could explain the higher likelihood of bodily collapse.
Prayers out to the young man.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:00 PM ^
From a pure cardio standpoint, football may not be as intense as some other sports due to all the stoppages, and the running clock that means you’re actually playing for like 10 minutes. In soccer, you run like 5-6 miles a game.

I’ve read a lot of speculation on social media and other sources surrounding tonight’s event. Let’s differentiate some of the major causes. from what we saw tonight, that is most likely Commotio Cordis, or a sudden traumatic shock to the heart causing a lethal arrhythmia. This can happen to anyone.
#1 cause of sudden cardiac death in athletes, HOCM or Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy
#2 cause, ARVD - Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia
these are both inherited or congenital heart defects. sadly they are not often detected until a life threatening event happens. They are some of the causes of Sudden Cardiac Arrest(SCA), which are electrical problems associated with the heart.
These 3 causes are not heart attacks or myocardial infarctions, which is blockage of supply of blood causing injury or death of heart tissue. Though a heart attack/M.I. may result in SCA

Out of curiosity, is that what happened to Chris Pronger?
January 3rd, 2023 at 12:44 AM ^
I believe it was, it looked very similar, I forgot about that game against the Wings. For the majority it requires defibrillation or a precordial thump. Seems that Pronger’s was a non-sustained event, meaning it very luckily resolved without either intervention.

Aortic rupture is always up there with any blunt trauma to the chest.
January 3rd, 2023 at 11:37 AM ^
No, it's not. Traumatic aortic ruptures occur with high energy deceleration injuries, like car crash and fall from height. Two humans, even really fast ones, running into each other is not a sufficiently high energy event to tear an aorta.

To clarify when a heart goes into this chaotic rhythm it does not just “stop”. This is a fallacy perpetuated by Hollywood’s EKG of normal rhythm to flatline. Picture a heart just quivering, not effectively pumping blood forward. The only way to fix it is to reset it.
The best analogy is that of a marching band out of step and playing notes at random. As the heart is defibrillated it is like the band members are momentarily knocked down and brought back up to march and play in sync again.

Absolutely horrible to watch
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:09 PM ^
You can tell by looking at the players that this doesn't look good. Praying he's ok.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:09 PM ^
Literally feel nauseous watching it.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:10 PM ^
I only saw it out of the corner of my eye (and I'd care not to see it again), but didn't he flip/come down in an odd way? Something didn't look right when I glanced at it live.
EDIT: PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:11 PM ^
Looked like a whiplash type impact with the main impact in his chest. Wondering if that stopped his heart or ripped open a major artery.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:11 PM ^
This sucks. Looked like he took a helmet to the chest. Stood up and then collapsed. Been around football a long time and never saw anything like this.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:08 PM ^
hadn’t been watching. your description sounds like Commotio Cordis.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:26 PM ^
I agree. Can’t find any info of whether he was defibrillated. Seems he should have a decently good chance of survival if that is the case since he had access to a defibrillator within minutes
January 2nd, 2023 at 11:34 PM ^
I hadn’t heard of Commotio Cordis before. Here’s a video explanation for others wondering:
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:11 PM ^
He made a tackle, stood up and took a few steps, appeared to look a little confused for a moment, then suddenly went limp and collapsed. It was absolutely horrifying.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:13 PM ^
Thank you.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:12 PM ^
More he took the brunt of good collision while tackling receiver...to his torso. He gets up "fine" but things clearly not fine and collapses within about 2 seconds.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:14 PM ^
And to fall completely backward without attemtping to cushion the fall...
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:14 PM ^
Thank you as well.
Like I said, I had it on in the background, and I guess I looked up at the wrong time.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:10 PM ^
I don't know how a game can resume? That's the least of concern, I completely understand. But with regards to the rest of these "warriors", how?
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:14 PM ^
I was thinking I cant remember a situation like this before, but just remembered I was watching the Red Wings game where Jiri Fischer collapsed on the bench. They postponed the rest of the game and resumed it later.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:35 PM ^
Lions game where Barry hit 2000 yards. Reggie Brown went down with a neck injury and they had to do cpr. Ambulance on the field. Recovered but never played again.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:13 PM ^
I’m old enough to remember Lions receiver Chuck Hughes. Collapsed and died right on the field.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:48 PM ^
Good thing I checked. I was going to mention him too. It really was horrific.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:50 PM ^
I was 12 and at the Chuck Hughes game. When he went down Mel Farr stepped over him to go back to the huddle but Dick Butkus went nuts calling for help from the sideline.
After about 10 minutes or so my dentist dad looked at me and said “I think he’s gone. He hasn’t moved since he went down”. It wasn’t until we got home that night that we learned he had died.
January 3rd, 2023 at 12:49 PM ^
It was surprising/shocking that not a single commentator that I heard (including the local Detroit news folks on Channels 7 and 4) mentioned the Chuck Hughes incident, since that was the benchmark for such a horrible incident. Of course, since that occurred in 1971, most were not alive at the time to remember it or the name "Chuck Hughes," a name in Lions infamy perhaps more so than 90% of the others. Hopefully, this doesn't happen any more often than every 50 years in the NFL and preferably never again.
It was curious that I first learned about the situation while watching CNN. Anderson Cooper included it among his news tidbits around 9:45, so I could switch over to ESPN and learn more (not that they really reported much more than their concerning comments).
Players were certainly emotional. I wonder how it will affect their future plans, if at all. Seems like anyone considering retirement would do it pdq. I would think that wives/families would be even more emotional/vocal than the players.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:16 PM ^
I was at the Red Wings game when Jiri Fischer collapsed. It was the first period I believe and they called the game right there and sent everyone home. I think his heart went into arrhythmia or something like that and was resuscitated on the bench by a doctor who was nearby. He was OK afterwards but never played hockey again, I think he was only 26.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:25 PM ^
Same. They replayed the game months later. I couldn’t make it to the make up game. Hope this kid is ok.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:12 PM ^
Not sure how they can keep playing under the circumstances but don't know what's going on entirely.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:13 PM ^
They need to go to commercial for the duration. Go to studio. Anything but this until you have something. And don't be advertising football right at this moment.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:31 PM ^
When they played the commercial for the NCG and the narrator said something like "Football is where anything can happen", I literally cringed (and not in a humorous way).
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:40 PM ^
Yeah, that ad CANNOT run there. ESPN is completely fucking tone-deaf.
January 2nd, 2023 at 11:27 PM ^
Go to a splash screen that says "stand by please".
Instead ESPN took this opportunity to sell another dozen or so ads.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:14 PM ^
I can't remember ever seeing anything like that anywhere. The way the players were reacting was haunting. I don't even know what to say. Just hoping for the best for the kid.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:26 PM ^
Watching the way he collapsed immediately after standing up, my initial thought was cardiac arrest. I pray he pulls through.

I pray the Lord's blessings of healing and health for this young man.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:15 PM ^
I live in Cincinnati....there are several excellent hospitals within a 5 minute drive of the stadium. I hope this young man is ok.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:55 PM ^
I’m around quite a few good hospitals myself and none of them could help my daughter. We ended up getting recommended to a hospital in Cincinnati and they were able to help her almost immediately. I have a lot of respect for the hospitals in Cincinnati and believe they are doing everything they can for this young man. Praying for him, his family, and his teammates. Scary situation.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:15 PM ^
They should strongly consider canceling the remainder of the game.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:17 PM ^
Super scary. Hope the young man is ok. Lisa Salters sounds shook up. Game has been suspended.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:17 PM ^
Couldn’t they just call this game a tie and call it a night?
January 2nd, 2023 at 11:04 PM ^
Suspending the game was absolutely the right call, but any decisions with respect to resolving the outcome of the game (i.e., whether the remainder of the game will be canceled and recorded as a Bengals win, canceled and recorded as a no contest, resumed at a later date, etc) are best left deferred to tomorrow at the earliest.
January 2nd, 2023 at 9:18 PM ^
Just an insane situation. Hopefully he's fine but I feel so bad for him, his family, his teammates and everyone else involved.
