Curious Forcier comparison from GBMW

Submitted by Moe Greene on
From GBMW's mailbag: http://gobluemichiganwolverine.blogspot.com/ Eroc responded to a question about how comparable Forcier is to Zac Robinson: "As for quarterbacks, Tate Forcier reminds us of BYU's T. Detmer and Wisconsin's B. Bollinger." Two issues here: 1) Detmer and Bollinger don't seem comparable to me - not only stylistically but also in terms of quality. For example, I'd have to think that Detmer still holds NCAA passing records... 2) Looking ahead - if what Eroc is outlining are actually the upper and lower bounds for Tate's career as a Michigan QB, how many of us would sign up for that right now?

Tate with QBing competence this year, I'll be happy and the team will win. From what i've read from yesterday's practice, Tate is doing well and probably will start the opener.

Well yeah, but I'd take a terrible Sheridan over an extra-terrible Forcier any day. I'm with you, I'd rather not see Sheridan on gameday every again, but if he's the best option, I don't want him on the bench just people are still licking their wounds from last year.

I'll sign up for 12 weeks of Brooks Bollinger right now. Especially if that means DEATH isn't under center against any non-Delaware State teams.

it seems to me that Coach Rod was waaaayyyyy more critical and frustrated with Threet than with Sheridan last year. Seems like he appreciates Sheridan's effort and realizes he's trying hard, but had an internal struggle with Threet. He's also mentioned the QBs are mentally ahead of last year, which I'd expect of Sheridan, but wouldn't expect of Tate given that he has had the same amount of time Threet did in the system last year. What made Rich Rod so frustrated with Threet vis a vis Sheridan? Was it potential matched with performance?

RR loves the quick pass/bubble screen to WR's you saw so often last year. If you watched the interviews and his show, he had orgasms about how Sheridan was able to throw that pass in stride, whereas Threet did not. The other factor was choosing the reads on the run option. Clearly Sheridan was ahead of Threet on those things. Talent and execution in the downfield passing game, save for one game, was obviously Threet, and easier for us to see from the bleachers.

My comparison for Tate is Todd Reesing, the kid from Kansas. And, GBMW blows. Unless it does not blow. Although it might not blow at all, but instead just suck. 50/50. No Sugarcoat.

I agree with you 100%. I compare him to Todd Reesing, with the exception that Tate has a stronger arm. Not too many people find this a sexy comparison. Trust me, if Tate turns out to be as good or better than Todd Reesing, we are in for a very exciting season. Here's the deal: In this offense, the QB needs to act as a point-guard. I like to compare him to Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns (when they were good). Steve Nash is not as physically gifted as the other players around him, but he strategically delivers the ball at just the right moment. Also, Nash has a knack for knowing when to drive to the rim (rush the ball) and shoot the 3 (out-route). Tate does not need to be the fastest runner, the strongest athlete, or the tallest QB. He just needs to be the most cerebral player on the field. Here's something else: Tate is not the prototypical freshman. He has been groomed since day one to become a D1 QB. As a result, his mechanics are flawless and he has killer instincts. Also, I cannot emphasize enough how important it was that he enrolled early. Couple this with the unfortunate event of Sheridan breaking his leg, Tate has experienced more first-team snaps with the offense than most Junior level QBs. He will be ready to go. To hell with the skeptics. Call me crazy for predicting an amazing season. I am all in for this team, and I cannot wait for what is about to happen. We are on a mission to kick ass, and take names. This is a ravenous, fearless squad with a quiet confidence about them. I have never seen a Michigan team with this flavor of passion. Damn it feels good to be a Michigan wolverine!

Tate will remind us all of his brother, Jason, when DENARD banishes him to the bench for good starting TODAY. AMIRITE?
