Want to win a world championship?
Hire Theo Epstein.

Epstein is going to bring Harbaugh on as an Enthusiasm analyst.
November 3rd, 2016 at 9:19 AM ^
Must be tough to compete with 200 million dollar payrolls.
November 3rd, 2016 at 10:17 AM ^
He looks like Phil Dunphy in that picture.
November 3rd, 2016 at 12:41 PM ^
Their payroll at the start of the season was $173 million. Which was $57 million MORE than the Cubs $116. Which is close the median.
November 3rd, 2016 at 1:03 PM ^
If it was that easy the Yankees would've won every single championship since their dynasty years (which revolved around their farm system players)...
Boston didn't start spending Yankee style until after Epstein left, and that didn't get them anywhere either.
Epstein knows how to build teams. I wonder if he can do it with another franchise like the As.
November 3rd, 2016 at 2:00 PM ^
Because those 2 teams have won 8 out of the last 20 World Series titles. No, of course it's not every year because so many things can happen in 162 games, but I would call 40% a ridiculous number.
Boston had the 2nd highest payroll in 2004, and they did nothing after Epstein left? Because I would call winning the World Series in 2013 something.
The Cubs signed Zobrist and Lester for a combined $211 million. In hindsight, how does this team look without them? Give me a break.
Money is everything in baseball because it either increases or decreses your window as a title contender. The Cubs don't have to worry about losing any of their talent because all they have to do is pay them. You get to sign players, or make trades without worrying because who cares? All you need to do is pay them to go away, but a move like that would absolutely cripple the teams in the bottom 3rd of payroll.
It took the Indians years to recover from Travis Hafner's contract. Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Dodgers, Cubs, Tigers would have just cut Hafner after the 2nd year and moved on.
I'm not saying that Epstein isn't good at his job, what I'm saying is that in Goldeneye he's rolling around with a shotgun while half of the league is coming at him with throwing knives. Wake me up when he does something in a salary capped league, or wins the world series with the Brewers.

I wonder if Theo could be a competitive GM in another major sport, the front office equivalent of a multi-sport athlete like Bo Jackson.
It would be one thing if he played baseball and that's all he knows. But as far as I can tell (from his bio), he didn't play baseball. Granted, it's probably all he knows (and his obvious passion). But in the end, he's a businessman.
High payroll or not, it's not easy to put together a championship team, especially for an organization with the history of the Cubs.
I, for one, am a fan.

Then again, we did go through this on a few occasions in the 90's.

This has nothing on a Bulls championship. This is a franchise whose trademark was futility, the butt of every joke, legitimately thought to be cursed for 108 years, and they finally won.
I don't even know what Cubs fans do next--what happens when the one barrier against your entire existence falls?
November 3rd, 2016 at 1:15 AM ^
and by tomorrow, I mean on 11/4...much the same thing that happened in Boston is what I figure, though.

This has nothing to do with Harbaugh, but holy hell is this cool. Evanston set off their emergency sirens at the final out. Every neighborhood on the north side is basically going nuts. Fireworks everywhere. Completely bonkers.

108 years from 1957, the last time the Lions won it all. Which means they'll win in 2065 when I am well into my 80s.
