Craig Ross Appreciation Thread

Submitted by MaizenBlue93 on October 21st, 2022 at 2:59 PM

The guy kills it every week on the MGoBlog roundtable and is an outstanding representative for the fanbase.

On a side note, has anyone read his book "The Obscene Diaries of a Michigan Fan"? I've just recently become a fan of Craig and thus have not read it yet. It seems like a great read in the off-season though.

I sometimes find that Brian comes down too hard on CR during the roundtable.  About a year ago, CR spent some time watching Caleb Houstan's high school tape.  CR had some less than positive comments about Caleb Houstan, and the majority of the roundtable came down hard on him.  Well, CR was right in his assessment of Caleb Houstan.  CR knows his shit.

Houstan and Diabate suffered from Shea Patterson disease.  Had they been a  3 or 4 star like Iggy and played as well as they did they'd be appreciated a lot more.  (Still maybe in the Jordan Poole category.)  Being a 5-star we expect Weber/Howard/Rose level performances and are diappointed with anything less.

When I first started listening, I thought he was an old curmudgeon who complained about refs and talked about the 50s.

After listening more, he is my favorite person on the roundtable.  Brings a great perspective and is hilarious.  Love him.

I love Craig. I love when Sam would have a conversation with Craig one-on-one before the Roundtable. The weirder he gets, the more I like him. German philosophy? Please and thank you. Michigan football in 1893? Of course. Student life in the 50's/60's? Tell me more. Referee conspiracy theories? I'll listen.

love hearing Craig's opinion ... quite knowledgable about all things Michigan.  Genius move to have Craig on the MGoBlog Roundtable !!!    Also sits next to my son in Michigan Stadium ....

Craig is thoughtful and interesting all the time, but I particularly love the bits he brings in on the introductions. Poor Sam:

"Seth, how have you been!"  "Great! <Followed by funny anecdote of 20 words or less>"

"Brian, how have you been!" "Good. <Followed by a few seconds of painful dead air>"

"Craig, how are you doing?" "You know, I read Brian's UFR this week and it started me thinking about changing social mores during Venice at the time of the Medicis. <Launches into 90 second analogy ending with> And that's why having JJ in your offense is like having a poisoned ring during a dinner party - it makes all the threats harder to defend."

(To be clear, I love all the guests, and listen every week, but the introductions are always a hoot.)

Craig is the best. Wish he was on the podcast more often. I really wanted to read his book, but the font in the copy I got was so small that it was not enjoyable to read (sucks being old).

Anyone who can use the power struggle between the Mensheviks and the Bolsheviks or between Leon Trotsky and Uncle Joe Stalin to put bad refereeing in the B1G in context is OK by me.

Note: User name checks out when it comes to getting most of CR's obscure historical references.  I'll save the rest of you jamokes from having to type it out...

Both of Craig's books are great. I flew through them. I would recommend  them. It took a bit of a search to find them. But they are very good.

I definitely wish that Sam Webb still had the Craig Ross hour. Those were amazing.

CR would probably be the best dinner/party guest ever!

Brian did not like Ed and said so explicitly in the MgoComments some years ago. Also, Ed added nothing to the round table. Sounded like a guy who ran regression models to predict game outcomes but didn’t actually watch the games (this comes from a guy with two business degrees who has been guilty of the same!)

Wow. I am humblified.

All I can say is what I believe; that most of you could do as well or better than me and that it is an honor to be a part of this fan base, especially the MGoBlog posters.

Please stop by and share a beer.

Craig, you are amazing and the Michigan fanbase is truly lucky to have you.  I want you to look at that through the lens of "one of the most prestigious and respected programs in the history of North America is lucky to have you speaking about them in a public forum."

We all wish you nothing but the best.  If you and I are ever in the same pub, you aren't paying for a single one of your own drinks.
