I would hope that long term we could find someone very good to replace him.   In the very short term (e.g. early signing period next week) it probably really hurts our short term ability to capitalize on the Ohio State win.  Having the guy who is coordinating your recruiting efforts leave in the middle of a two week push to early signing day can’t be helpful.

If he's only been here for 5 months, it's impossible to tell if his departure is a "loss" or even "a gain"

Our recruiting class for 2022 is currently ranked #14. Now, we'll see how well we close, but I think it's just very hard to to tell with these things.

If anything, better to depart sooner rather than later, get the replacement in as fast as possible and get to work.

For the same position?

As we've seen with some of Beilein's years, success on the field/court doesn't automatically translate to recruiting wins.  His replacement will be very important.

Saw this earlier and was waiting on someone to post it. Seems odd he is doing this for the same position. There was speculation that he was getting an on the field position so that is why he would leave. Why would he leave for WA for the same position? Seems odd. Must like the west coast, I guess. Hopefully he was here long enough to change the recruiting environment that was seemingly lacking in the past.

From the article:

Morgan was rumored to be under consideration for an on-field position at Washington last week. According to Mahler’s report, this would be a lateral switch.

The move seems baffling. He's a UM legacy, it's a lateral move at best, and he seemed to be doing well at UM. The only things I can think that would cause him to take a position like this:

  1. He has personal beef with Harbaugh or the UM admin. Haven't heard anything along these lines, but that provide an explanation for him wanting to get away.
    OR
  2. It's more of a quality of life decision, to live on the West coast. I believe he lived/worked out West for a number of years before Harbaugh hired him on at UM. Maybe he just missed the natural beauty of living out West? It's the only objectively better variable in the equation.

In lieu of any reports of dysfunction between Morgan and the UM staff/admin, I can only assume it's more to do with option 2.

Still, hopefully Harbaugh backfills the position, rather than leaving it unfilled. From everything that was reported when Morgan was hired, he was coming in to fill a glaring hole in Michigan's recruiting department.

None of this is confirmed, of course.  It could be that the path to an on-field coaching position is going to be easier in Washington, whereas it is less likely here.  Let's wait and see.  If it is just a lateral move, hopefully UM can at least try to outbid Washington with a nice raise.

this kind of crap just drives me crazy.  "i haven't heard this, and there's no reason to think it on any level, but i might as well write it anyway."

i don't think it matters, at least not to anyone actually connected to the program, but someone, at some point, is going to remember reading it, somewhere, and the next thing it's common knowledge on this stupid board that courtney morgan left because of some vague disquiet within the program.  maizen can't wait to quote it, and it's something that you completely pulled out of your butt. do better.

this kind of crap drives me crazy.  We absolutely should not self-censor because some snowflake is afraid that some future pinhead will misremember what we post.

Do better.

I don’t know why people keep saying, “he must love the West coast.”

Yes, technically, Washington IS on the West coast. But other than geographically, it has nothing to do with what people mean when they say how nice it is to live on the West coast. Seattle is not southern California which is what everyone pictures when they talking about living on the “west coast.”

I'm actually very much aware of the diversity of the West coast. I've never thought that "West coast" only referred to Southern California. Generally, when referring to Southern California, people refer to...Southern California. Or SoCal if you're cool.

Edit: And by the way, Washington State, and especially the coastal areas (which is on the opposite of the East coast) is an incredibly beautiful area. It's very different from Michigan. Hence why it would be a draw to someone who has spent time out there.

It's disappointing regardless. Roster stuff is huge and has been a problem during the Harbaugh era; stabilizing that has been a big deal. I certainly hope there aren't issues; we haven't heard anything to suggest that there are.

...I will say that, just based on what has happened when Michigan has hired coaches, there's a possibility that the move *initially* appears to be lateral, but his final role may not yet be determined. Michigan has certainly hired guys whose positions were, at the time, not set in stone, and only later clarified what they were. So maybe there's an upgrade of responsibility still to come.

After the culture improvements this year, we need to stop with this BS. I am disinclined to think ANYONE at Michigan has a personal beef with Jim right now. By all accounts, we're firing on all cylinders, and every position group has improved. Apparently Warinner had some issue, but he's gone now, and Moore is apparently 100x the OL coach Warinner was.

Also, why would Harbaugh leave the position unfilled? It wasn't unfilled when Dudek was here; it just wasn't paying great dividends.

This post makes you sound like a Harbaugh hater, and I'm not sure how anyone can be that way after this season.

Signed, a former "fire Harbaugh" guy.
