Conan O'Brien 'trolls' Jim Harbaugh in Michigan skit

Submitted by murderwolflives on October 13th, 2020 at 1:21 PM

I consider this to mostly be weak trolling - but still made me laugh a little overall.  In light of recent events personally - and for the world at large - a laugh was nice.

Their 'trolling' moment:

"So get out and vote, 'cause if you don't, you're kind of letting other states that aren't as awesome as Michigan, Ohio, make decisions about your education, your water, your roads and your jobs.

"And unlike Jim Harbaugh, voting costs nothing, it's very effective and it lives up to the hype."

This is 100% true. Conan is at his best when doing "improv" and just shooting the breeze with people. Most of the skits on his show over the years have been pretty lame. The podcast is unscripted and he mostly just insults his co-workers and then chats with celebrities. I generally don't laugh at podcasts, but I do at his.

To each his own as far as humor goes, but I have never found Conan even remotely funny in the limited exposure I have had to him (promotions for his show).

I heard this the other day, but I can't recall if it was one of the local sports shows or Dan Le Batard's show.  Whoever it was said they always found Conan to be really entertaining when he was a guest on other shows.  He always seemed more relaxed and natural and it allowed his humor to come through so much better than when he was hosting his own show.

Yeah, he's buried on TBS.  He landed there after NBC dumped him only a month (or so) after Leno retired, so Leno could come back.  He got royally fucked by Leno and (especially) NBC in that fiasco.  Leno finally retired for good less than a year later.  I was never a fan of Leno...  And NBC copyrighted Conan's best material, so he couldn't take it with him.  His writers at TBS also suck, so his show now is only a shell of what it used to be.

Jim Harbaugh, shockingly, seems far more thick-skinned than I'd anticipated from the whole Colin Cowherd situation a bit back, I'm sure he got a giggle despite him more than likely denying it to anyone who asks

I remember the good old days of the 90s and early 00s... back when we were winning conference championships, about as often as not, and when Conan O'Brien was funny.  Sadly, neither of those have been true for over 15yrs now.

You know, I was thinking about this just the other day.  Include the late 80s, 90s and early 00s.  Good times for Michigan football for sure and includes my 4 years there.  But by my calculation, UM's best winning streak against OSU was 4.  Even shitty Cooper managed to beat UM a few times to stop winning streaks, '94 and '98 specifically.  That's a far cry from what's going on right now.

Curious what beef he has with Michigan, since he’s not from Ohio, didn’t go to OSU or any rival school, doesn’t appear even remotely associated with having an interest in any college team, or if he’s just going after low hanging fruit. Either that or he’s got a writer on staff who hates Michigan or something.

I don’t care one way or the other. Just curious what beef he has.

After Conan's stint on The Tonight Show and his largely overlooked show on TBS, isn't him mocking Harbaugh for not living up to the hype a big case of the pot calling the kettle black?

I've been Team Coco since 1998, before such thing even existed.  While I don't watch his show all that often, as many have noted his podcast is a huge hit.  And, what makes Conan so great is that he is much more than "just" a show - he's essentially launching an entire production company. Tv, podcasts, comedians, specials, live shows.  Chances are, if you don't like him personally, you like someone or something that he's directly behind.  It's quiet impressive.

Not always the biggest fan of the scripted stuff - but I would agree.

Conan is a HUGE advocate for those unnoticed in the industry and does a WONDERFUL job of promoting those who need the boost.

I think he is a genuinely decent guy as well.  Haven't heard of any b.s. or scandals.

For that matter, Harbaugh is a decent guy, too. He acts on his sincere beliefs, just as Conan would have you believe he does. Wouldn’t be surprised if Conan makes more money, though, and all without having any direct performance metrics to be held to. Unlike Harbaugh.

PS - is it just me, or has "kicking somebody in the head while their down" become the latest fashion accessory in American culture?
