College Gameday and Early Games Open Thread 10/08
College Gameday is at the Red River Shootout this week. Coming up after the next break they'll be talking about Michigan.
The early games are mostly lame except for the main game:
- Oklahoma-Texas (ABC)
- Minnesota at Purdue (ESPN)
- Louisville at North Carolina (ESPN2)
- Maryland at Georgia Tech (ESPNU)
- Illinois at Indiana (BTN 2:30, so kind of a late afternoon game)

"Man, this Sooners team looks good enough to blow TWO BCS bowl games this year."
October 8th, 2011 at 1:11 PM ^
Texas is down 20-3. Go Sooners.
Minnesota vs. Purdue is unwatchabale and unlistenable. Pam only had to say "Boiler Up" and I'd had enough of her talking.
October 8th, 2011 at 1:29 PM ^
Beth Mowins not Pam Ward.
October 8th, 2011 at 1:40 PM ^
But the resemblance of the game call is eerie.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:27 PM ^
Because women should only say 'Boiler Up' when narrating their tales of cooking spaghetti... amirite?

Not really surprised to see Minny getting worked over this badly. I didn't take much from last week except that Minny was really bad at football. That said, I don't Purdue is that good either, and wouldn't be surprised if they fell off a little as the game progressed. At some point, the Gophers are going to pull whatever pride they have and play something resembling football for at least a quarter.

Is this sort of season that can get a first-year coach fired? Especially after seeming to throw the former coach and current players under the bus for lack of toughness?
October 8th, 2011 at 2:15 PM ^
No. They aren't getting results like we are, but I've heard some of our coaches say our players lack toughness, even comparing them to the players they inherited at Ball State. It takes time to change the culture in a program. We were just lucky enough to have a lot of talented players returning.
October 8th, 2011 at 1:15 PM ^
needs to stop committing personal fouls on special teams. Roughing the kicker just resurrected a 4th and 19 for Purdue.
October 8th, 2011 at 1:17 PM ^
So how in the hell did we get destroyed by Miss. St.? This team is not good, it is hard to believe they destroyed M 10 short months ago. Miss. St. in a scoreless battle with winless UAB with 8 minutes to go in the half.
October 8th, 2011 at 1:42 PM ^
GERG, dead-man walking head coach, MSU still had Manny Diaz...Mostly GERG though.
October 8th, 2011 at 1:39 PM ^
Minn scores a field goal, Purdue must be terrible
October 8th, 2011 at 1:40 PM ^
If anyone is looking for a different game or something to watch at halftime here's a link to Army at Miami(NTM). mac-sports.com live streaming site actually will broadcast every MAC game today I believe besides Central Michigan at North Carolina State which will be on espn3.
October 8th, 2011 at 1:43 PM ^
I love seeing FSU lose, I hope wake can keep it up. Anyone know what channel that game is on?
October 8th, 2011 at 1:49 PM ^
Same here. I'm not exactly sure why I do, but it really warms my heart.
October 8th, 2011 at 1:52 PM ^
Both my neighbors children went to Florida State so I have to like them some but I really enjoy seeing basically every Florida team lose
October 8th, 2011 at 1:56 PM ^
What time is Central Michigan on today?
October 8th, 2011 at 1:59 PM ^
3:30 on espn3 against NC State
October 8th, 2011 at 1:57 PM ^
My neighbors went to Iowa + Minnesota. Growing up, my neighbors went to Ohio State.
I don't root for them.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:07 PM ^
This is Purdue, and they still would have trouble containing a corpse.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:08 PM ^
Oh my, Minnesota is just terrible. How the hell did they stick with USC for a game?
October 8th, 2011 at 2:10 PM ^
Some teams leave the occasional hole. Minnesota is leaving entire quadrants of known space undefended.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:17 PM ^
Hmmm... I am trying to recall where I saw a defense like that recently. Must have been a bad dream
October 8th, 2011 at 2:23 PM ^
A defense like this is even less amusing when the offense lacks dilithium. Or, for that matter, a coal-fired steam engine.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:31 PM ^
Whereas we at least had dilithium, they have what could very optimistically described as a tricycle with a flat tire.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:49 PM ^
Just one tire?
October 8th, 2011 at 2:13 PM ^
Minnesota is what Michigan would have been in 2008 if Michigan wasn't quite as good on offense.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:18 PM ^
Wow Minnesota has a brutal schedule ahead. I feel bad for them.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:21 PM ^
Shane reportedly struggled last night. The only bit of the stat sheet I got from a reliable, HS-football-loving source was 5 completions, 85 yards. I know nothing about his attempts/TDs/INTs. Anyone have more info?
October 8th, 2011 at 2:33 PM ^
Ace was at the game last night and was Twittering:
October 8th, 2011 at 2:56 PM ^
Yeah, check out Ace's twitter. From what I've gathered, his team really isn't that good. Receivers dropping passes, no protection, no running game. Dunno about the defense. Actually if you look at his stats from last year, they aren't very good either. Last year he had something like just over 1000 yards passing on the year and just over 50% completions. Someone on the board pointed out that he didn't even have a TD pass in his league play last year (which was true). This is basically why actually seeing and evaluating a high school prospect is much more important than a stat line. From all reports he as an accurate thrower, HUGE arm, smart, and good size.
October 8th, 2011 at 3:08 PM ^
Plus OLSM is one of the best teams in the state.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:21 PM ^
This OU/Texas game is EXACTLY why I've said for 2-3 weeks now that we are ranked too high.
People keep jumping down my throat, but look at Texas, very similar to Michigan. Big school, coming off a disappointing year, goes undefeated and people start to believe and overrate.
Now I think we have better coaching and I think our schedule sets up better. But they were #11 and they're clearly not the 11th best team in the country. OU is beating them to a pulp.
Michigan hasn't played anyone either. Right now we're not at top 15 team. Beat N'Western and maybe...beat MSU and CERTAINLY.
Texas is getting manhandled...every thought that they were "back" was completely a farse. I don't think they're better than Oklahoma St. and may not be better than Texas A&M.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:28 PM ^
Hey Mr. Yost we are 5-0 just shut up and enjoy the ride!
October 8th, 2011 at 2:29 PM ^
Who are these people who jumped down your throat? I don't think any of us believe Michigan is as good as their ranking right now.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:46 PM ^
...read one post before yours and you'll have your question.
Trash posters like that.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:30 PM ^
Based on Resume, who would you put in front of us?
We've moved up because we've won our games: we've done what we are supposed to do. If we really aren't good enough, we'll lose some and move down.
No one is saying that we've won that one game that vaults you 10 places in the polls. No one is calling this Michigan team a national title possibility. So relax, and just enjoy.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:38 PM ^
You're saying that Texas is overrated, and Michigan should be ahead of them?
October 8th, 2011 at 2:39 PM ^
Someone just used his mod powers for evil...
October 8th, 2011 at 2:39 PM ^
you put too much into it. it doesnt mean shit right now anyway. still gotta play the games. re-fucking-lax and enjoy this beautiful fall saturday. go blue
October 8th, 2011 at 2:40 PM ^
October 8th, 2011 at 2:35 PM ^
Great start for Illinois.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:38 PM ^
This just in, Minnesota has the ball down 45-10 and is driving. In other words, they actually have 10 points!
October 8th, 2011 at 2:43 PM ^
I'm finding myself rooting hard for Minnesota to put this ball in the endzone. KIll seems like a nice guy and no team should be this inept in the Big Ten
October 8th, 2011 at 2:40 PM ^
Hoosier Daddy! Indiana 7 Illinois 0. Kick return for a TD
October 8th, 2011 at 2:45 PM ^
Purdue put up a glorious 10-second struggle at the 1, but the Gophers got through - 45-17 now.
October 8th, 2011 at 2:47 PM ^
hopefully Oklahoma loses this year so we wont have to play them in the national championship game. They look really good.
