Cody White Broken Hand-SIAP
Tough break for the kid.
He is one of Sparty's starting Wide Receivers. Given their running game struggles, I expected him to be one of the biggest threats to our D in 3 weeks. I doubt he'd return for this in 3 weeks, but without knowing the nature of the fracture, its impossible to say.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:04 AM ^
I would say their best WR.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:11 AM ^
I'm more worried about Felton Davis than anything. That dude can play.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:48 AM ^
Really? He just seems tall and not very dynamic. He also doesn't seem to hold up well against man coverage.
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:01 PM ^
I don't see MSU sustaining long drives against us, so I'm more worried about the dynamic WR that can break a play for 80 yards (White) over the wins a 5 yard fade route type (Davis).
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:08 PM ^
Problem is our man coverage scares the crap out of me. Davis is a big, physical receiver, I could see a lot of holding and PI calls. Hope not though.
October 2nd, 2018 at 2:08 PM ^
Our PI calls have been more for being grabby for being beat by fast WRs, not being physical when the WR is actually trying to catch the ball.
October 2nd, 2018 at 1:55 PM ^
I haven't watched every MSU snap, but Davis has won every one-on-one matchup I've seen him go for, and I've never seen him drop a catchable ball. White may be the better player, but I haven't gathered that from the MSU games I've seen.
Lewerke running, and Davis catching 50/50 balls are going to be my main concern when we play Sparty. Hopefully we take advantage of their less than stellar pass D.
October 2nd, 2018 at 3:38 PM ^
Our man coverage didn’t exactly hold up great against a big physical wr against Nd.

Totally agree. Every time I watch Davis play he makes great catches.

EDIT: My first double post. I knew this day would come.
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:20 PM ^
If it makes you feel any better, most MSU fans seem to agree that White is their best receiver despite Davis’ history and rep.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:05 AM ^
MSU would risk his long term health for him to be available for Michigan. There is no doubt in my mind.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:09 AM ^
He might not be able to do those coccyx adjustments later in life if he doesn't regain proper function.
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:30 PM ^
Maybe rethink this post and edit it away...
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:58 PM ^
Poor taste on that one. We are not the RCMB.
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:22 PM ^
Pretty sure the mechanics of catching a ball are not going to work if one of your hands is broken
October 2nd, 2018 at 2:05 PM ^
They still work with lots of stick em on your broken hand. They'll give him one of those Dennis Rodman clubs with pine tar all over it.
October 2nd, 2018 at 1:31 PM ^
It would be pretty difficult to catch and secure contested balls with a broken hand. I'm no doctor, however I think three weeks is awful early for a return with this type of injury.
October 2nd, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^
While I've only managed to break fingers (multiple ones on one hand at one time - long story), not an entire hand, it was a few weeks just for the fingers and even at that, forget catching anything. I can only imagine how much longer if it is the hand itself.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:06 AM ^
They are a team whose primary goal when they play Michigan is to injure the QB. I am sorry for White as a human being because he deserves compassion, but not for Sparty.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:11 AM ^
I bet he regrets listening to the staee basketball players about doing that floor slap thing.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:16 AM ^
I’m sure it won’t matter against us. I am sure he will either be back, or one of their other very average players will have the game or their lives.
As an FYI.. supposedly their injured punter is going to redshirt and return next year. Punting could be a real issue for them against us.
Edit: I’m a little confused by the redshirt, as he is a 5th year senior. However, Hartbarger’s dad works where I do and told this to a co-worker.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:23 AM ^
He may be eligible for a sixth year if he lost two seasons to injury.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:24 AM ^
For sure, but he was “Scout Team Player of the Week vs Michigan” his true freshman year according to their official bio.
Since it is MSU, it’ll work out for them.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:26 AM ^
Or if he was scout team player of the week multiple times and not injured at all.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:38 AM ^
If the injury isn't enough, maybe he can say some racist stuff, get kicked off the team, and come back next year for his sixth. I heard that works.

While playing counterstrike!
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:18 AM ^
What's the status of their o line?
Last I saw during the Indiana game the starting tackles weighed about 280lbs each. I'm assuming some of those guys were pressed into duty due to injuries but oh man they sound like prime bull rush candidates for Winovich et al
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:12 PM ^
They've got some injuries. They're abysmal at run blocking, but have been surprisingly OK at pass pro.
They've moved Higby to LT: he started the year at center and was getting pushed into the backfield on the regular, so yes your bullrush comment seems appropriate. They put Matt Allen at center and he looks OK, but since he couldn't beat Higby to start the year I'm suspecting he has a weakness (seems like they really wanted Allen to take that job in the spring/Fall). Beedle is below average at guard, but fine in pass pro. Jarvis was a 4* kid who was fine at the other guard, but he looks hurt now. They moved last year's right tackle Matt Campbell to fill that spot. I'd say he's above average or so. Again, terrible as a unit at run blocking. LJ Scott wasted a year of his life.
Chewins is their LT of choice, but he's been out all year, with some sporadic plays the last few games. He's probably ready to go for Michigan, but might not be in physical shape.
We should be able to have our way with them. We said that last year and for many years back. Dantonio seems to find a way with quick passes or cut blocking or scheme. But against the full big ten schedule this limitation should cost them some games.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:21 AM ^
That's a rough injury. I don't see him playing against UM, but hopefully he can recover.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
We would have defeated them with him.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:52 PM ^
Guaranteed!
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:24 AM ^
I only worry about M.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:27 AM ^
I see four or five of these bad boys in his future, just before the Michigan game...
October 2nd, 2018 at 1:12 PM ^
Josh Gordon's secret stuff? We're doomed.
October 2nd, 2018 at 2:20 PM ^
4-5 of those bad boys would send anyone to Mars where they can meet up with Elon in his orbiting Tesla, on the way there.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:29 AM ^
Not sure if there was a post about it but it's been mentioned. He's their second best WR and was a freshman AA last year. He may be out for the year, TBD for now but odds he's back for Michigan are slim.
From my count MSU's injury report is currently:
WR: White, Jalen Nailor, Darrell Stewart and Cam Chambers. Stewart is a starter, Nailor and Chambers are backups who play a lot. All 3 missed CMU but probably won't be out long term.
RB: LJ Scott, out the past two games. Dressed for CMU but didn't play so may be back soon.
FB: Colin Lucas. Starting FB who missed CMU.
OL: LT Cole Chewins, LG David Beedle, RG Kevin Jarvis, RT Luke Campbell. Jarvis didn't dress for CMU, Chewins and Beedle have both missed games this year and played vs Indiana but didn't start. Campbell went out vs Indiana but came back at the end. I think all 3 played vs CMU but not 100% sure.
DE: Jacub Panasiuk, Starting DE who played against CMU for the first time since Utah St.
CB: Josiah Scott and Josh Butler. Scott is their best CB who has been out all year and hasn't started rehabing yet, probably (?) won't play against UM. Butler is his replacement who missed CMU.
P: Jake Hartburger. Starter, probably out for the year.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:41 AM ^
FYI, I believe the name is "Hartbarger," though "Hartburger" sounds hilarious. And delicious...
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:46 AM ^
Always this human consumption subtext with you homicidal clowns....
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:15 PM ^
Hereafter, "Fartburger."
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:29 PM ^
He is their best WR. Davis is a big limbering guy who doesn’t get much separation.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:31 AM ^
Always a bad break to see a kid get injured. Speedy recovery and I am sure Spartans can NEXT MAN UP.
Hoping they can beat OSU/PSU and lose to us.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:49 AM ^
If you watched the slo-mo replay, that was one terrible looking broken wrist.
If you have not watched it, don't
Sort of like watching the Joe Theisman broken leg play.
And if you have not seen that one, don't go Googling around for it. You don't want to see it.
October 2nd, 2018 at 2:00 PM ^
Definitely don’t look at the video. Brian linked it in his “Unverified Voracity” post today at the bottom, and I made the mistake of clicking the link.

October 2nd, 2018 at 11:57 AM ^
I (vaguely) know both Cody and his dad - former Giants/Lions/Bengals CB Sheldon White (also did scouting for the Lions for years). He is a good kid and they are a good family even if they chose MSU.... tough break for him and hope he has a quick recovery and as always I hope we annihilate MSU.
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:02 PM ^
Since we're talking MSU, I'll chime in.
White is our best receiver, more explosive than Davis imo. Losing him is huge. MSU has been suprisingly injury plagued this year, probably 2-3 starters a week have been out. Against CMU, we were down to Davis and a bunch of backup slot WRs.
Our OL has also been pretty snake bit this year. Three different projected starts this preseason have missed games. I'm including Chewins in there, but he probably can't be considered a starter anymore. He hasn't started yet this year (started every game last year), but has played in I think 3 of the games. OL coach said he's still dealing with the injury so I doubt he's 100% at any point this year.

White is a terrific player and athlete. If not for DPJ he would have been the best athlete in the state. Tough loss for MSU.
