Chengelis Article with Mattison
Angelique Chengelis (DetNews) spoke with Mattison...here's a few interesting quotes
"The biggest reason is Brady," Mattison told The News on Tuesday night. "I know he's going to win. Michigan is a special place. The longer you're away from it, even when you're in the NFL, it's still Michigan. Every Saturday when we're in our rooms relaxing before the Sunday games, I always watched Michigan. That doesn't leave you."
But he said Baltimore coach John Harbaugh helped make it an easy decision.
"He has so much respect for Brady," Mattison said. "He came into my office and said, 'The job you've done here is unbelievable, but I would understand if you went to Michigan because it's Michigan. I would understand because it's Brady Hoke.'
"Don't worry about me recruiting," Mattison said with a laugh. "Recruiting is all about where you're at. If you really believe in the school you're at … it's easy to sell a place like Michigan."
"He's one of the best recruiters out there — he's a helluva recruiter," Irons said. "I'd put him in anybody's house and he'll sell them on Michigan and will be genuine about it."

Man, great quotes, great feeling of guys doing it because it's their friends, and man, I love the mix of confidence and "I got this" in his last line.
Plus, Jarrett Irons, my favorite player from the 1996 team that did not get the glory of the 1997 team.

Didn't GM recruit Irons's little brother to ND after he went there? IIRC, he had a nice career at ND. I remember being disappointed every year that we played ND that Irons wasn't wearing Maize & Blue.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:53 PM ^
My fault; just read full article and saw ref. to Grant Irons.

Good to hear the quote about recruiting... seems to be people's biggest concern about him being from the nfl.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:18 PM ^
GM had the reputation as our best recruiter when he was here and then he went to ND and out recruited us on a several players that we wnt head to head on if memory serves. This is an all around awesome hire!

I'm liking what I'm seeing.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:05 PM ^
Sounds like Harbaugh kind of wanted him to come here.....
January 18th, 2011 at 10:08 PM ^
...respects him, perhaps? Mattison and Hoke both served on Jack Harbaugh's WMU staff. There is a deep and abiding bond among these men forged by years and years of working together. Sounds like Harbaugh wants Mattison to be happy and pursue what he wants to pursue.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:10 PM ^
thanks for making my point!
January 18th, 2011 at 10:11 PM ^
...sarcasm (i.e., he wanted him gone). My bad.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:08 PM ^
And I can honestly say I am ashamed of myself for not wanting Coach Hoke while the search was ongoing. We made the right hire.
January 19th, 2011 at 11:02 AM ^
I was completely agaisnt the Hoke hire. I wanted Harbaugh, Gruden, any high profile OC/DC over Hoke. With the way things are falling into place...man it feels good to admit i was wrong! Very excited about the the next season, the staff, and even THIS ( yeah i said it) this recruiting class. The way things are shaping up im betting we steal a few last min guys.

Tonight has me feeling like a adolescent boy being approached by both Megan Fox and Natalie Portman for a Ménage à trois.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:11 PM ^
i'll go get you a towel.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:17 PM ^
A cigarette would be nice too.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:28 PM ^
Just TMI.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:13 PM ^
Melissa Theriau and Kate Beckinsale.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:29 PM ^
i have to pick only two? decisions, decisions....
January 18th, 2011 at 10:52 PM ^
Meagan Fox and Natalie Portman!!!!
January 18th, 2011 at 10:55 PM ^
Hate to admit this, but I saw Black Swan and was thoroughly turned on. I might actually substitute Megan Fox for Mila Kunis.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:02 PM ^
I'll go with Kate Beckinsale and Mila Kunis.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:19 PM ^
I'm afraid to ask what the prize is....
January 18th, 2011 at 11:25 PM ^
NSFW or H or Kass.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:22 PM ^
real nice. I'd like to think I could last more than 10 seconds.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
someone finally understands why i talk about Mila Kunis in every other post! bless you, sir.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:35 PM ^
Loves Kate Beckinsale if you know what I mean...so if you know of her whereabouts that would be mighty helpfull
January 18th, 2011 at 10:45 PM ^

Jon Gruden maybe.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:48 PM ^
I just got done laughing for 5 minutes straight after reading this. That is a big change from how I have been feeling after reading most posts on this boards over the last few weeks.
Great stuff!

They were one big family when everyone wanted Carr to go. It's nice. But it doesn't mean all that much.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:03 PM ^
But I know what you're saying...
January 18th, 2011 at 10:09 PM ^
I love it. That's one positive about having "Michigan Men" is that their love for the University will be felt by recruits in the selling process.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:14 PM ^
Yost coined the phrase and it was all about loving Michigan. There never was and there never will be a time to bury the "Michigan Man" standard.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:09 PM ^
It's one of the reasons why, IMO, the school down south has been so successful over the past ten years. The coaches and (most) players seem to have genuine love for the school and its traditions.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:10 PM ^
Thanks for another sound contribution, DGDestroys. Very exciting news.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:12 PM ^
Between these and many of Hoke's comments it's starting to feel like the early stages of a Hollywood movie production. Men coming home from coast to coast to save the football program at the school they loved. It seems like we are getting all the right actors, with all the right lines. All that's left is to deliver the goods. And I believe they will.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:13 PM ^
maybe this will temper the whole " he is to old to recruit" meme

Absolutely love hearing quotes like this coming from people out in the "real world." I know Harbaugh has connections to here from his dad. But to hear an NFL HC tell his DC he will totally understand leaving to take the same job at a college program...well that just brings back a sense of why the school we love is so great.
I'm absolutely fired up and ready to get aggressive, tough defense back here. We've got good things ahead.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:19 PM ^
Does anyone else think Hoke is holding the DB coaching job for his brother? Wouldn't be a bad thing to have an NFL staff around here. Just a thought after this spot wasn't filled today.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:29 PM ^
It would be great, but I think Jon Hoke said he's staying in the pros
January 18th, 2011 at 10:30 PM ^
that Jon Hoke doesn't like to recruit either?
January 18th, 2011 at 10:36 PM ^
I do remember both of these things being said but it is his brother. I don't like fixing drywall but when my brother calls I go and do it for him.
