CC: JH Update

Jay Glazer tweeted that even if the Niners win the SB, JH won't be back. Now I know several other NFL teams will go after him, and this probably isn't even true, but at least UM may have a shot.

Sorry no linky. On phone and don't know how to do that anyway.

You also have Randy Moss saying that he treated the 49ers like college kids.  He likely will stay in the NFL, but in the long run his style may be a lot more suited to college.

JH has a perfect style for college.  He demands discipline and is very creative within what passes for the "pro offense" nowadays.  Most of all, by the ttime his act wears thin, a player is a senior and then gets treaeted better for providing senior leadership.

Nobody stays around long enough in college for him to lose the locker room.  In other words, everybody wins: the college gets a winner, the players have a great chance of continuing their careers and Harbaugh's only real weakness is negated.

It's Brandon's uber capitalist tendencies that makes him likely to open the checkbook--the same quality many do not like in other areas likely would be an asset to bring in Harbaugh. But if Brandon gets fired, more likely the new person is going to be brought in to reduce all those aspects, and quiet the marketing and salary race. I can see Brandon offering Harbaugh 10 mil a year, or whatever puts him over Saban--harder to see a M sucessor AD doing that.

But exactly how much revenue do the roughly 100 students and 20 coaches and staff in the program bring in?

$82 million.

Football accounted for at least 57 percent of athletic department revenues in 2012-13, which totaled $144 million, according to Michigan budget documents provided to the Board of Regents.

The storied program and its larger-than-life venue are what solidifies Michigan's place among the most profitable enterprises in college sports. Football cost about $23 million to operate in 2012-13, meaning it fed more than $58 million into Michigan's other 30 varsity teams.

The $82 million haul doesn't count indirect revenues, such as sponsorships, licensing and advertising agreements — which totaled $22.5 million that year — primarily made attractive by the football and basketball programs.

You can invest to maintain and grow that $80 - $100 million cash cow, or you can milk it and watch it decline. Where's the plan to come up with that $58 million/year for the other varsity teams?

If the athletic department wants to depend upon effective ~$125 football ticket prices, it had better field a product that will continue to have sufficient demand at that price.

Also, note that Michigan's football expenditures are typical for elite programs and roughly a third lower than Alabama and Ohio State.

If the niners tank this year theres a chance he gets let go early, which would increase pressure on Michigan to get rid of Hoke before the end of the season. Unlikely but it is feasible

needs to be able to call the shots ASAP.

Hoke is a lame duck and whether he's fired now or later by itself places no constraints on back-channel negotiations.  What is important is the willingness, the ability, and accountabilities to be in place to offer Jim Harbaugh a $10M / Yr contract when and if the opportunity arises.

for Harbaugh. He and his family remain in the bay area which his wife wants and he takes over a young albeit bad team with only one trajectory and that is up. They are at rock bottom and this is where Harbaugh shines. The Oakland GM is a reasonable and in the past successful manager and easy to work for. This may be a good marriage for Harbaugh.

I don't think Mrs. Meyer really has all that much power. Urban was enjoying some Florida putang and got caught. He promised to retire and not coach again because the stress was killing him. A year later he's coaching at his dream job and Mrs. Meyer is still Mrs. Meyer. Pretty sure Urban wears the pants in that relationship.

I doubt it. If what you said is true, I don't know if Florida or Ohio are community property states but all Mrs Meyer had to do is say a few words to her attorneys and Urbz's net worth is halved and any minor children are gone.

Since when does a female determine where a guy will coach football?

When Rick Pitino was deciding whether to coach at Michigan or Kentucky, he wanted to come to Ann Arbor but his wife wanted to go to Lexington.  He went to Lexington.

When asked about it later, he said "Happy wife, happy life".

This isn't directed at you. But all this wife crap is bullshit. If Jim says honey, I've always dreamed of coaching at Michigan. She'll let her man go after his dreams. The $7 million will also do some convincing,

It's possible jim is learning the NFL isn't where he wants to be. It's definitely a possibility. If so, that would finally be good news for us, however, I want him badly, just doesn't seem like he and Brandon could coexist.
