CC: Does OSU getting 4th seed help Michigan?

Submitted by jaggs on

Late to the party here, but didn't see it come up in the open thread.

With OSU jumping TCU and also staving off Baylor, does this show Patterson (and Briles I guess) that having 1 loss at a blue blood school will always trump their current schools and hamper their bids at getting to the NCG?? Could they see Michigan as an easier route to a title by being in a shittier conference and getting more credit for ending up at the top of that conference?

Could this help Patterson see the benefits of making a move to Michigan? Hopefully this is all moot once JH accepts the position, though Patterson could be the 2nd best option out there.

EDIT: Granted this is not enough to move the needle for Patterson to jump ship, however it does demonstrate the value of the big name programs right?

Yes?

I expect Patterson and Briles both just got a rude awakening: namebrand is a tie-breaker. Patterson just completed the very impressive feat of taking TCU from being mid-major power to Big 5 Power. Briles also has taken a worthless Baylor program and made them awesome, and they both got shafted anyway for a team with a better namebrand that is probably less deserving than either Big 12 team. Surely it's crossed their minds that they are permanently handicapped to some degree at their respective Universities (a handicap Michigan will never have might I add)

Someone help me. Can Harbaugh sign a contract with us whenever he wants to? Or does he have to wait until a certain point in the season in order to be eligible to talk to anyone else?

He can go to CFB whenever he wants at zero penalty. However, aside from that being a bit of a clue to his future (having not done it yet) I wouldn't put too much into it. Why? No coach wants to be a "quitter". No real coach with morals, competitiveness & a playoff chance anyway. I still won't believe we can get him until he's signed and at a UM press conference. Yet, I don't think you can look at the fact that he hasn't just left SF in a playoff hunt as too big a sign.

returns almost everyone on their 2 deep, especially offense. They are very young and I don't see either leaving. I think Patterson (both really) are all Texas and I think Patterson sees TCU as a likely playoff team next year (should be this year, IMO).

Agree.  If commissioner had declared a champion I think one of them would of gone. Should have gone.  Anyone think back to the year Buckeyes got choosen over UM to go to Rose Bowl and MSU's AD pickied Osu because our quarterback got hurt?  I thought this was going to be karma kicking them in the butt.  Oh well.

It seems that he's been offered every big "blue blood" job out there but he's never left TCU. With no Michigan connections I think the effect is minimal. He seems like a TCU lifer to me.

Nitpicky and annoying, I know, but seeding is a tactic used by the NCAA, who actually uses a real tournament.

The highest division of college football uses an idiotic ranking system where a team that won 55-3 can drop 3 spots the next day because logic.

Anyways, I doubt it.

You might not be wrong that TCU should be in the playoff, but your reasoning for why is wrong.  All rankings before the final projection really shouldn't matter. Before Saturday, the selection board was missing 8% of the data they needed to make the final decision.   Up until that point, it's really just an approximation.  Yes TCU blew out a team 55-3, but the team they blew out wasn't an impressive team compared to the 13th game that the conference champs had to beat.

If you want to argue that althoughFSU is undefeated, other one loss teams have looked better over the course of the season, that is a reasonable argument.  One that the committee must have made.  Arguing that a team that was ahead didn't lose, and thus, can't drop, is a poor way of looking at the entire season and refuses to rectify any mistakes in previous assumptions.

Thread Starter asked:

"Could they see Michigan as an easier route to a title by being in a shittier conference and getting more credit for ending up at the top of that conference?"

And you would want the kind of coach that thinks like this?

are my thoughts. Another way to view it would be Patterson sees a cap at TCU, he would need to go undefeated to win a championship, whereas at Michigan he may be able to lose a game and still get there.

I think Harbaugh wants the job but doesn't want to leave the NFL. I have a bad feeling  that the longer this goes on, the more likelihodd its going to be a third or fouth choice. Probably are worst fears are realized and Greg Schiano gets named.

Agreed. It's important for Michigan for OSU, and thus the B1G, to make a good impression.

Of course, it helps the conference in terms of money, which as I understand it is shared among all the teams.

And if OSU does well against Bama by being competitive win or lose, it's more likely that the next B1G winners get a seat at the big boy table. We all hope that Michigan will be that B1G winner soon.

Whether we root for or against OSU won't affect the outcome, but I think it's important for the conference if OSU looks good.

No. Recruiting against them is more important and if they beat Bama the national analysts would just be talking about how good Ohio is and not the big ten as the Illinois and Marylands of the world lose their bowl games.

can beat the 2nd place BIG team by 50 plus points...and the fact that Michigan was not even one of the top 10 BIG teams to get a bowl invite means that Michigan and Ohio are miles apart and that unless your name is Jim Harbaugh...the Michigan job might not be a quick fix.

Patterson as next HC if it's not Jim Harbaugh, but realistically think there is practically no chance he's going to be anywhere other than again on the TCU sidelines next season.

IMO, probably one of the least likely of any of the big names being mentioned or wished for.  Only the coach who rhymes with Phil Zellicheck is less likely.

Only we can restore our reputation by playing and beating tough non-conference opponents and winning the conference itself. But an Ohio State victory over Alabama (hopefully followed by a decent showing in losing to Oregon) would have a huge impact on the wider perception of the Big Ten. How much that helps us is difficult to judge, but I am sure there are no upsides for us in the Big Ten being perceived as a weak conference.
